I posted this on the Fighting Games board and someone suggested that I try this section. When I think of it, people here should be story fans, so why not?
Usually everyone talks about how much the story for one game changes and what they think of a game’s endings, but no one really speaks about their interest in playing games for the story or endings.
For me, I like to play every game just to see what happens to the particular ending. When a character has a cliffhanger like ending, that usually means that I’ll have to play the sequel to learn what happens.
Guilty Gear X2 and the early King of Fighters games are some fighting games that seem to have my interest in learning about the characters. And Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 3:3rd Strike are also games that have my interest when I reach the character specific battles.
IMO the story of a fighting game, no matter how small it is, is very important and beating the game also gives the same satisfaction as if I beat an RPG.
So, how many of you actually play fighting games to learn about the character’s story as well as see their endings?
I definately play for the story and endings. If the story sucks and doesnt draw me in I dont care how cool the game is to play I just usually dont get interested in the game
but I am casual gamer who plays video games maybe 4 hours a month at the most
Yeah, I want to see something when I finish a game for every specific character, mainly some kind of artwork. That’s why I’m usually not a big fan of games with huge rosters because that’s the first thing they tend to get rid of. Though SFZ3 managed to do a pretty good job of it with all of the endings even if there wasn’t too much in the way of new artwork. And KOF knocks it out of the park whenever they do it.
But it’s not the be all and end all for me. Sometimes it’s just fun to play stuff where you can have some good matches - like Super Dragon Ball Z or Jump Superstars 1 & 2 where stuff like endings doesn’t really bug me. Even MVC2 to a certain degree. Though I guess for those games if you want to know how stuff ends just read their manga and in the case of Marvel, read their comics - well the Marvel comics will at least tell you what they are up to anyways…
Let’s face it. Developers are lazy assholes when it comes to stories in fighting games. But I actually like it that way because it allows fanboys such as I to speculate as to how these tournaments happen and such. Other games have much better stories, but they aren’t discussed to the degree that SF would, sheerly because the developers were too lazy to put in a proper story. Kinda funny how that works, huh?
My first fighter was SF2 Turbo. I remember seeing the awesome artwork in the instruction booklet and reading the characters stories. I spent all my time playing the game to get the endings, and it was so rewarding when I did.
So to me, the characters, art and stories are what attracts me to fighters. I really dont care for the gameplay much.
The stories, art, and endings are what keep my interest (long term). I mean, if fighting games didn’t have some kind of background to the characters, I wouldn’t really bother.
I don’t know about yall, but when I beat a game & it has the same generic ending for everybody, I feel cheated. I play through the game to see an awsome ending, well not just but it’s kinda like a reward. The more challenging the game the more awsome I expect the end to be, i.e. Ninja Gaiden. I love it when they throw in special tidbits not just for beating the game with diff char, but also like ST ending where they give you a bonus for doing well or completing certain tasks. I wish Capcom woulda been a lil like Midway at least with the way they treat their endings as far as the story goes, the word scrolling thing kinda sucked. Bring on CG endings! :nunchuck:
I care more about the way a character plays. I could care less about the character background or story. I may become interested in a character because of the characters appearance or sound affects, but not because of the storyline – and even after becomming interested in playing the character and learning how the character plays, I still don’t care about the background.
Sort of a loaded question anyway. I’d be interested in asking the same question to players at a tournament and see if the results differ from this thread.
The only fighting games worth playing for the stories and the endings are Soul Calibur 3 and Tekken series. VF4 barely have any stories, Capcom goes on/off on their god damn stories, SNK reuses their stories all the time and Midway is crap now.
The reason why i like stories and endings to fighting games is because it brings their characters to life. When SC3 came out, we actually did get to see each characters personality which gives me interest in the character compare to SC2 and SC1, which had crappy endings and storyline to begin with.
its not the be all or end all, but i think good presentation, endings, character backgrounds etc etc definately add to the experience. i would prefer it if my fighting games had some sort of storyline.
in this respect, Snk vs Capcom MOTM and to a lesser extent SVC chaos was superior to CVS2 in terms of the character interaction, etc etc
CVS2 has tons of character to character winner to loser quotes, quotes for team members, specific / random quotes, etc. Each character has 100 of them. No lie, 100. Sadly none of them were translated for the English version. But all of them were more respectful to both Capcom and SNK characters while SVC Chaos went out of their way too trash Chun-Li for some reason turning her into an arrest them all lesbian dummy… (her ending is even bad - riding shotgun with Edi E. oooh…) their own character Mai faired no better coming off as slutier and stupider than ever… strange…
Well to be fair that game is the only CVS/SVC crossover that was not a tourney dubbed by SNK themselves so they needed the dialogs to come up with excuses for these people to fight each other. So at times comedy is needed. I really don’t think Chun-Li would challenge Kyo out of the blue, so “You’re under arrest!” works as good as anything else lol! Funny, the HK SVC Chaos comic turned it into a tourney anyway.
But yeah CVS2 didn’t have much in the way of endings, only a few lines of dialog.
SVC MOTM was perfect in every way. My second favorite of the crossovers after CVS2. Only 'cuz CVS2 is crazy with all of those grooves lol! Still that mini-Felica dancing game in SVC MOTM is the greatest mini-game EVER!
oh yeah, i forgot about those quotes, thanks sano. unfortunately, as you say there are so many i doubt youd find all of these quotes in english. you can get one or two from game faqs tho.
Yeah, if you want to see the quotes in Japanese so you know I’m not pulling a magic number out of my arse they are in the Japanese CVS2 Strategy Guide. Sadly, I’m having a tough time finding an image of it online right now, I’ll go look at mine and see if there’s something there that can help. Well, the cover is red and it had Kyo and Ryu on the cover, the picture from the CVS2 intro where they are about to punch each other.
But there are way too many quotes for anyone to ever translate all of them, 100 each, that’s crazy yikes… if there are some specific ones you want translated not in the faq below, maybe me and vasili10 can help out - but that’s up to him though he’s usually very cool with this sort of thing. Just please don’t go nuts and say “ALL OF TEH KYO’S QUOTES” 'cuz that’s way too much ha ha!
SHAMELESS PLUG - Me and vasili10 are still working on translating all of the CFE character to characters quotes, right now I’m super busy so I’ll try to update around March or so. They are very interesting and whoever is behind them seems to know an awful lot about SF storylines and Vampire AKA Darkstalkers storylines. And Warzard / Red Earth too of course.
And the great vasili10 on the regular translates TONS of SF related stuff that can be found on this thread so as usual keep an eye out for his posts on this thread, the later pages and beyond.
i used to read mortal combat story…in the SNES version it came with a lil comic illustrations…when MK2 came out i was still into the story…the MK3 messed it all up…
whatever works for you guys, no need to rush it and wow i should say. Those CVS2 quotes does give more respect to both companies instead of like SVC chaos where they dont even know each other half the time and everyone acts all cocky toward each other too. Damn, screw capcom of america, capcom of japan for life. thanks for the links sano.
