I agree with you that it’s not some big conspiracy that folks have about pretending to like the game
I just wish it was better
Having a lot of fun with KOF14 right now, looking forward to Tekken 7
We had a great run of good fighting games around 2011 w/ Marvel 3, updates to SF4, P4A, KOF13 being all fairly fresh and out near each other…makes me miss that time
As a category leader I would just hope for a lot more out of a main franchise Street Fighter game
It’s that, or sit at home another night of the week and don’t hang out, joke around, play some games for a couple hours
Those are the options, it’s not like “bad” in a vacuum but there’s a big part of me that’s hoping the next big fighting game is much better and sweeps up all the attention
I feel mostly the same way about SFxT as I do about this game
The problem is that when you give a portion of the cast below average buttons and a portion of the cast above average buttons, neither character gets to play with buttons if you’re playing smart players.
The stubby guy isn’t going to be sticking anything out thus the footsie guy has nothing to punish and has to try and break them down close up which leads to the common " it’s hard to open people up" complaints or “it’s just throw/trap/shimmy”
I mean who challenges a mid range monster character like Karin on the ground if you’re playing anyone other than Chun or Cammy? You don’t, because your reward is far lower than your risk.
For better or worse SF5 is probably the only fighting game Capcom is gonna be producing content on for the next 3-4 years. Shit, mothafuckas can barely keep this game up and running, they damn sure can’t do two. And its always gonna be THE fighter at major events/CPT/Evo, especially here on SRK. Other fighting games are either too niche(anime, KoF) or audiences that don’t have a lot of crossover with SF(3D fighters, Neatherrealm, Smash).
A lot of perfectly valid reasons have been given for disliking SF5 as a game, and that’s without getting its myriad shortcomings as a product, shit we’d be here all day listing those. But I honestly really enjoy the game as it is. Its the closet thing yet to my favorite SF, Alpha 2. I have more fun playing this than SF3 or SF4. And I’m looking forward to the various changes, patches, and content they add over the years, cuz the first version of SF is never the best. Hopefully those improvements can maybe get more people on board. And if not, I hope they find a fighting game they do enjoy. Even MK and KI got decent fighting games now for the first time in franchise history, so I mean you got options.
That’s true in that the stubby guy can’t use his buttons, but the footsie guy gets to basically choose when to use their buttons once the stubby guy has conceded. Which is why you see players like Wong, Alex Myers and Mago go to these characters and get results. The onus is on the character with the smaller buttons to do something and if they aren’t doing anything, it’s not hard to just walk them down with the buttons and build white chip until they’re basically forced to make a decision. Usually ends up being jump forward or dash in throw which won’t last against those level of players mentioned above.
Footsie characters like when the other character doesn’t press buttons. A big part of footsies is seeing when people aren’t pressing buttons and closing the gap by walking forward when they aren’t. If the opponent isn’t pushing that leads more room for you to press more things and less room for them to press anything. You don’t need to play reactively anymore once you walk them down and force them into obvious choices.
A rootkit in an update patch is unheard of in an official company, let alone a fighting game company for a patch to a videogame.
Other than that, sf5 is still a good game to me tbh. Albeit heavily fatigued by it after a lot of hours.
Then again that goes for most titles that aren’t mgs5/senran/pokemon/mvc2
To me, that’s the problem right there: Capcom is so deadset on making SF5 their next big game, they are pulling an NRS when they honestly should not have.
Again if fans and pros want to still play the game, then by my guest but I seriously hate the notion that the FGC at large is helmed by any single game especially a rushed to hell game with a company that is slowly going senile. Not to mention I’m not even certain anymore that SFV will last 4-5 years for how many countless problems that not only the game has, but Capcom continuously makes. The casual consumer base has all but given up on this game and I never stop hearing people who decided to just plain up and quit the game completely.
I mean for fuck’s sake, for as much as the issues other games’ and companies have, I have never seen a company so determined to absolutely ruin their game.
Needless censorship to get into the E-Sports glory(which is hilarious since you have Overwatch be E-Sports and one of it’s characters have a cleavage window as their main costume and that’s not touched in the slightest in the tournies she’s in on), Intentional workings of 8 frames(which certain games DO work around 6-7 frames, those games are built with it on a fundamental level while SF5’s definitely feel artificial), radio silence a good chunk of the time for updates, etc. Last time I checked, there aren’t even Packs for DLC costumes, you have to buy each of them separately which is something every other game always does.
So I’ll say it one more time:
I have no problem with those who rep Street Fighter V to the end. What I hate is those who believe that there should be a flagship for the FGC in general or that it’s okay that SFV in it’s state and the constant messups Capcom does should be swept under the rug BECAUSE SFV is the Flagship of the FGC.
The idea that SF5 may be the only fighting game that Capcom is dealing with for the foreseeable future is very very daunting. Why? A lot of the mainstream FGC don’t even dabble in other games. Tell me why KoF just came out with a new release and no one is talking about it or is playing it. Wasn’t this game supposed to be a pretty big release? Granted, some people still can’t get pass the graphics(Let’s keep it a buck, it looks like shit) but still. What’s next? Injustice 2? More Killer Instinct? ANOTHER year of MvC3? We do have Tekken to look forward to. In terms of anime fighters, Revelator is still good and Central Fiction looks nice, but will that be enough? I don’t know. I don’t hate SF5 but with the HORRIBLE start with SF5 along with the fuckups that Capcom is currently doing managing the game, I don’t think the longevity of the game will be all that fruitful.
I will tell you why, simply put the appeal of the series isn’t there for mainstream FGC players in many regions. Let us not pretend that KOF was ever close to being mainstream nearly as much as SF or MK ever has been. The graphics aren’t helping but i don’t think it is THE main reason.
I got the game to support it and ended up thinking it is " alright but not for me".
All of these games have their audiences. They will be playing them and most of them do fine commercially.
What I really don’t understand is why people are fixated or have some negative emotions towards Street Fighter being the most highlighted game in the fighting game scene. The game is being like that because it pulls the biggest numbers. It is that simple.
If you want the games you are talking about to succeed them have them be good enough with wide enough of an appeal, have them be the games with most tournament representative. People are acting as if Capcom or the Street Fighter fans are pulling people away from their games or something.
This make no sense to me because this game is hated on like a MOFO by basically everyone on the planet. It is hammered by reviewers, casuals and whatever.
Why do you get this " idea " that we are sweeping it under a rug ? It would take the biggest of assholes to say that everything is COMPLETELY fine. It just that we are a human beings that get bored of beating the already dead horse even more and do occasionally like to talk about other things.
I think only Lone Dragon think SFV has no problems. But the fact is Capcom has a very certain amount of power and influence over the FGC, and Street Fighter V is their game they’ve invested in. For better or worse, THIS is the Capcom fighting game for the rest of the decade, and in all likelihood its gonna be the centerpiece of every fighting game local/major/tournament as well.
Tekken, Neatherealms, Smash, KI, GG…they all have their audiences, they’re commercially successful, but there isn’t a huge overlap between them, much less Street Fighter. They can all co-exist in the same ecosystem.
KoF…lets be real KoF has been niche since 1994. Its never established itself in the mainstream the way SF, MK, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Smash, etc ever did. Its big in Mexico, but America/Japan…RIP. People aint checking for that, especially how unattractive it is. Its not like SF players were ever gonna pick up that game. We’re talking about a community that called the early 2000s “the Dark Ages” despite best in the series KoF 02, Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 5, Guilty Gear X2, lol. If there isn’t a new Street Figther they wanna play, they just won’t play anything, period. Its simplicity, accessibility, and inherent popularity puts it on another plane of fighters with a mostly unique audience. Every other fighting game has to differ from SF because it set the standard, adding on complexities like air dashes, short hops, block buttons and fatalities, ULTRA COMBOSSSSSSSSSSSS, 3D movement, etc. Some of em catch on, some of em dont, but Street Fighter will always be Street Fighter.
Nearly everyone I know who plays SF dabbles in other fighters. Capcom doesn’t have the money to churn out fighters like they used to. And the only other series that does well is Marvel, and they no longer have the license to make those games.
The thing that brings me back to streetfighter more than other games is:
1 community is simply bigger therefor more people to play, therefor a less boring experience playing against the same 3 dudes all the time.
2 netcode. Streetfighter and skullgirls and KI are the only newer generation fighting games with rollback netcode. I went hard on skullgirls for 3 years. Absolutely amazing game. But… The community is kinda small and I got bored. KI is a game I really want to play but I don’t really like how the game feels. And it’s community is kinda small. I can watch matches of the game and be entertained though and I keep telling myself to play it… But I inevitable keep coming back to streetfighter for some reason.
Bottom line though is that I won’t give a game the time of day besides some trial modes and stuff if it has bad online. And only the 3 games I mentioned have good online outside Japan.
Xrd I stopped liking cause I got tired of how snowbally it is for the first person to get a confirm when their opponent doesn’t have burst. And it’s netcode is terrible anyways.
3 games out on newer generation consoles are hard for me to get into because I haven’t shelled out the money for an arcade stick that works on either of them even though I own both consoles.
I already have so many sticks it feels like a waste to buy more sticks so I just play streetfighter and fighting games in general on the PC since older sticks work on the PC.
Anywho, those are my biggest reasons for not playing other games… Though TBH if there are a lot of people playing them, I will play just about any fighting game. When I moved to tennessee for 3 months 20 years ago… There was big scene at the arcade of about 15 players that played MK3 religiously. So even though I never paid the game any mind in my state of Cali… I learned the game when in Tennessee. Pretty fun game TBH. Very competitive. Lots of characrers and strategies to use.
But yeah, it’s all about the players and community in the end. Until a company designs an AI that plays like a human. ( I hear that ki has this in their ghost replays thingy or something)
I see from other places than just here where people do admit that Capcom fucked up royally with the rootkit, but I’ve also seen plenty of people defend Capcom in those other places, SRK just has enough rational people where you don’t see nonsense like that out in the open.
And again, when did I say you or everyone is sweeping it under the rug? You know exactly who I’m referring to when I say something like that: The fanboys and the shills who desperately want to pretend that Capcom cannot do no wrong and everyone who dares bring up anything wrong with it must want to see the game fail because they must suck or want their game to be in the spotlight.
And that right there is my problem because honestly, that’s an impossibility that all games can exist in the same ecosystem, yet one is so dominant compared to the others that it should be okay when you see massive messups like these. I mean let’s look at Real Life Sports in America, yes there will obviously be one sport that gains more attention than the others at times but last time I checked I haven’t seen almost everyone declare that Football is the centerpiece of American Sports. I mean Baseball is stated to be America’s Past Time, but that’s more or less due to how old that sport is.
My point is that if THIS is supposed to be the Flagship of the FGC, what would you think people would say for other games if this one has so many problems and a company that quite frankly is basically about to stop giving a shit?
You can’t really kid yourself, football IS the centerpiece of American sports. There is more money, advertising and hype going into it than any sport in the country. The Super Bowl might as well be a holiday. Plus a lot of it goes on during the holiday season where it’s easier for people who aren’t big into sports to end up just sitting down and watching it because other people are.
This isn’t anything new. We’ve seen plenty of times companies like EA and Activision be talked about as near criminals of the video game world, but their games still sell and people still play them competitively. Star Wars Battlefront lacking content with considerable glitches, Madden making you pay 60 a year AGAIN, but EA is TOO STRONK.
You don’t have to like SFV, but just like SFIV before it you have to respect that it IS the competitive fighting game.
For all of the people who want their success over SFV, you can just quote the next NRS game that is inevitably going to sell better than SFV. That’s not going to be enough though. When people see that MKX now and inevitably Injustice 2 won’t have the turnouts at tourneys that SFV does and still won’t be the closing game at tourneys, people will go back to bitching about SFV and how it still dominates the FGC.
Hopefully people will act like sales is what counts the most when Injustice 2 comes out. They most likely won’t though.
See I disagree with both of those. Football isn’t exactly the centerpiece of American Sports because of the Super Bowl itself(That’s like saying because games get huge EVO numbers, why don’t we see those numbers all the time for every other tournament). The Super Bowl might as well be the equivalent of EVO and be seen as it’s own entity in comparison to how much Football gets otherwise.
And secondly, no, I don’t have to like or respect the game because it’s THE competitive fighter…when I see a company make constant mistake after mistake. I can respect the COMMUNITY so maybe you should say that rather than the game. I’ve seen people who respect communities for keeping a game afloat than the game itself and at the same time, I’ve seen people not even giving anything of the sort to that community simply due to the fact it’s not SF.
And let’s seriously not bring up EA and Activision…
CoD has been having lower and lower sales for quite some time and basically EA basically lives off of Madden and the loyal fans who have nowhere else to go due to NFL Association deciding to only let one game have the license.
Honestly? I laughed at this as hard as I could have when I first read this then started shaking my head.
The games themselves is stopping themselves from overtaking SF…really? You do realize that SF is on top of the mountain because in basic terms people have allowed it to be right? Yes it got there on it’s own merits but who keeps allowing it to stay up there even when people try and toss around alternatives? Even when people try and get their games heard? Why is there barely any press for those games in newsites compared to SFV even when the companies themselves try and go the distance?
I don’t even remotely understand that when I have seen people doing their best to get their game heard and it simply gets ignored because it’s not SF.
There’s nothing overtaking SF but the games themselves? No, you got that backwards. There’s nothing stopping any other game from overtaking SF but the very name and brand of SF overtaking the genre as a whole. In exactly the same way you will have people cry and complain about how Final Fantasy has stopped being Final Fantasy at whatever number but don’t even touch any other JRPG, you will have people so absorbed into the very nature of Street Fighter that no matter what other game that’s better or is a suitable alternative, they just stay at Street Fighter simply because of the name and nature of the series.
Been discussed many times before but in an ideal situation for capcom it’d be mvc4 teaser trailer, darkstalkers teaser trailer and some news about balance changes each season or general idea of where they think the game is at right now.
I think other companies just wasn’t as quick to take to new platforms.
While console/arcade is still the main area I think these days, Pc has seem to become a pretty viable option [As a noob in the Pc realm of few years for gaming]
Kof14 could have done with delays. Arc systems is niche anime dashing. Mkx had some of the worst issues at launch but that beta improved a hellton.
When these other areas pick up speed is when I see Capcom going into overdrive with more content polish.
@Xhominid How exactly is that our or Capcom’s fault ?
I am sorry but if the people of these games put in the work, market themselves and ultimately have the most entrants in tournaments THEN they will be the spotlight. I am pretty sure that Smash is doing this and it is big enough to have its own scene that is as big if not bigger. They have their own events and do their own shit and that is what should be done.
I am sorry but what you are saying screams of jealousy and hatred toward a brand simply because what you like isn’t popular enough to replace it.
I am sorry but when at an event like EVO the game with 400-500 entrant should overtake the games with at least 2000 entrants simply because YOU think they are better. Why are you concerned with what sells what or who does whatever ? If SF isn’t for you and it is AMAZINGLY obvious then go play DOA or GGXrd or whatever you want, make video guide, get people into your phenomenal games and make tournaments.
You are simply wanting guys like Alex Valle and Mr Wizard who have been SF fans for years and years to stop promoting it and supporting it because Xhomind can’t accept Capcom mistakes and therefore they should replace it with DOA because you find it better ?
Go be your scene Alex Valle, or James Chen or whatever and get people into it instead of this constant speeches.
People like playing SF or like playing SF even though they dont like it. Thats how it’s been and thats how it’ll always be. The most squeaky clean thing is never the most popular thing.
