Are colors too much of a grind fest?

Whenever you post, I have to wonder when exactly you started gaming. Alternate colors are now considered “content”. Next you’re going to be suggesting that it would be okay to have to beat Hell Survival with every character just to unlock another set of menial tasks for one character needed to just to get an alternate win quote. And for each character you want a quote for, you have to beat Hell with every character again.

Don’t kid yourself. This is the free to play system in action. Capcom will eventually allow you to buy each alternate color once you get sick of the grinding. This is also their excuse for not having an arcade mode.

And why exactly do you want all colours for all characters? I personally use only different colours on my main. I do t care for lauras or mika colour 8 or whatever.

If it’s your urge for completion then grind it out and feel the satisfaction once you get it, but dont complain. It’s hard to achieve by choice. If it’s “just because” you can just as well not care at all and carry on. I probably never play rashid, why do I need all colours. Whether I got them or not is irrelevant for my gaming experience.

same question to you, why do you even “want” all colours?
And yes, since colours are this time locked behind a task, it’s content. Unlockable content.

If you want a certain colour for your main, I dont see why winning macimum 50 battles is too much of a task to accomplish.

And again, if you want anything for the sake of completion you’re basically admitting it’s content…

I dont see people complaining that they had to complete trial mode to get a title for their character even when it’s just aesthetics too.

Well, trial mode was a fun and legitimate challenge. Survival on the other hand is just an obnoxious and time-consuming test of patience against retarded input-reading AI that somehow makes you worse at the game.

@gigglz

I know where you’re coming from, but I still have problems with it. Those simply being:

A ) Beating Survival doesn’t mean you’re good. It just means you can bullshit the CPU long enough to beat all the rounds. I would be fine with your points if Survival wasn’t filled with a bunch of BS and RNG. Nothing from this mode will help you get better as a player.

B ) Spending a half hour/45m going through survival and losing near the end due to bad luck with HP/DEF ups is not fun and you get nothing but an option to restart if this happens. Like it was said before in the thread: this being a feeling that a large majority has is not a good sign.

C ) I don’t want to see the same, very limited, set of colors available to use at tournaments. Like you said, people won’t unlock all of them. Plain and simple.

The color grind is poorly done because color choice has always been a standard for most SF games. Now they have taken default content and hide it behind a mindless grind against the CPU. IV did a great job by unlocking colors as you play matches. Its intuitive. Playing against a cpu in survival mode to unlock colors is counter intuitive.

It would make more sense if unlocking colors was done just as it was in IV or that doing the trials/challenges for your character unlocked their colors.

Ok, based on your points I should probably clarify something:

Im defending the fact that colours are locked content.

You’re absolutely right (with A and B) that the implementation of how to unlock it is lackluster. But NOT because it’s a lot of fights. It’s lackluster because the AI doesnt “level up” accordingly to the stage level of survival. One opponent almost crushes you while the next one can be lamed out with sweeps all day. The power ups being rng doesnt help either

But even then people would complain…

In this thread people are complaining about the colours being too much of a grind fest, not that survival mode is shitty designed and flawed.

tl;dr version

yes, survival mode as it is now SUCKS

no, colours being locked is not a bad thing

And that’s hoping you do it on the first try lol god knows the amount of rounds it will actually take the average player

Lol if you consider this garbage “playing for it” I don’t know what to tell you. Playing for it is what ssf4 did

Every time I see someone defend this mode, I come closer and closer to wanting to strangle someone.

Capcom employees trying to diffuse the situation trololololol

defending colours being an unlock in general. It should be unlocked - immediately. Even SFIV had it wrong although the unlock system was MUCH better for the player. This shit doesn’t even count as legitimate game content to lock behind game modes, it’s a fucking aesthetic change for your character that isn’t even bringing in new textures or meshes. It’s laughable.

Why not lock new costumes behind survival? Something worthwhile? Why make us pay FM for the costumes after beating story mode and instead make them an unlock via hard mode? That makes completing hard mode worth the effort, an entirely new alternate skin for your character. Instead let’s make the survival modes unlock colour palettes, a game feature that was as simple as a different button press some games ago, and as simple as PLAYING. THE. GAME. in SFIV; the audience will love that! Xrd has them immediately, MKX although it lacked colour options had the alternate versions unlocked immediately - y’know why? Because their game modes weren’t utter shit, they didn’t have to lock content behind them to make you play them. Obvious move to stretch the games lifespan while they patch together the updates and it’s been poorly received, all flak going to them is earned entirely.

Hard mode survival is essentially you working for 12 hours a day to get paid £5/$5. The effort required is NOT worth the payout, colours are not a “sign of skill/commitment” or trophy to show off online, it’s a fucking colour. You want a trophy to show off? Go earn a title, go earn a hard achievement, go earn a special colour that isn’t part of the default options, go earn an alternate costume. Anything that isn’t as simple as a fucking character colour

I’ve used a trainer for characters that aren’t Ken and completed their easy/normal/hard difficulties respectively, do you know how long it took me? One hitting the opposing character, with infinite health? 4 hours.

4 hours, for 5 characters.

4 hours.

  1. Fucking. Hours.

It took me four hours to unlock the colours I wanted, with fights lasting below 3 seconds every time. The main bulk of my time was spent staring at loading screens and spamming continue. Try doing it legitimately, you’re looking at 6/7 hours. An entire day.

This is not acceptable. This time investment for something so minor is beyond my comprehension of stupidity, Capcom is one of the biggest names in gaming and I’m astounded they’re this out of touch. Nobody said a word about this during QA? Not a single developer stood up and said “This is a horrible idea, it takes too long.”

Fuck anyone who defends this mode, fuck anyone who defends locked colours. I want to see colours on display in tournaments, I want to fight different colours online, I want variety in the colours I’m seeing to add diversity and identity to the people I play against.

As barebones as SFV actually is, I would give the game a better rating if it didn’t include this mode. This is literal cancer.

They better offer these and a lot more colors as FM as sad as that sounds. Colors shouldn’t be a thing you have to grind out on a pointless game mode that teaches you nothing about how to play the game just how to beat horrible AI.

I don’t mind the colors being locked behind some achievements or defeating a boss or something. But spending my evenings pummeling some braindead CPU for 30 rounds just to get to the one or two fights that actually matter is annoying. (Doubly so when you lose for any number of reasons)

Make survival shorter, but ramp the difficulty up faster (and at a smoother rate) and I might actually not mind it as much.

Remember when you unlocked colors by simply pressing a punch or kick button at the character select?

Does anyone have a legitimate reason why colours shouldnt be locked content?

And “because it has always been like that” isnt a good reason… in SF4 they were locked too.

No one’s saying they can’t be locked. They just shouldn’t be locked behind stupid shit.

Really puts things in perspective. The payoff is just not worth it at all.

Well some people in this thread do say that colours shouldnt be locked… ever.

I dont really get the trouble with that. I’ve never seen a player that actually made use of having “all colours” unlocked in SF4.
I played SF4 for it’s entire duration and I’ve probably never picked 80-90% of colours available at all.

Having all colours with Gen for example did absolutely nothing for me at all.

So I personally dont care if I dont have all of Lauras colours, because I dont play her.
And when I meet someone that plays her, that guy PROBABLY has all her colours… So where exactly does the problem come up?

Is it really just “I want all colours just because, so give them to me” ?

Colors were never locked in the old games. This is something that SFIV started, and even in that game unlocking them all was shit-brain easy. All you had to do was play the game in any shape or form. Makes perfect sense why people are so upset about how they’re acquired in this game when you look at how it’s been handled in previous titles.

Even with this in mind, what point is there in defending it? People don’t feel like they should have to work this much for something as simple as a character color, and I agree. If you don’t agree, then go ahead and spend all that time in Survival mode enjoying yourself, instead of sitting here telling me I’m wrong for refusing to grind out a bunch of meaningless fights just to give my character a basic amount of customization. This is a level of customization, mind you, that came with games FROM THE START back before SFIV came out for YEARS.

It’s a waste of time, and if I had to bet money on it, I’d be willing to say it was an intentional design choice to force you into spending either Fight Money and/or real money on the colors you want once the March update rolls out. Bet on it.

I bet if stages were locked behind a pointless time wasting mode that has no benefits to the player other than using gimmicks against broken AI and gigglz only played one stage he would defend it too.
