Arcade Sticks = Advantage?

There’s honestly no big difference. I only pointed it out because you said you can press buttons faster on a stick rather than pad which really is bullshit. I was picking at what you were picking at. But seriously, grab a stick, do a hadoken. I guarantee that your finger(s) will be at least half an inch above the punch button (maybe even more so if you’re the type that likes to double tap). Where as with a pad your fingers would already be resting on the button. Again, I’m only nitpicking at what you’re nitpicking at.

Also, the L triggers are mapped for ppp or kkk, which would mean pad players are at an advantage

“as far as my experience goes” strengthens the argument that it’s NOT an advantage but preference

Then it’s totally unrealistic for anyone to say that using a stick is an advantage.

EXACTLY MY POINT!!!

PREFERENCE

shrug preference

Funniest thing is arcade players saying pad players have an advantage cuz you can’t hear when they’re hitting the buttons/moving the pad.

pad and arcade stick both have their advantages and disadvantages in the latest SF games.

I hope Evo this year makes everyone wear ear plugs and horse blinders!

Also American arcades should put spikes around all of their control panels so that cabinet feelers get fucking stabbed in their thighs!!!

SBO has always used head-to-head cabinets… maybe they can start having the two cabs in separate buildings from each other!! Seclusion and loneliness would just be a part of the mindgames! It will feel like you’re at home by yourself playing onliiiine awawaawa!!!

it kinda matters what game i think too…with SF4 its not that big of an advantage, but like on Marvel, its easier to scratch out of things on stick imo…Ive played pad before and i could scratch out of hypergrab xx tempest, but i feel its a lot easier on stick…Also on HDR, if ur trying to scratch out of like boxer’s headbutt throw, its best to hit like u/f, d/b really fast, which i think on stick is faster and easier…basically anything that requires multiple presses i think are easier…of course its preference so this thread is kinda one way or another…ive had friends argue to me that playing a FPS on pad is better than mouse and keyboard, but i think everyone can agree that mouse and keyboard is more accurate and faster :expressionless:

EDIT: ^ actually seeing an opponent freak out in the corner of my eye kinda hints me that they could be rushed down more :stuck_out_tongue:

If you grew up playing SF in the arcades, a joystick definitely has an advantage over a control pad. I don’t play SF4, but currently play HD Remix on the stock PS3 control pad. This isn’t by choice btw as I’m just waiting for a custom joystick to be made for me.

My problems with a pad are:

  1. D pad is not as consistent as a stick when doing uppercuts and supers. I really have a hard time doing supers with the motion…charge back, forward, back, forward (Dee Jay and Bison)

  2. Only four buttons on the face of the control pad, and the two buttons on top have to be used with your index finger. I map my strong and forward on top because those two buttons are probably the least I will used. You’re telling me thats not a disadvantage over a stick with a 6 button layout? LOL I’m surprised I can do Dee Jay’s crossover combos over 50% of the time with that layout…

  3. Thumb will get tired eventually with charge characters in long battles. Sometimes over a long period of time when playing with Guile, my thumb will actually become numb.

You can throw sonic booms quicker on a pad because of the d pads shorter distance, but again, the motion won’t be as accurate as on a stick. I have my other PS3 controller in pieces from slamming it against the floor after losing multiple matches because of it…:annoy: So ya, I have issues playing SF with control pads…

Our wrists have much more stamina and experience with streneous activities. :wonder:

Being real good on a pad can and has been done.

Go play the DGV bros. if you don’t believe me.

I love pad and I’m now trying to play on stick…why? because really and truly it seems to me that most fighting games were made with an arcade stick in mind.

Guile’s Super (db [charge],df,db,uf+K), Yoriko’s Talisman Power up (u,db,uf,ub,df,u + A / B / C )…these can be done on pad but I think they were design for stick.

So although moves can be done on pad, I think they were made for stick.

i dont think so that a stick is that much of an advantage…

i ve seen guys playing with pads and doing all the tough tricks others say are easier to pull of with a stick…

imo its all about preference

Bam. Right there. The only advantage to a stick is when you want to play on a arcade machine. Everyone has their preferences, and you can do whatever you desire with either medium.

There is an advantage to sticks in the button setup. Anybody who knows how to touch type can vouch for the fact that having your hand floating over a bunch of button makes you smack that fast and furious. The layout on a stick compared to the standard pads (ps3, 360 and wiimote) gives you access to all the buttons on an easier interface. If the controller was easier for rapid inputs, somebody would come up with some kinda fucked up keyboard that types like a giant pad. But fuck it, so far nobody has come with that retarded idea.

As for the move input, it gets tricky. This is going to depend on the pad and the game. Soul Cal, Tekken, and VF moves don’t require the stick to go all over the place (some of the combos do, but for the most the moves consist of press forward twice, hold angle and/or multiple button presses). In this case the accuracy of the pads input for movement would have to be examined. Stick vs 360 pad vs PS3 pad vs Fight pad vs etc.

Although fuck the 360 pad to hell. You can pretty much teach yourself how to do whatever in whichever way; doesn’t mean it is easier than other methods, just means that you learned to do it that way.

well if sticks are a advantage or not is pretty debatable. But IMO there is totally no legitimacy to the complaint if sticks were a advantage anyway. As sticks are the default controller for most arcade games they are the constant… Just because every console does not come with a arcade stick does not mean pads are the default controller.

tennis is played with a racket, baseball is played with a bat and street fighter is played with a arcade stick

I’m sure if it was okay in the rules you could get good at tennis with a bat… but you can’t hate on tennis players for using a racket.

Dumming is so much easier on a stick.

Let’em play with this.

I switched to arcade since all arcades have only arcade sticks…and there are no execution issues neither getting blisters on thumb from just using d-pad. Tiger knees are infinitely easier, and please try to do high-level Eddie combos on a pad, I’ll give you anything.

These scrubs seem to forget these games were designed for arcade cabinets, and thus were designed for sticks. It is not that stick users are at an advantage, it is that the pad users are at a disadvantage. One that can be fixed by spending a few dollars…but one cry of the scrub is that they somehow should not have to spend extra money for their hobbies. Makes no sense at all.

If you really love fighting games (or any past time) you would want to get the most you can from it.

To me one advantage would be not dominating your fingers lol.
Also if you want to play on arcade you should just play stick at home so you don’t have to adapt to either. Also stick will give you a more authentic experience cause it emulates being at an arcade. Also if you have a nice stick you can show it off to your friends haha. Not like anyone will care about your sweet dual shock controller.

Eh, I guess you COULD say that the NES Advantage is an arcade stick in the sense that it has a joystick instead of a D-Pad.

IMO, the only advantage that stick players have over pad players is the fact that 75% of stick players were around when arcades were alive.
