I’ve got one of these little beauties coming in the mail from overseas right now and I’d like to upgrade it with a Sanwa JLF joystick and some Seimitsu PS-14-KN buttons when it arrives, but I’ve had absolutely zero luck finding any pictures of what the stick looks like on the inside so I’m not sure what all supplies I’ll need to do the upgrade. I have done the same JLF + Seimitsu buttons upgrade to a Hori T5 stick before, so I’m definitely prepared to drill out the restrictor plate and desolder the original buttons from the PCB then wire it up if that’s what will be necessary, I’m just hoping that someone might be able to post a picture or two of the inside of one of these Ehrgeiz Sticks so I’ll know whether it can be upgraded the same way as a Hori T5 or if a different procedure will be required.
Because it’s for my wife and she insists on all her controllers having a JLF with a bat top and octagon gate, as well as Seimitsu buttons. The lady likes what the lady likes and I’m not going to argue with it.
She was aware of the other options out there, but she’s a big PS1 fan and wanted a dedicated PS1 stick with just the buttons and markings for the original PlayStation and nothing else, so this is the stick she decided to go with and I get to do the modding work to tailor it to her liking. If you guys are getting jittery about the idea of installing a new joystick and buttons in the Ehrgeiz Stick I’m not sure I should even tell you what’s going to happen to the housing when it gets here.
The Select and Start buttons are too small for the misses’ liking (she does have some mobility limitations and needs larger buttons to be able to press them easily) so I’m going to be removing them then drilling out the holes for these 16mm buttons to wire up to the PCB:
So yeah, the collector’s value of this Ehrgeiz Stick is going to go right out the window the day it arrives no matter what. But that’s alright. I paid $150 for it and at that price I think I’m pretty well entitled to do whatever the heck I or my other half wants to do with it.
There other PS1/PS2 sticks that are more mod friendly (arcade sticks for the PS1 and PS2 eras are functionally the same.
I don’t even know if the Ehrgeiz stick has the proper room for a Sanwa JLF.
Like I would honestly more likely to recommend a SNES stick converted to a PS1/PS2 stick (or dual-mod SNES+PS1/PS2)
At least some of the SNES sticks can take authentic arcade parts. The Capcom SNES Fight stick had a real Sanwa JLW or Seimitsu LS-40 inside.
If you want bigger Start and Select, skip the 16mm and go for the 24mm buttons.
quit shaming the guy if yall cant answer his damn question. it’s his stick, let him do what he wants.
and to help you, this is very similar to modding a hori fighting stick 3 or ex2. if you need detailed help on modding with a sanwa jlf, dm me and ill link you to images ive taken over the years. ive modded jlf’s on this hori design before.
Thank you very much for the info! If the layout inside is basically the same as a Hori Fighting Stick 3 or EX2 then I’ll have no trouble with it, since the procedure looks to be pretty much the same as modding the Hori T5 sticks that I’ve done before. Desolder all the original buttons from the PCB, install wires with quick disconnects in the PCB’s button terminal holes, grind down the tabs in the button holes, then drill 4 holes in the JLF’s restrictor plate to mount the joystick, solder the JLF harness wires to the original joystick microswitch wires and Bob’s your uncle.
Lol no, I’m afraid it won’t come with the yoyo. That’s actually a good thing for me though, since I was able to talk the seller down from $200 to $150 because the yoyo was missing and it wasn’t something the misses cared about anyway. She never did try the Namco stick because the L1 & L2 buttons are too small to be accessible, so she’s been using one of these Asciiware sticks as her only PlayStation controller for the last 5 years or so since she got into the PS1:
She’s gotten really good with it and has managed to beat every Tomb Raider and Resident Evil game with it, not to mention Doom and Final Doom on Ultra Violence difficulty, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired in terms of responsiveness and she’s been itching to get a nicer controller equipped with real arcade parts for the PS1 ever since I got her a couple Mad Catz sticks for other systems. We did try getting her a Hori T5 stick at first when she wanted to upgrade from the Asciiware stick to something that could take real arcade parts, but it ended up being too big and heavy to sit comfortably in her lap; thus the reason I ended up shelling out all the money for Ehrgeiz Stick. I think it’ll make a nice Valentine’s Day present.
For anyone who might be curious I received my Hori Ehrgeiz Stick in the mail today and am sorry to have to report that there is no way I can see to possibly fit a JLF stick in the case. The holes needed to mount the stick are there, but the case itself is about 1/4" too shallow to actually fit the JLF stick inside even with the mounting plate removed. Also worth noting is that the case is too shallow to fit standard sized Seimitsu buttons in it, though the low profile PS-15 ones will fit if anyone ever wants to replace the buttons in one these. As far as I can tell you’re stuck with the stock Hori joystick though, since the case is simply too shallow to fit a JLF in there.
Out of curiosity, would their be a way to apply art to a Ehrgeiz stick? I’ve seen it done with a EX2 but not this one. And finally, I don’t plan on doing this don’t worry but could you swap an EX2 panel with this? Assuming you reuse the Ehrgeiz parts.
Yeah, I’ve never worked on one of these but I’ve never heard anything good. From some of the finished mods I’ve seen I can’t understand why. I’d love to mod a blue, red or black virtual fighter 4 stick to have six buttons. Probably the hardest mods but all the more fun in my opinion.
