VERY different to: “its designed to make a comeback/leveling playfield/etc”
You can opt for NOT using it. Or does ST gief gains a big comeback ability when he has meter? Blanka?

if it makes the game more exciting than im all for it
It’s fake excitement though if the game does the hard work for you.
Who cares? You don’t get it for losing, you get it from being active.
i rather have whiff normals building meter than having some stupid come back mechanic.
I thought about writing a long post about the differences between good and bad comeback mechanics, but no one’s going to give a shit anyways.
Nothing’s necessary in anything.
Yeah I really dont understand why 3s got so much hate for having this mechanic. Its really not a game breaker in 3s.If people are building meter full screen, dash in there and smack em in the face.
Whiffing normals is much safer than whiffing specials.
Some ultras in SSF4 take away options from your opponent. That’s right, you lose options to go about winning the match… by winning the match.
Rage in T6 is just a damage boost. Yeah, it sucks, but all forced comeback mechanics do, at least it’s A) avoidable and B) keeps the characters and the rules of the game.
Ultra and X-Factor… eh.
Depends on the comeback mechanic, but the one I really am against is, I kick your ass, beat you down to a pulp, fill your ultra guage for you, build you meter to cancel, then you can just ANY SPECIAL INVINCIBLE MOOOOVE>FADC>ULTRA SO PRO. Or if it’s a good ultra just mash the ultra instead of special move.
ST had special bar, but you need to work your ass off to fill it up, it doesn’t come for free. XFC I guess I’m kinda ok with since you BOTH have it. Rage in Tekken can go to hell, it falls under ‘get ass kicked here’s free shit’.
It also takes away from real comebacks, like ones done in ST (Daigo)/3S (Daigooo again)/GG. It also takes away from real rushdown/beasting, since you play safer since ‘omg i gave him ultra to mash, shit!’. Instead of just going after and after like a beast.
same
I actually think that’s better to an extent. Now I wish ultras did generally less damage and they synergized better with skill based systems… ( i.e. make focusing attacks and regenning the health give more meter than just getting punched, or something )… but I’d actually say that comeback mechanics that do nothing other than buff the loser’s damage are the bad ones, because they’re so one dimensional.
I don’t really think that’s something you’d trade for like that
Seeing as I was playing Samurai Shodown 2 religiously when I was a youngun - yeah, comeback mechanics are nothing new and are actually pretty interesting when done right.
The only real problem I have with MvC3 is that there is still no “Burst/Mega Crash” deal in play (which seems damn near necessary considering most the cast can do 100% combos, and would be a far better comeback mechanic) and that X-Factor Level is based not on how much total health you have but how many characters you have - essentially rewarding people for sacrificing characters instead of keeping a stable team.
X Factor is definitely not the right way to do it, but I’m not against come back mechanics.
I think it’s okay conceptually, just taken too far to the extreme.
Fixed it for you.
If we just had a universal Level 1 X-Factor, there’d be no complaints. While I don’t necessarily care too much about how it is now, i think people would’ve been a lot happier, and the game is ridiculous enough as it is. If anything, Level 3 X-Factor TAMES the game, and that’s not what you want.
This is my problem with Ultras and the like. I own a match, but now you have an Ultra that takes away my options. You have this power for free, for losing. LAME.
My problem with X-Factor is that I don’t like to beat someone down and then have to run away when they activate because one BNB is enough to really change things. Again, for losing, you get a very powerful state. I just don’t like it.
X-Factor should be the same no matter how many characters you have.
I still think the best comeback mechanic is the same one every game can have: a skilled player with cool nerves.
Well if it was universal that’d be beyond the purview of this thread to begin with. Though I actually played an earlier build with a universal level 1 X-factor and it wasn’t that much better. It just turned x-factor into a “guarantee a kill off of your opening combo” button, rather than anything with depth. That and looking at the current lame, level 1 XF is too boring and limited. Universal level 3 Xfactor imo
Universal Level 3 XFactor would be moronic. People were using the Universal Level 1 X-Factor as a Guarantee Kill off the Point Character, because it was a fight club. If it’s boring, whatever, it’s either that, get rid of the damage boost and keep the levels (my preference), or just get rid of it entirely.
Universal Level 3 X-Factor means if you even look at someone wrong, they can guard cancel and kill you.
