Any tips on getting better with an arcade stick?

I’ve been playing MvC2 for years now, and after seeing the high tier stuff and the EVO videos, I REALLY want to get into the game competitively. So while I try to find that arcade perfect Dreamcast copy and the cheap system to play it on, I’m hammerin the buttons on my Tekken 5 stick and playin it on my PS2.

Any tips for workin the joystick as well as the D-Pad for someone who isnt really used to it yet?

well i can finally say im fully comfortable with stick… started playing on it in mid september… best advice i could give u is try breaking everything down… like start by doing dragon punches, quarter circles dashing… learn all the basics while u give ur hands a chance to get used to stick… then move on to the more complicated shit:looney:

I just plugged mine in and played the computer until I got used to it, and then hit up the training mode for combos and stuff.

Appreciate the advice! Getting used to it isnt really taking as long as I thought it would.

this might sound really stupid, but this is serious for marvel…

the basic shit, like dragon punches, half circles, 5/8 circles (half circle + tiger knee), and being able to go back to neutral mid direction are EXTREMELY important for MvC2. You can’t get by without having all that shit 100% mastered.

So go in, work on your ability to do directional shit like that, and you’ve done half of it.

Then go into training and don’t play, practice. Work on your combos and break the shit down, breaking it into seperate parts and having different setups.

examples:

working on a double jump combo:

know what move you DJ off of (in cammy’s case, we’re using mp, so her double jump normally would be, lp, lk, lp, neutral, dj, magic series…

now, practice it like this…

sj, lp, lk, lp, double jump lp
sj, lp, lp, double jump, lp
sj, lk, lp, double jump, lp
sj, lp, lk, lp, double jump, lk
etc…

work on all the scenarios. learn how to maximize damage and positioning. don’t just do an air combo for the sake of it. learn, can i capitalize after i super jump forward, super jump back, and go straight up. sentinel’s fffly and storm’s LAx2LS combos work better if you jump straight up or back just a tad. cable’s nade combo only works, afaik, if you jump in closer…

don’t look at things as combos anymore, look at what you can do after the combo, which is more important…

think about it this way…

y’oure fightng a cable with 100% life and 5 meters. your character has 50% life left, and you have no meter… you do a 90% combo that let’s them get a free AHVB at the end of it, or you do a 40% combo that will keep you safe with 5/6 of your options upon landing. What do you do? no shit, that should be obvious, no? lol

so work all of that into your execution. there’s a whole lot more to execution than just being able to do attacks and combos.

and like said… PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
