Arcade ST vs. Remix

Yes, because Hawk’s corner infinite was extremely broken and inescapable for the entire cast, not to mention it was incredibly easy execution-wise so it was a free win for anyone who picked Hawk and got someone in the corner.

ToDs FTW ALL DAY BAY-BAY!!!

I’m sorry…but, as many of you would’ve predicted, I’m all for ToDs in their current state. Dizziness punishes poor defense. It serves as a motivator to get your head in the game or else. I love it.

It wasn’t inescapable. If you were truly negative edging it (only three possible button presses) you could stand a good chance of getting thrown.

I think you’re assuming that the combos would stay intact, but that they would not dizzy.

I’m not sure what options they have to play with dizzy properties of individual attack strenghts for a specific character.

They could:

  1. reduce damage on moves in combo. (allow dizzy, but won’t deliver damage for TOD)
  2. adjust delay/startup on moves in combo so that the existing TOD combos don’t connect.
  3. remove dizzies from the game.

Great point!

When I play vs. a Ken player who can execute the 2xshort>Super/Special I DEFINITELY play in a state of MUCH higher care and anxiety.

Playing without fear of mistakes being punished materially changes up the risks you take.

obviously.

It must be a PS3 version issue because I’ve never seen it with the 360.

Getting in wasnt free though.
People forget that.
Considering how hard it is to get in, maybe it SHOULD be a free win once he gets in.

His relative difficulty for getting in doesn’t justify a 100% damage combo; I think Sirlin was well-justified for trying to find a way to remove it. Would have preferred more bounceback instead of a whiff, but hey. (Hell, that might have been enough to leave in the amazing safe knockdown dive too, but we may never know.) Just seems funny that a less practical guarantee on a bottom character got axed, but a better overall character kept his easier one.

I find myself playing T.Hawk more now than in ST, but I don’t know if it’s because he’s better or if I’m just playing more overall. Either way, it’s awfully fun, and HD Remix has enough good tweaks and a good online experience to make it my favorite.

Is there really any chance we’ll get another patch to at least fix the controller issues and other such minor things on PS3? Would be nice.

I prefer HDR over vanilla ST because

There is no bs in HDR.

Its more balanced than old ST

Guile is actually playable in HDR.

Okay i’ll take the troll bait.

How is guile not playable in ST ?

He is a very solid mid tier character.

Just repeating what brian had said earlier about Guile is actually playable in HDR And I agree with him.

Imo Guile has many problems against a lot the cast in old ST in other words its an uphill battle for Guile, and Sirlin did fixed those match up problems in HDR that Guile had, plus the new overhead and the roundhouse flash kick improve him quite a bit. Not to sound selfish or anything, but those improvements will better my chances of winning to a larger degree.

I’m not sure I would call it troll bait for wait I said, I’m just stating my opinion like everyone else Shari.

I think HDR is more balanced than old ST thanks to the changes Sirlin had made and not just guile but the entire cast.

Wow I got neg repped for saying I like fake fireball. O.o’

You should play T.hawk before you make a statement like that.

Bison can keep his incredibly ambiguous crossup that goes into either A. a ToD combo that is retardedly easy or B. completely safe block string that goes into mixup for a tick throw. Hawk though, one of the worst in VST cant keep the only thing that was making him playable. Oh.

This is a good point. Even though I feel that Remix is inferior overall, it may actually be a better tournament candidate, simply because it’s on a next-gen system, and because there are a lot of new people playing it.

There would be a lot of grumpy old men, but as I’ve said before, I’d rather play Remix as opposed to nothing at all.

After this evo, I have come to share this POV, exactly.

Thank you for saying this.

I main both Hawk and Bison. I don’t see this issue with his ToD’s. Cammy one, Sagat has one, Honda sorta has one, Ken has one, and Hawk has one. Bison’s may be more practical, regarding how laughably poor his defense is, I find it acceptable. The only person I’ve ever seen get the throw loop down constitently is Toutanki. I could only do it half of the time.

And while Hawk can’t mix-up like Gief can, he still has that ability. Look at what Lieut Dan did to Jodim, or the other night when me and RagingStorm were doing mirrors, I caught him almost everytime.

I win the exact same amount of fights with Hawk as I do with Bison. I must be doing something wrong with him then.

Remember that there is a classic mode. This mode has yet to be tested and I’ll again plug my own thread:

Yes, the discussion should forget the particulars of the character changes and should instead ask the question “Which game is the most satisfying to play competitively?”. I think this is the single most important question and should make the decision.

Note that my question does not address anything about balance or popularity. Balance is good, but fun is more important. I would rather play a game that is intricate and fun but has overpowered characters than a game that is balanced but the gameplay is dull.

Popularity is another concern I see brought up all the time. I do appreciate the number of people that have come into the scene in the last year, but I do not put their importance over the competitive aspect of the game. The game was plenty competitive before, though more of a niche aspect of fighting games than the second biggest game at Evolution. I suspect that even if HDR were to be taken as the standard from now on there would still be obscure tournaments for the old game. There are a number of diehards who will never ever let the game go.

So even if more people want to play HDR cause it is new that doesn’t matter to me cause I know in 2 or 3 years time the number of people playing will probably drop back to old ST levels. Do we want to keep HDR then? Is it good enough to last 15 years like ST did? Wait, I don’t even wanna think about the idea of playing SF2 in 2024.:looney: Maybe we stick with HDR for a few years til we burn out on it then switch back to ST for another “remix”.

Personally, I’m torn. I like many of the changes of HDR, but in many ways I feel the game is too simple now. There are many “get out of jail” cards that I feel were unnecessary and make the game slightly less competitive. It feels like there is less to learn.

Additonally, and I might be talking out of my ass here but whatever, there are 32 characters in ST. Probably 20 or so of them are tournament viable. There are 16 characters in HDR, and 13 or 14 are tournament viable. That’s a pretty big difference for the amount of complexity involved in playing the game. That’s a lot more match-ups to know, and a lot more variety per play session. I would like to hear some more opinions about this.

O. sagat and vega played like Tokido 2007 ruin ST. Without them, I like arcade ST. With them, console HDR.

I don’t think O Sagat and Hyou-Bal ruin ST, but man, I sure do prefer being able to play without them.
