Any point getting into 3rd Strike?

I’m going casual for 3S. It’s really, really fun but honestly it’s too unbalanced for me to get into. I don’t enjoy using any of the top tiers (I like Hugo and Q), and it’s just too hard to win sometimes with the lower tiered characters.

It’s a shame that the most interesting and unique designs are all floating toward the lower end of the spectrum in 3S. Hell even Sean is twice as original as Ken is, and Ryu has a fresh new feel to him in this game.

I’ve only played it for about 4 hours total now but I’m already really enjoying it. Parrying is something completely new to me though (never played CVS2 or any of the SF3’s before) so that’s going to take me a while to get used to.

None of this post was relevant to you.

Actually this post was quite relevant to me since it shows people are still getting into 3S. It is just so awesome to hear of someone new coming into 3S and giving it a chance even with SF IV out and still new. As far as winning with Hugo or Q, that is very possible but get extremely comfortable with ALL of their moves, what links into what, make sure you always hit confirm into super or into a meaty combo, get somewhat decent with parries and combine all this with a quick reaction speed and good hand/eye coordination and you will have so much fun beasting with these lower tiers.

How could you possibly notice the impact “tiers” allegedly have on the gameplay after playing the game for 4 hours? That’s not enough time to learn a single character, even. It’s obvious your so-called “opinion” was formed from experience that consists of watching youtube videos and parroting what more experienced players have said about 3S’s balance here on SRK or elsewhere (and pretending you noticed these quirks on your own).

It goes without saying that you’ll notice some of the bullshit that goes on in matchups like, say, Twelve VS SA2 Chun even by playing 3S at the level you’re currently at - But let’s take SF4’s (a game I’m certain you love and feel is a competent SF, to me you come off like just the kind of player that would love SF4) “tiers” - The odds stacked against Twelve are not much different from the odds of SF4 Claw VS Sagat. Or SSF2T Claw VS anyone nearing the bottom of the tier list.

People are so full of shit these days. Just admit 3S demands too much devotion and manual dexterity for you to properly enjoy and go back to doing DF, DF DPs in SF4.

awaits your neg rep :coffee:

I’m not going to neg you. But you don’t know me or how I play. You don’t know how long I’ve been playing fighting games and you don’t know how easy it is for me to look at something and say “Yeah, that’s pretty retarded.”

Kens’ EX air hurricane, for example, is pretty retarded against Hugo. I’m not parroting. I know. All of Hugos’ normals are as slow as shit and the ones that hit overhead are all very short range. His dash is a liability and his jump speed is a telegraph of intentions.

Granted he has an OK corpse mixup but at the end of the day you aren’t winning using Hugos’ tools, you are 100% outsmarting your opponent. 90% of his fucking shit is unsafe.

Whereas it’s absolutely apparent to me that with Ken, Chun, Yun, and possibly Akuma, they are simply utilizing their’ amazing tools. That alone makes them good. They just have shit that works.

They all have amazing normals, great multi-faceted tools in their’ specials, awesome supers and all can be as slippery as hell to get in on.

I’m not saying that the players I’ve played are any indication of the limits of play for 3S, but many of them have vocally expressed their’ doubt at my being new to 3S. Solid basics carries over from one game to another, and I use that to analyze what I play and make some preliminary assumptions, which, in this case, happen to be fairly accurate.

And for the record; Yes, SF4 is awesome.

So you’re telling me you’ve noticed the current status quo of the game’s balance from 4h of playing? What else could fuel a comment like “3S is too unbalanced for my tastes” without coming off as pure pretention?

Then let’s find out, if lag allows. I’m Echo Black on GGPO/2DF (though my 2DF account is only ever used by my brother, so I’d prefer GGPO)

You pick a bad example, as Hugo is not exactly one of the most gimped characters (currently he’s considered B tier, above or equal to roughly half the cast) - You get to use plenty of Hugo’s normals in serious play: Jabs, st. MP, cr.MK/MP and possibly st. HP, with j. neutral HP sometimes and obviously his body splash. Out of these, only j.HP is retardedly easy to parry on reaction. Sure you won’t use stuff like his forward + HP his cr. HK ever, but his possession of a few telegraphed normals is not the real reason behind the difficulty of properly playing Hugo

That’s untrue even if you treat him as a character that doesn’t rely on throws to deal damage - cr.lp x 2 into SA3 is safe (in the sense that anyone can see the lps hitting and confirm into super). It can also be comboed into from crossup (or any jumping normal) using a single lk/lp instead of lp x 2. Damage is great, also plenty of EX meter. Claps are pretty safe on block (crazy parry bait, though, never use it on the opponent’s wakeup if he knows how to play unless you plan on whiff -> 720/360) and combo into SA3. Almost nobody uses SA1 Hugo here in South America, that’s how viable he is with SA3

Eeeh, your observations are not wrong, but what makes each of these good is probably just stuff inside your head that’s far from reality, which is:

Chun: Crazy priority on pokes, easiest confirm into (damaging!) super of the entire game, that’s crazy safe and from a cr.MK no less, ridiculously good Kara Throw

Ken: His normals are actually worse than the other Shotos (save Sean), 3-stock SA3 and all the ways to confirm into it are what makes Ken buff as fuck. Pick Dudley if you want a character with “amazing normals”

Yun: Genei Jin lol. Actually a somewhat weak character without GJ, like Urien without Aegis

Akuma: I’d put Makoto here, Akuma is great but far less op than the other three you mentioned

“Fairly accurate” = You figured out balance issues that have been fueling discussion for 10+ years now with four hours of play :coffee:

Challenge accepted. As soon as I get back from university, you gon’ get it. DHEvil on GGPO. LET’S DO THIS.

Don’t forget to PM me so we can plan on logging at the same time, odds are we live on different timezones
