I just can’t see her as the Major at all. Having read the manga and watched the shows it’s difficult seeing this character as a white chick. Script and story didn’t help either. Maybe if the writing was better my perception would’ve changed. Just felt like Scariet Jho insert of a Jason Bourne movie.
Only positives were the visuals.

I am the opposite, although my experience with Ghost in the Shell is mostly through various anime adaptations. The casting besides her height did not bother me. The reveal in the movie kind of did mostly because it felt odd putting a new version of the Major’s past felt odd in this movie that seemed to piece together elements from all the various canon.
For the movie at least, the Major literally has a robotic body and a big point of it is how the body she’s in isn’t really specifically “her”. I don’t think it matters what ethnicity would have played the role because it basically takes the stance of “I think therefore I am” since all that is still natural for her is her brain IIRC. Apparently the Hollywood movie is not even about the same thing and also has an opposite conclusion of “future and tech = bad” so it’s debatable if it even matters I guess…
Granted, if you wanna argue not from the story theme view but from the real world situation of not using Asian actors, then sure.

Ghost in the shell could have been set in america sure
The reason that alita gets no backlash on all white people is it is set in a future world not specifically japan
Plus if it is japan the major would choose to be made to look like a member of akb48
