Sometimes folk are negative to either stand out from the crowd or to join it.
Sometimes folk are negative because the game industry or big business in general at its core is negative.
The big suits want money so they make plans to screw the consumers and the developers to save or make money.
A portion of potential consumers have no qualms about screwing developers in terms of buying the product below fair market value or straight up stealing it.
Developers will screw the consumer and big suits by not delivering the product they were supposed to. Whether through their own inability or half ass work while their real focus is on another project.
Plenty of reasons for negativity. Also #TheInternet.
@Vestax if you mean relative to other fanbases, like say of movies, then I think the answer is the fact that gamers invest far more time and thought towards games, since they cannot just be watched and by definition require participation. That automatically involves people’s emotions in it more. Really, it’s just a sign of how dedicated the fanbase is, even if some vocal people take it to unreasonable extremes
Is not “gamers” is just the current culture. Back in the day you’d study harder if you got a C- in school. Now you just bitch at the teacher for making a hard exam and demand for make up exams and shit like that.
Videogames are just a reflection of what people want nowadays. Most of the time you get repetitive gameplay with eye candy graphics. Add in DLC and a sequel every year and that’s 85% of the games released
People falling for clickbait. Every website or youtube channel that doesn’t want to come off as a corporate shill has to pretend to be outraged by every business practice even if it’s fair. When you have people that are too stupid to realize that reaction channels are fake, having Alpha Omega Sin/Angry Joe/YongYea telling them they should be mad at something, most don’t take to the time to actually think for themselves. Personally when a game is a unfinished mess like Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite and a company is charging for it people have a right to be upset. But when you have stupid shit like Activision allowing you buy colors for your gear with real money when you can still unlock the colors for free you’re just whining.
Full of negativity? Mmmmmmmmmmm…potentially. I think it boils down to nostalgia, entitlement and just overall greediness. Then factor in some companies being worse then others. I feel it’s the opposite these days. Bad games (whether deemd by the playerbase or otherwise) are a dime a dozen whereas good games are hard to come by…depending on player of course. Unless it’s cod…then it’s just bad everytime all the time.
i dont think it has much to do with companies releasing subpar games or price gouging with dlc. i mean thats shitty too but i wouldnt call it a primary factor.
imo its because of the proliferation of internet hobby culture. people invest so much time, money, and effort into their hobbies by constantly researching, posting on message boards, dick measuring, shopping around, and interacting with experts with the hope of becoming experts themselves at their chosen craft. after you invest that much into anything, its easy to become bitter and defensive when rationalizing the extent of the investment that has been made. pretending to be an expert just because the internet gave you a voice is so trendy right now that it has essentially become its own hobby. some hobbies are worse than others, but video gamers are right at the bottom due to the personality traits they tend to have and the time consuming nature of the activity itself.
oh yeah and other internet shit like anonymity and whatnot
It’s not a “gamer” thing, people are just more able to voice their opinions and preferences nowadays, and once you find a group of like-minded people your opinions on anything will move towards the extreme of that thing, even if you started out really tame.
That’s it. That’s the secret. People are wired to form groups, and groups are wired to remove dissent. With those two factors at play, groups will move to the extremes by themselves. Soon, “this game is good but i liked the previous game better” becomes “this game sucks balls, this company has gone to shit”, and there you have your complaints.
… bro videogames have only been around for like 30 years. If you count where home videogaming started then you can’t really speak about “any generation” but perhaps a handful of them.
Uh, as I said, with different nouns. Even if you aren’t talking about video games but music or whatever else. There is no back in the day. Back in the day older people complained about younger generations and things getting easier or whatever else too. That has been around for ages now.
