Eh screw the GP2X. Too hard to find, and too expensive to bother with. Plus appears to have a history of crappy D-Pads.
Need to learn how to get PSP stuff working, from what i’ve seen it does a fantastic job.

I have a PSP coming in a couple of days for the purpose of emulation. I’ll keep you updated on what I think compared to the Dingoo.
I just got a dingoo a week or 2 ago. So far I’m really satisfied with it, especially for $83.00. I’ve been mostly playing Chrono Trigger haha. I also have SNK vs Capcom Chaos for NEOGEO and it runs really well, and has awesome graphics to boot. I’ve only really messed around with the shoto’s but pulling off there moves are no problem.
The dingoo has potential but the PSP no doubt offers the superior emulation experience. Only question is how easy/hard is it to get stuff running on it…
I also just bought a PSP. Managed to find one used in good condition $74 shipped on e-bay.
I used to be into the PSP emulation scene…ill admit it was fun…till my PSP crapped out for hella unknown reasons.
trust me, every time you flash your PSP you’re risking bricking your PSP (i used to stare at that screen hella scared wondering if itll fuck up…LOL)…also, Sony is WELL aware of people exploiting their hand held and are constantly making it harder and harder for people to hack their product, because of this…it causes Homebrew users on the PSP to update and flash their system CONSTANTLY.
The last custom firmware on my PSP before it took a dead shit was 3.40 OE-A…I have no clue what the latest Custom Firmware on the PSP is.
but hey, its all preference, if you want a PSP…go for it…just remember what i said tho.
I know theres risk involved but many out there have done this and had it work fine.
I don’t plan on doing much firmware flashing, just grabbing the latest one or whatever that allows me to run what i want on it, and leave it at that.
I’m planning on getting a Pandora, but I wouldn’t recommend one, at least until they start really shipping and there is real feedback for them.
I don’t get the gripes about the GP2x pad. It sucks, but PSP dpad is crap as well, and the buttons feel really mushy on a PSP, too. So what’s the argument, It’s trading bad for bad. If the main purpose of the system is to emulate, I’d reccomend wiz. The PSP’s screen is better though.
I disagree that the psp screen is better. Yes it’s bigger, however the wiz uses oled technology so you don’t get any of the terrrible ghosting that plagues the psp. Also the colours are more vibrant.
I have an F-200 and its freaking awesome cps2 runs perfect but mvs is hit and miss. I don’t really play fighting games on it though and it runs metal slug just fine so I’m happy with that. It also runs genesis/snes/nes/dos/scummVM perfectly. Amiga apparantly works too but seems like a lot of effort to set up
Also everyone only seems to be mentioning the emulating capabilities of the gp2x and forgetting that it does have LOTS of its own apps and games. Payback is freaking awesome as is blox and there’s a few pretty damn good shmups. for various apps/games/emulators check out the GP2X file archive
I had a DS but once I got the GP2X the DS just gathered dust.
I think I’m just gonna keep my eye on the Wiz scene and snatch one up when I have the spare cash.
On another (sort of related) note, does anyone have one of these:
I’d love to pick up a Pandora but the production is too limited right now. After I’m done with PSP I’m just going to switch over to an open source handheld. I’m really tired of Sony constantly locking out features that should have been part of the PSP on day one. An open handheld powerful enough to emulate Dreamcast should be possible a year or two from now.
I wanted a clone system for a while but they all have their individual quirks that make the original system superior.
Hey thanks for the link Kyle.
Yeah, no problem. Digit Press has a ton of information on all of these. The Retro Duo was the one I wanted as well because it supports the original SNES controllers. People were reporting videos issues with it so I ended up passing. I have a ton of NES and SNES carts so it seemed convenient, but I’m sticking with the real systems for now.
See that you’re in NYC as well. Do you know of any stores that would have the Wiz for purchase? I’m thinking some place in Chinatown has gotta have it …
Hey everybody, new member here.
Figured I’d give my 2 cents. I had a GP2X for about a year or so. It was great, and it emulates decently well. However, I don’t recommend that anyone goes around looking for one. Because of the GP2X Wiz, Dingoo and pandora, interest in developing for the GP2X has almost disappeared. So, emulators aren’t going to work any better than they do now. SNES isn’t quite where it should be, and the neo geo and mame emulators could have used some improvements, and those improvements will never come.
So, unless you have $330 to drop for the Pandora, I recommend buying either a Dingoo or GP2X Wiz. Then, the Dingoo is less than 1/2 the cost of the Wiz ($82 on DealExtreme). The controls on the Dingoo are considered better. Some day Wiz may be able to emulate PSX at best, but that’s probably the only thing it’ll have over the Dingoo.
The D-pad could surely use some work though. As someone earlier in this thread said, the d-pad is pretty low in the unit, so you can’t feel diagonal presses at all. I heard the Wiz controls are no better. My GP2X F-100 mk2 had the joystick, which wasn’t great, but at least diagonals were decent, and an alternate d-pad mod was very easy to do and worked amazingly well (you can find a video of the mod I made on youtube).
I ordered some of the PSP replacement caps today that were mentioned in this thread and on the Dingoo-Scene blog. They’re only $2.30 or so, so we’ll see how they work. Gadgetmiser on dingoo-scene likes them a lot though. Some advice: if you do order the caps and a dingoo from DealExtreme, don’t order them in one order. Make 2 separate orders, because otherwise you’ll have to pay for shipping.
I bought a black Dingoo, and I’m relatively happy with the purchase. Emulators still leave a bit to be desired, but Dingoo-Linux is VERY close to release (today or tomorrow) so good emulators will come out VERY soon.
If you want more info, and have more info to contribute, please check out the links in my sig, and if you have info to contribute, please add stuff to the wiki. It’s relatively bare right now.
Just want to add that a decent source of info on the Dingoo is dingoo-digital.com
That’s where most of the custom firmware is released.
Yeah, dingoo-digital is pretty nice. The custom firmware doesn’t do a whole lot though. Still waiting on Dingoo-Linux.
BTW: I’m really glad I finally made an account on this site…I love fighting games and prior to this I didn’t know about GGPO! Best of all, it works in WINE!
Yeah, Linux on Dingoo is going to be awesome.
I’m still getting a PSP just because I like toys, but I’m really excited to see what comes out of the Dingoo.
I came sooooooo close to buying a Dingoo. Emulation just too rough right now.
I only wanted a solid handheld emulation system, and PSP looks like the best. Plus i was able to score a used one in excellent shape for cheap.
PSP gets better scores simply for being easily available, and a lot cheaper.
With GP2X you’re lucky to find one to begin with, and those found are going to be very expensive. Not worth it.
