The topic of damage is interesting. High damage has the pro of letting a solid read give a significant advantage, but the con of allowing a âluckyâ hit to turn an entire round around. Low damage has the pro of giving the advantage to a consistent player, but the con of not necessarily allowing a hard read or a big combo make a big difference in the end result, particularly if the player with the life lead starts playing defensively. Itâs a balancing act, since you presumably donât want UMvC3-style fishing for one hit kills, but you also donât want a SFxT time out snorefest. Neither high nor low damage is inherently superior.
For example, I think FANG is a decent character that is just really hard and frustrating to play due to his low damage output on otherwise rather good moves. He requires such high levels of consistency that the people capable of using him to his full potential are probably extremely few.
As for DSP, remember this is the man who went on long rants about Justin Wong being ass and irrelevant in 2009 because âSFIV has the most lenient combo windows of any SF game and he still doesnât win majorsâ. He often might have a point if the arguments backing his points up werenât complete nonsense.
For people that donât like or respect DSP here is Xianâs recent thoughts on SF5 via a Q&A redditâŚ

Could you please share us your in-depth thoughts on SFV so far? Youâve been tweeting about the game lately but would be nice if you can write down your thorough opinion without confining to a word limit.

Gameplay has alot of issue, 8F lag. Lack of footsies, there is but not as much intended it to be. I dont think sf4 is a great fighting game either as it allows too much abusive mechanics such as backdashing (Chun-Li for example). Characters are not all equal for defensive mechanics. SFV is simple but doesnât have any satisfying feeling like in another game or in sf4, in other games like kof you do alot of combos and you have a good sense of satisfaction, in sf4 you play footsies you whiff punish and you feel really good. SFV is more preemptive footsies and where you press things earlier and predict and buffering more. A mix between dash and jump is really hard to react so people dont enjoy the way they lose now. The game feels really dull and not precise. It make you wonder if you lost because you guessed wrong or simply pushed your buttons too late. In short, youâre NOT in control of your game at 100 %. You cannot react to certain things (try to punish Nash dash on reaction for example, itâs impossible). But I think online is much better to practice because of simplicity in the game too.
People enjoy finding new stuff and sfv have less rooms for these creativity. Those that can have creative setups idea and restricted to have a weak neutral game or weakness in general
way too much to say , hopefully there will be a day we can sit down for a coffee to talk instead
So when Xian says it, itâs alright but when DSP says it, itâs wrong? Donât get me wrong, I know that Xian is a well decorated pro player but the points that are faulting SF5 donât have much to do with the competitive aspect. They are universal for pro and casual players alike. So why are people discrediting DSPâs opinion?
He does and it happens on a consistent basis but as Street Fighter fans who, hopefully, have no blind bias for the game, we can definitely acknowledge that what heâs saying has some credence to it.
Iâve never played SF5 but have watched it on Twitch for entertainment. Iâve only played the SF4 series twice. Once on an arcade machine in 2008 and once on a console in 2009, but have seen it on stream. As a spectator of both games, the SF4 series was more hype with the combos and all. SF5 seems more newbie newb friendly than the SF4 series. Whatâs up with not losing to chip damage. Chip damage is and always will be a part of SF. Bet, if I start playing SF5 (who knows when/if that ever happens), I will probably beat 80% of the players without trying that hardâŚ
While I donât hate SF5, DSP surprisingly gave a rant about why SF5 isnât what itâs chalked up to be and even took shots at Alex Valle and LI Joe for comments and statements theyâve made defending the game. What do you guys agree with? What did you guys disagree with?
I watched DSPâs video and I have to say, if weâre talking about his criticisms about SFV itself and in general how people defend the game a lot (myself included), heâs right for the most part. The 8F, balance, all that shit, it needs to be a lot better.
But where I have to call bullshit is on this notion that people are pretending to like the game. SFV, even with all its problems, is my favorite fighting game right now. Iâm not pretending to like it. I bought and played some KoF14, didnât like how it felt compared to SFV (or KoF13). I played some SF4 the other day, found it borderline unplayable now (and Im an 09er). Guilty Gear just doesnât appeal to me, and Iâve played BlazBlue so I know what to expect somewhat. Dead or Alive 5, I own it and played it a bit, but itâs whatever. Tekken 7 isnât out yet. Soul Calibur 6 and VF6 are 1-2 years away. Marvel 3 is kinda dead and Marvel 4 is 3+ years away.
Soooooo⌠SFV is what I play right now. Could it be better? Of course, it could be a lot better. But Iâm going to keep playing it because for me, itâs still the best one out right now.
