Anime & Manga Thread v.5 FAQ/IRC: See OP. Welcome to 2017

I don’t know how they are going to wrap up Psycho-Pass with just one episode. It doesn’t seem like enough time to have a proper after math and we’ll end up with a bunch of unfinished loose ends. Makes that one background episode on Yayoi a complete waste because they didn’t use that episode as a means to start another arc, and the episode didn’t really build the character that well. It could have been used to help flesh out these last 2-3 episode of the series, in my opinion. If we do end up with a bunch of loose ends I hope there’s an OAV, special Blu-Ray episode, or movie to help cover this.

I think time restraints really hurt Psycho-Pass and it could have been a much stronger show given more episodes. I have to agree that there isn’t enough development to the majority of the supporting cast but the development between Kougami, Akane, and Makashima has been really strong.

[details=Spoiler]I think Masaoka was one of the better developed characters of the background characters though it was done in very subtle ways. He was the mentor role to Kougami, Ginoza, and Akane in many episodes so while he wasn’t directly developed like those characters he shined through in several scenes just by being there to guide them. I’m not sure if revealing him to be Ginoza’s father so late into the series was the wisest thing because it sort of forced those awkward father/son moments between them and it didn’t give enough time to really build on that relationship. It served it’s purpose in making Masaoka’s death more meaningful, especially with Ginoza present but it could have had more impact if it was developed further.

Out of the enforcers, it’s tough to say whether Kougami or Akane will make it out of the series. I think Ginoza, Yayoi, and Shion are safe at this point and killing them has no purpose outside of pure shock factor, which is too shallow of a reason to do it, in my opinion. I have two predictions for the possible outcome of the next episode.

  1. Akane becomes the martyr to stop Makashima while preventing Kougami from killing him. Thus ‘saving’ him as she intended.

  2. Kougami dies either in the process of killing Makashima, protecting Akane, or a last minute back stab by the Sibyl System.[/details]

Also, speaking of Urobuchi’s writing. I ended up watching Madoka Movie part 1 since it was showing at a local theater and there was two groups of fan girls who were just giggling non-stop throughout the movie. It got to the point where I had to tell them to stfu midway through but am I missing something here? I don’t recall Madoka being a comedy so I don’t understand what was so goddamn funny about the movie. It was laughter at the most inappropriate parts of the movie and I was just boggled at why that was comedic to them. It’s like the cases I hear about little kids laughing at the beginning of Pixar’s Up where they go over the old man’s past and how he ended up the way he is. Most reactions from adults were tears but apparently little kids found that shit hilarious. /rant

Robotics;Notes and Zetsuen no Tempest shifting into end game mode and are doing a really good job of it. Nothing really surprising coming out of either series at this point but the execution thus far has been really good.

If I find a show entertaining I hardly doubt that knowing plot points is going to make me not find it entertaining.

Also what exactly did I spoil other then the death of a character? I’ve given no plot points, scenes or anything concerning the final episode.

all caught up on ssy and ready for next weekend

[details=Spoiler]Does Satoru have a piece of Shun in his mind too? That’s kinda fucked up if he doesn’t.

like satoru can’t stop thinking about the D either but shun’s like “nah man i’ve had my eye on saki this whole time”[/details]

Saint Young Men OVA isn’t as gut-busting as I expected it to be. It’s a more mellow type of humour rather than the in-your-face type from Arakawa Under the Bridge (also by the same mangaka). A couple of the skits were pretty damn funny despite most of them being rather slow-going though. I’m sure this style is the type that’s suppose to grow on you over time, but with a single OVA out so far, there isn’t much chance to do so. Looking forward to the film that they’re making later on though.

What so spoiling only one thing doesn’t deserve a spoiler tag? Okay. lol

I watched Ookami Kodomo today and thought it was a beautiful story; it was simple but well executed, much like Toki o Kakeru Shoujo and Summer Wars. The last conflict followed by the ending wasn’t what I thought it would be but it was really good nonetheless. After seeing this movie it seems like Japan really likes the concept of a single parent raising (a) child/children with a fantasy element added in. I think late last year, “Letters to Momo” was released, which had a similar concept. Ghibli’s Tonari no Totoro was one of the first movies to tell this kind of story as well.

I think what really separates Ookami Kodomo story telling from other similar shows/movies was seeing the progression of the characters over a time span of years, which surprisingly didn’t make the pacing of the movie feel too fast. Personally, I thought by doing this it gave a better sense of attachment to the characters.

While Subaru and Doc oversee the enhancements made to GunPro-1, Kai, Nae, and Airi go to check out the strange machine that Kai discovered when he searched the ruined museum on the hill. Airi is able to access the machine’s interface and the group finds a device that resonates with Kai and upon operation causes him to experience a seizure (which allows him to access his slow-motion ability). When the group leaves the museum, they are confronted by Kimijima and AI Airi, who is apparently controlling some drones. Airi tries to talk to Kimijima and finds out that he isn’t the same person that she used to know. When the drones are sent to attack the group, they end up destroying themselves and Kimijima blames AI Airi for the failure and he tells her to ‘disappear’. As AI Airi begins to fade away, Airi has a brief talk with her about what the AI saw when she was sleeping, the AI replying that she saw snow before she fades from sight, causing Airi to feel like she lost a close friend.

After the enhancements to GunPro-1 are completed, and as Aki thanks everyone for their help, she is reunited with her father and learns of what happened to Kai, who is resting at the school’s infirmary. Later, as the group details the plan to stop the rocket launch, Kai appears and acknowledges the role he has to play in order for the plan to work, even if it risks his life in the process. Aki is unable to bear the thought of Kai hurting himself further and runs out of the briefing room. Nae goes to run after Aki but she stops where she receives some info about the timeframe of the upcoming rocket launch.

Kai finds Aki at the old clubroom. Though Kai tells Aki that he’s been looking out for her at Misa’s request, Aki tells Kai that she knows that Kai has been there for her despite acting the way he does. Later on at the old airfield, Kai confesses his feelings for Aki who is taken by surprise at the statement. As the pair share a kiss with the coming sunrise, the other Robotics Club members just happen to see the event take place, with Subaru and Kona reacting to the visual and playfully mocking each other about their supposed love interests.

The final preparations for (Super) GunPro-1 are complete and the ‘robot of justice’ is launched into action.

After Hakaze retrieves the letter and the note that were given to her in the past by Aika, a meeting is held where Mahiro and Yoshino learn about what happened to Aika. Both Mahiro and Yoshino come to terms with Aika decision in their own way and though Hakaze feels that part of the blame lies with her, the guys don’t really feel the same way, rather they feel that they too are responsible in some form. Though the mood in the room is somewhat subdued, Hanemura has an outburst and roughs up Mahiro and Yoshino and tells them that their non-emotional states after receiving the news is unreasonable. Despite the incident, both Mahiro and Yoshino acknowledge their restrained emotions (as does the others) and they remind Hanemura about the bigger picture concerning the Tree of Genesis and the role that Hanemura will play in the event regarding it’s destruction.

Later, Evangeline is holding a meeting about the appearance of the large tree trunk ‘pillar’ that has appeared and that a fleet of military forces/ships are guarding the vicinity; representatives of governments that have sided with protecting the Tree of Genesis. A plan of sorts is detailed: destroy the pillar and avoid/minimize casualties of the defending forces. That evening, while Mahiro and Yoshino are brainstorming about a course of action in regard to being ‘responsible’ for Aika’s actions and the events currently happening, a flashback is shown where the guys first meet Aika and everyone has their first impressions about each other. Though things start out a bit awkward, the event is (was) just the beginning for the course of events yet to come in each of their lives.

Spoiler

While Rei is reflecting on the purpose of her mission (to restore the world that she lost), she is visited by the Crow who punishes her for her past failures. Rei stands up to the Crow despite her suffering and makes it a point that she is necessary to the plan. As the topic of the Alone comes up, Rei decides to stake everything into the next encounter, even if it means using up all her remaining arrow to power up the Alone at the cost of disappearing from ‘this’ world.

Rei stops by Akane’s home to apologize for her actions the other day and Akane ends up inviting her to stay for dinner. The two girls bond after a ‘mayo explosion’ accident and a shared bath. At bedtime, both girls share their POVs on friendship, though Rei realizes that her time remaining is short. Though Akane heads out early the next morning for her deliveries, she is surprised to find out that Rei isn’t there when she returns back home.

With some help from Himawari, Dr. Isshiki is able to ascertain the outside interference that is powering up the Alone. The scientist also reveals that during the accident years ago, he was visited by an entity that questioned the ability for mankind to harness and utilize an energy that could tip the balance of power in the universe. The encounter also provided him with some intel regarding the appearance of the Alone, which apparently are a ‘test’ of sorts to mankind.

Rei arrives at the site where another Alone is scheduled to appear. The Vividteam launches into action, with Akane and Wakaba going off to fight the beast, while Aoi and Himawari track the outside interference. Rei manages to fire an arrow but she is discovered by some patrol sentries robotsbefore she can continue, causing her to flee and wonder how this sudden turn of events happened. Vividgreen is formed and takes out the powered up Alone and Rei arrives elsewhere just in time to see it being destroyed and though she is cornered by some sentry robots, Rei tries to break through them.

After the Alone is destroyed, Akane receives news on the interference and is asked to check it out. When Rei senses the presence of a Vividteam member (hidden by some smoke), she makes a move to fight it, but an inevitable encounter takes place between Rei… and Akane. Both girls are surprised at the sudden meeting and Rei quickly surmises that it’s all too convenient that things happened this way; Akane being friendly to her and such. Akane protests that she didn’t know, but Rei thinks otherwise and as she is restrained by some defense forces that show up, Rei calls Akane a liar.

I can’t help but feel that Satoru is going to die in the end either way. So what’s their plan now? For Saki and Satoru to act as decoys against the fiend while Kiroumarou attempts to kill the fiend himself?

Seriously?

Character deaths are always major bloody spoilers, that really is just common sense.

Lol at you guys trying to make sense with an OTTer.

Yo, Welcome to the Space Show is ridiculously good. It’s a feel-good movie like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but more epic.

SO good.

I wonder if it’s been localized/dubbed yet. I want a bluray.

Chihayafuru 2 - 10

Chihayafuru 2 10

Spoiler

While Arata wonders about his fate regarding playing in tomorrow’s individual tournament, a group of officials discuss the situation. One particular topic of discussion is about Suo, the current Master, who is apparently a radical of sorts regarding the image of Karuta. While some people argue that Arata should be disqualified, others say that Arata could/should be the face of Karuta instead of Suo. Shoji, the Fujioka West captain, barges into the room saying that it isn’t Arata’s fault and Arata enters to restrain and pull back his Fukui compatriot and apologizes for the intrusion.

Mizusawa is up against Yamaguchi Mioka, a prestigious school known for it’s academics and students that are usually accepted by Tokyo University after high school. Miyauchi engages the Mioka coach in some small talk but when he mentions that Karuta is only a tool to be used to enhance concentration and memorization and that the Mioka team is doing quite well against teams that play competitive Karuta, she hopes that Mizusawa will crush them despite her admiration for Mioka’s academics. The Mioka lineup/roster is interesting: five guys who seem to channel Komano (smart guy with glasses) and Taichi recognizes three of them as high school quiz show champions. However it is their tactics that cause a bit of confusion for Mizusawa: a somewhat standard row/column card placement with occasional shuffling during play. The match begins and Chihaya is flustered while playing her opponent, Nakayama (of Mioka), who makes full usage of memorization/concentration techniques as well as hearing/reacting stuffs when it comes to card taking, and every time Nakayama takes a card, he rearranges his card field, which confuses Chihaya even more. When Chihaya manages to take a card, she rushes off to collect it, but when she looks up at the side-window, a ‘sight’ of the current Queen, Shinobu, shocks the players and onlookers alike.

Shinobu has returned from the canceled Birdman Rally, albeit rain-soaked. Upon entering the facility entryway, Arata (who is present) sees Shinobu and goes to her, telling her that he might not be able to participate in tomorrow’s individual tournament due to his actions from earlier. The statement shocks/surprises Shinobu who makes a play to tell some nearby officials that if Arata doesn’t get to play, she’ll also not participate in the individual tournament and while both players offer a respectful bow, Shinobu expresses that she wants an opportunity to play Arata. Elsewhere, Sumire is wondering what to do about the rain when Komano arrives to meet her. Komano asks for the notes that Sumire took while the Akashi girls’ match went on and though Sumire says that she wasn’t able to get much information of their playing tactics, Komano is apparently pleased with the info that was gathered, mainly descriptions about the girl players. The mood quickly changes when Sumire says that she’s thankful for not being chosen to play, which ends up making things a bit awkward for Komano and Sumire.

The match between Mizusawa and Mioka continues. While Nakayama offers some insight (via his thoughts) on audio aspects of Karuta and quiz show stuffs, he notes that the other matches between the other members are quite close with Mizusawa edging out ahead. The remaining Mizusawa members, save Tsukuba, all seem to have a plan of action versus Mioka’s playing tactics: Nishida references his Suihoku Society training of playing defensively, which allows him to protect his cards while being able to take his opponent’s cards instead. Kana is able to recognize the individual poems that are read despite her opponent’s shuffle tactics. Taichi happens to also have an analytical mind like the Mioka players, but he also happens to have the physical ability to match. Chihaya continues to be flustered against Nakayama in regard to the shuffling tactics, but when she takes a moment to breathe and as the playing card field is reduced in number, she goes into ‘serious mode’ and is able to exercise her ability to the fullest, making Nakayama take notice of her ability (and beauty) as she makes quite a turnaround in the match.

Mizusawa takes the match 3-2, with Chihaya, Taichi, and Nishida winning their matches, though Kana was quite close only losing by 2 cards. When Mioka’s coach offers to console his team regarding their loss having no bearing on their academic stuffs, a tearful Nakayama says that the loss matters in regards to Karuta only, something that he is quite passionate about after his experience with it. Sometime after the match, all the Mizusawa members are reunited, with Komano and Sumire reporting in about their scouting expeditions and Sumire mentions something regarding Shinobu and Arata, confirming his appearance at the (team) tournament to both Chihaya and Taichi. Though Chihaya is excited at the thought of knowing that Arata is present, Taichi reprimands her saying that they need to focus on their own stuffs at the moment, but the thought of Arata being present continues to cause Taichi to worry about Chihaya and himself to some extent. Tsukuba says that he wants to be replaced by Komano in the next match, which a mindful Sumire chastises him about having the opportunity to play when he actually wanted to participate. Though Tsukuba says that the lineup should be changed for the more-experienced Komano, Nishida argues that Mizusawa should continue using their current lineup - sans Komano.

When Haruka and Manabe arrive at school, the duo learns that Hiyori has been arrested in regard to the newest incident. They go down to the police station and cause a ruckus and as Yuriko and Muroto reprimand the duo for acting hastily, Tsukino (the female detective) takes them in to see Hiyori. Though Hiyori is innocent, because Haruka knows who is actually responsible, Yama (the lead detective) says that the police can’t take her words at face value due to the non-acknowledgement of psychics/ESP, even though his thoughts are read by Haruka. Yuriko brings up the past incident with her mother, which Yama acknowledges before telling the gathered ESP Society members to go home, though Hiyori will remain in custody until she is cleared. While the group is walking home, Yuriko says that they should look for the culprit and Haruka agrees, but Manabe argues against the action, causing him and Haruka to have a disagreement before he leaves on his own.

The separation is apparent the next day as Manabe doesn’t show up to the ESP Society clubroom. When Haruka is walking home, she is approached by Tsukino and the two of them engage in some small talk regarding Haruka’s ability and her friends, something that Tsukino comments on. Hiyori is released the next day (much to the happiness of the Mori Dojo faction) and the ESP Society members, sans Manabe, work on gathering more information about where the culprit may strike next. Yuriko proposes to use herself as bait to draw out the culprit though it’s a risky plan and Tsukino calls Haruka telling her that a certain place might be the new target area. As the group goes to check things out, Haruka hears some thoughts made by the culprit regarding Yuriko’s presence, but in the process, the group loses sight of the ESP Society president. As Yuriko is walking down an alleyway, she hopes to use the experience of the scenario to make the existence of psychics/ESP aware to the world. Suddenly, the culprit approaches Yuriko from behind and strikes…

Welcome to the Space Show is an awesome movie. It’s just something really fun to watch and it’s surprisingly action packed for a movie targeted at children. As far as I know of it hasn’t been licensed yet so still gotta wait for that Blu-Ray. :frowning:

The team has a lot of catching up to do; and are getting a little bit stressed over it. Fortunately things have been progressing ever since Nitta managed to lead the team. Speaking of which, it looks like next week will finally have some character development regarding him.

I don’t get why some of you just summarize an episode in a spoiler tag and don’t even post your thoughts about it. lol
