i need help choosing a good arcade stick for ps2. What do the big boys use while
playing mvc2. I really prefer an american style one because it’s similar to the arcade version. i can spend like $50 - probably $80ish. Do they use controllers at ps2 tournaments? Thanks in advance

Donut223 is right, but to be more specific:
There are three main Arcade stick brands: Happ(American), and Sanwa & Seimitsu(Japanese). Either one will do fine, but in my opinion you can’t go wrong with a Happ competition stick and many MVC2 players just happen to use them too.
The MAS stick is your best bet on something pre-built with real arcade parts, and it has a Happ competition stick in it. It may be pricey but its a worthy LONG term investment that’ll probably last a lifetime. Usually costs about $80-$100, again its WORTH the cost for the reliability.
Edit: If you buy one its also recommended to have it built with Competition(Convex) buttons too.
Are games easier with arcade pads?
2d fighters, yes. 3d fighters, could go either way.
3D fighters? I’d say yes. Especially in games like Soul Calibur where you have to push a button just to block, and two buttons to throw.
Its much easier keeping up on block button usage, in addition to attacking than with a pad. Thats part of the beauty of a stick- you can press multiple buttons at once quickly and comfortably. One can do this with a pad but it just does not feel “right” and is an annoyance.
Combos too. In MVC2 doing magic series on stick is a breeze, on a pad its like my thumb is being raped or something. Finger tips also don’t feel anywhere as sore when playing for hours on a stick Vs playing hours on a pad.
hmmm thanks guys. Just something I’ve always wondered. I always felt for me it would be a hard adjustment. I’ll wait till I’am half way decent before I get one though.
can the mas stick take a beating? where in queens can i get it.walmart, radioshack bestbuy dosent have it.
You should take care of your stick and not beat it up. As for just gameplay, yeah the happ controls can withstand quite a bit.
The MAS is not something you’d find in a normal store, online only.
I use the DC stick.
I prefer that the curved japanese style.
switch activated joystick inputs are crap for marvel. The game takes such a beating on the joystick it self that they’ll go bad quick if you know how to play. Shit like this can cost you in tourney play unless you change your joystick switches out before every tourney and thats a pain in the ass.
The thing about switch activated sticks is that its impossible to really know when they go bad because they don’t just break. They slowly crap out on you over time. So this means 1 to a few randomly skipped inputs @ first and you have to question your input. Then after a week of this happening, the actual switch goes bad on you. The last thing you want during a tourney is questioning your stick because its been acting up. That shit needs to be on point 24\7.
digital 360 is better, yes. in alot of games, I’ve trained myself to listen for the click on the switch inputs, but marvel isn’t one of those games now that I think about it.
if you ever want to test your stick for defects, marvel is the game to do it. lol
blocking, rushing down, doing magneto resets on 360’s literally broke my wrist…not a bone (i think…i hope) but I can’t play on them anymore without pain. though maybe there are some loose spring ones??? this one was STIFF as hell.
Yeah, I never had that problem. stiff sticks are gay.
when I first got my p360, I wanted to change the spring out because it was just wayyyy too stiff. I know exactly what you mean but I kinda like it now. My old happs comp stick was very light and if your hand slid off the stick, it was random inputs galore. Shit would ping pong all over the place like no tomorrow. Thats one + I like over p360’s vs happs comp sticks. The spring is so stiff that if you accidently slip, it will have very minimal recoil inputs compared to a happs comp.
not to mention that when switches go bad, they start giving you double inputs. One for press and release… I just hate that shit because mid game, its hard as fuck to realize whats going on…
If i had it my way, I would get a sanwa stick that was a p360 and ironically they do make them but not anymore iirc. They’re optical. Mixup has one stashed away some where and its pretty fucking cool. Its just a round hole and when its plugged up, you can stick your finger in the hole and move it around w\o touching the edges and you can get inputs!
what we really need are optical switches instead of mechanical ones. thats the next step.
I enjoy the looseness of comp’s. as long as they’re good/precise/in good condition.
maybe just because I’ve only played on stiff p360’s, but it’s harder to block, fly, dash for followups, etc. etc. and again, it fucking broke my wrist…
The thing I dont like about P360 is they seem to be either to loose, or to tight…I know the switches go bad, but its a pretty noticeable adjustment changin from a comp or pro joystick.
i hate getting nj’s instead of sj’s on p360’s…don’t even get on my about not getting diagnols (yeah, I really want my trijump to be a square jump…)
