I have a chance to get the Roku 2 for like 30 bucks…but I’m cheap. I don’t pay for monthly internet video bs like Netflix and Amazon Video. Does Roku give you free access to stuff you can’t get with cable (Brighthouse), or on your pc, and without a monthly fee?
If you have cable then you don’t need a Roku. But, with Netflix and other streaming services, you can pretty much go cable free unless you want premium channels and must watch it now. HBO, Showtime, etc. Other than that, most of what you want can be covered with netflix either streaming straight to your TV via a Roku, or your PC or even phone now I guess. What isn’t covered you can have sent to your house in DVD format for a few bucks extra a month. It’s much more cost efficient than cable for people who aren’t TV junkies.
People who like sports often complain, but streaming live sports events is becoming more popular.
Also, there are private channels, but I don’t know much about that. Google "Roku private channels"
for info on that.
I’m about to get one. I do not have cable and my PC, hooked to my TV + Netflix is how I watch my shows. I don’t miss out on very much. the biggest thing I think I missed so far is Game of Thrones, which I can get on DVD when I get the chance. My opinion: try it, it’s really cheap and in the long run may save you LOTS of money should you decide to boot your cable provider.
Interesting, thanks for the info!
I have one of the older units, had it for about a year and a half maybe, still works great. There are some free channels/apps, but nothing spectacular. I got rid of cable and did the Roku/PS3/Netflix combo, with a helping of NHL Gamecenter for my hockey needs, and both work great on the Roku. It’s a nice little device, but the primary use for it is Netflix IMO. If you’re not going to use it, I’m not convinced the free channels are worth it, tho there are some interesting ones. I like that the box is tiny, takes little power, and works flawlessly over wifi, it was $ well spent.
For 30 bucks, I would definitely do it.
Here’s my thing… Roku = 30. Netflix =7.99 Hulu Plus= 7.99 Cable bill = 70-120 / month. Just something to think about depending on what you watch.
