Anyone know anything about wireless?

So I’m totally new to wireless internet (yeah, I’m behind). Every single time I turn my computer on, I have to open my belkin wireless networking utility program, disconnect, reconnect, and put in my password aka my like 64 fucking character hexadecimal code. It’s getting old and I don’t want to do it anymore. Maybe it’s because Avast opens on startup and blocks it? It has a little diagram with signal strength - computer - router- internet, where each link turns green or red. It’s green to the computer part, then the rest is red.

I’ll try having avast not turn on when I start up but is there some simple solution to this?

by the way if this is really too inconvienent to post here (I know there’s a tech talk board but… I’ll forget it’s there) it can be moved, but I was just wondering if it’s just me being dumb and if there’s a simple fix.

I’ve got a belkin usb wireless… interceptor? I don’t know what you call it. And a wireless g linksys (can go get more details on it if it’s necessary, it’s in the other room) router. I know the password stuff and can access it via the 192.xxx. etc. if there’s a setting to like… I don’t know what I’m trying to do I just want to stop having to reconnect/retype my password every time I shut my computer off.

So the steps you take are:
Turn on PC
Your PC connects to the router, but no internet connection.

or is it

Turn on PC
PC cannot connect to router, but yes to internet from modem to router.

If you can elaborate on exactly what you do from Turning on your PC to where the problem occurs, I can help ya get to the bottom of this.

It doesn’t get the connection to the router. Modem-router is fine, because my roommate has no issues, computer on already or just turning it on or whatever. Internet itself is up, my computer just doesn’t auto-connect until I put in the password after disconnecting and reconnecting. I’m not sure that’s the only way to get it but it’s what I’ve been doing.

On your Belkin utility, is there a checkbox that you can tick so it will remember your connection to that router?

Also, maybe you have to set up Avast to allow traffic to the Belkin utility?

I get this screen when I first have turned my computer on

if I go to the settings for it, I have the check box checked for “auto-connect to this network” and I go to edit information and my 26 digit passcode thing is already saved in there

yet for some reason it can’t ever auto-connect? it never works until I disconnect, then click connect again, which requires me typing in the passcode again. I have it memorized by now but it’s still a frustrating waste of time.

I don’t know that avast has anything to do with it because I never change avast settings I just disconnect and reconnect and it works, but before that it’ll never work, whether avast is on or not… I would try a more tech-support-friendly forum but I don’t even know what I’m trying to ask here, so I’m not sure what to search for or make a topic about or even what message board to go to.

Windows XP by the look of this, correct?

I’d say try taking your router offline and completely wipe what has been inputted onto it as far as information about your network then start from scratch. Every time I power cycle my Netgear router and cable modem, my shit goes limp (No internet from modem to router), so I have to run through the connection wizard every time.

Seeing as it’s only your computer in the whole house that does this, and it’s only your computer that’s connected to the wireless, I’d try re-installing the newest drivers for your Wireless NIC then reboot like it tells you too.

Quick idea came to me just now, you made sure your router and NIC have the same wireless channels (A, B, G)?

Another suggestion:

Disable the Belkin Utility and have Windows control your wireless configurations instead. The setup for that is a little more user-friendly.

How exactly do I do that? I’m a little worried to let windows handle anything but if it makes this easier I guess I could do that.

Dunno where it would be in your program, but somewhere in your Belkin utility should be an option that says something like “Let Windows control your wireless configuration” or something similar. Select that, and then your Wireless connection icon in the system tray should light up and then from that icon, you can add your wireless access point/passkey.

oic, that was easy. let’s see how that works. thanks brah

that belkin utility is freakin awful

I ended up having to turn it off to get anything to work on my PC

I think they spent their whole budget on artists and marketing, and the coding was done in half a day by some overworked intern
