Anime & Manga Thread v.5 FAQ/IRC: See OP. Welcome to 2017

Yeah it’s weird. Even though she’s a typical big doe eyed animu character, and her personality isn’t all that interesting, I still really like her. And yeah, all the police chicks are godlike. They screwed up having the boring lesbian in the main cast. They should of included that sharp eyed chick in the front row.

As for the actually episode…
I love listening to Makishima and that other guy talk. I could literally listen to an entire episode of them talking about anything. Honestly, if they told me to go kill a bunch of people for the cause I’d probably do it. Dudes are smooth talkers. My favorite protagonists in a long time.

watched the first episode of Shinsekai Yori, Bakuman will have to wait thank you fam. The animation in Shinsekai Yori is Outstanding!!! Now to see whats up with that shady sage academy lol.

I will be current by tommorrow lol.

It is? It doesn’t really jump out at me.

Animation in Shin Sekai Yori is pretty hit or miss. The budget is kind of low but isn’t bad for what it is.

Only thing that’s nice about the visuals in said show is that Saki is pretty, especially Adult Saki.
So yeah, pretty crazy episode. I don’t have much to add other than what has already been said, but the episode did implore me to go download episode 1 and watch the intro again. The intro scene of episode 1 takes place at the same tower Makishima and Akane’s group are going. The guy that attacks Kougami is wearing those lol purple leotards and the helmet. Kougami is beat up. No sign of Akane or Kagiri. Akane will probably survive but I don’t think things look good for Kagiri. Then again, Urobuchi might think we think he’ll kill off Kagiri, so he could throw us a big curveball and kill Akane before the series reaches its climax.

Who knows. Fucking Urobuchi is a clever bastard.[/spoiler[

I get the feeling Akane’s wearing plot armour so she won’t be killed off. In fact, while she still sits on the side lines, I get the feeling she will be important later on… likely at the very end of the climax. Such cliche storytelling ideals I have.

chihayafuru ep4, MY NIGGA TAICHI IN DA FUCKING BUILDIN SON!!!

Zetsuen no Tempest - 16

Spoiler

The Mage of Exodus makes a formal appearance with an event showcasing the destruction of a Tree of Genesis, with the public and media outlets looking on. It is Samon’s group that is participating in the event, with Natsumura and Tetsuma as ‘advents’ for the Mage of Exodus, Hanemura, who is in a body suit with all the works. Seems that there are more appearances planned for the Mage of Exodus, which worries Hanemura.

Hakaze and Yoshino go to the Kusaribe Village to investigate a rumor about the appearance of a spy. While there, they also learn about the rumor of a ghost that supposedly appears at night. Hakaze gives Yoshino a tour of the village and explains some things, but as she does, the ‘closeness’ of being with/near Yoshino makes her recall Junichirou’s warning of falling in love with Yoshino. A group consisting of Evangeline, Tetsuma, Natsumura, and Hanemura also return to the Kusaribe Village, where Samon has asked his men (along with Evangeline) to keep tabs on Hakaze and Yoshino, particularly Yoshino as Samon and a few others think that he is the real Mage of Exodus, instead of Hanemura.

That night, a girl from the village goes missing, and a search for the girl is conducted, which leads the Kusaribe villagers, along with Hakaze, Yoshino, and Samon’s group to a burning shrine with an unknown man seemingly holding the girl hostage. There is an underlying problem as in an effort to lure out the spy, magic can’t be used for a while, that and it’s usage would make the (hidden) village visible to the world. Yoshino moves into action, against Hakaze’s wishes, and goes to confront the man and rescue the girl. Meanwhile, Tetsuma and his group watches on from another location and observes Yoshino in action.

Yoshino manages to rescue the girl but ends up engaging the man in a scuffle while near the burning shrine. As the shrine crumbles down and the debris about to fall onto Yoshino, Hakaze invokes a spell and saves Yoshino (and the man) from harm, blowing them away from the affected area. Though the man flees, he soon is confronted and captured by Tetsuma and Natsumura, the former feeling convinced that Yoshino is more likely to be the Mage of Exodus, though he doesn’t have Hanemura’s power, Yoshino is able to influence Hakaze’s actions, as surmised by Samon. With the incident over and the village girl rescued, Hakaze is relieved that Yoshino is okay, but the Kusaribe princess realizes that she indeed has feelings for Yoshino, despite thinking otherwise.

As Samon’s group is surveying the burned ruins of the shrine, Evangeline is having a phone convo with Hayakawa about the events that have occurred and the aftermath. She also tells him about something found amidst the wreckage that may shed some light on why the Trees of Genesis/Exodus exist.

Spoiler

There are some lingering effects from the recent solar flare that causes the Iru-O system on the PokeCom to appear glitchy. A ‘side-effect’ of sorts concerns Airi, which may have affected her programming and has caused her to become ‘visible’ to other PokeCom users outside the ones who can already see her. Later, Kona tells Kai that a scheduled maintenance period to fix the Iru-O system problem could cause Airi to disappear, the event also pushing up the timetable to unlock/retrieve the remaining Kimijima Reports.

Kai works on unlocking Report #6, while Airi talks about a scenario relative to a life experience during the process. Report #6 is retrieved but it’s contents are somewhat confusing to really understand, as it talks about propaganda of subjects beyond Kai’s knowledge. When Airi mentions something regarding Kou Kimijima’s residence and a past memory, Kai goes to investigate and the search leads him to the long-abandoned Kimijima residence. As Airi seems to recall other memories, Kai makes his way into the basement area and unlocks a door to a room which holds a surprise within - a capsule containing a sleeping girl inside - That girl being the ‘original’ Airi.

The AI Airi explains that Airi suffered from a disease, which if it continued to progress would be painful to endure as it would limit her ability to function. Though Airi was often bedridden and alone, she longed to see the world that was beyond her reach. A meeting with Kou Kimijima would change Airi’s life as he made available the Iru-O system to bring the world to Airi, so to speak. Airi’s conditioned worsened and there were no treatments available at the time. Kimijima proposed that Airi be put into stasis and awakened in a future time when science had advanced enough to be able to cure it. Airi agrees to it and the AI Airi is created to ‘dream’ and see the world progress in the meantime.

Later, Kai ends up alerting the authorities to the real Airi’s situation. Prior to Christmas Eve, when the scheduled maintenance period is set to occur, Kai is spending some time with AI Airi who is recalling a memory of the real Airi - wishing for snow to fall. She worries about disappearing and asks Kai for a promise of a kiss if snow were to fall. Thanks to Kona, ‘snow’ begins to fall for Airi, when in actuality it isn’t really snowing and Kai obliges Airi with a kiss on the forehead, granting her wish and keeping a promise on Christmas Eve when Airi might disappear.

A few days later, the Robotics Club is overseeing the installation of the monopole engine that Doc had created. While Aki, Junna, Subaru, and Doc are involved with the process, Kai and Kona are off to the side, where Kai says that he hasn’t seen Airi for a while since the maintenance period was completed. Kona tells Kai to check again and Airi’s alter ego appears and says that she will be default AI, instead of Airi who apparently has disappeared.

Vividred Operation - 04

Spoiler

Akane, Aoi, and Wakaba visit Himawari at her home when her camera is damaged after an incident involving a baseball. They find out that the girl is a bit of a shut-in and is quite withdrawn, though smart and tech savvy. The trio, plus Himawari, go on an excursion to see part of the Manifestation Engine installation facility, but the moment is interrupted as an Alone that the trio had previously encountered returns and causes some havoc.

Himawari is surprised to see the girls transform and as Aoi and Wakaba go off to battle the Alone, Akane drops off Himawari at the facility, where the girl says she can stop an integral part of the installation’s system from being destroyed, and Akane promises to return to her later. Himawari is able to shut down the system but the building collapses and some rubble falls down, trapping her inside. As more rubble falls down, she has a flashback to a past event that had caused her to become withdrawn from others. Akane returns just in time to rescue Himawari and keep her promise of returning and the duo goes off to join up with Aoi and Wakaba who are still battling against the Alone.

The Alone is formidable and is giving both Aoi and Wakaba some trouble. Himawari wants to fight too and she ends up getting her own key and after she transforms, she is able to help out and deflect oncoming lasers from the Alone before they are able to reach Blue Island, where the Manifestation Engine is located. From afar, the mysterious girl fires an arrow that transforms the Alone into a more powerful form. Before Dr, Isshiki can propose a docking sequence, Himawari is the one who intialize it and appears to make sense of the Vivid system, the doctor realizing that the withdrawn girl is quite smart, considering her ‘hacking’ activities that have made her noticeable to Dr. Isshiki and others. Vividyellow makes short work of the Alone with a charged laser beam attack after another fabulous transformation sequence. Afterwards, Himawari is welcomed into the group and the girl even says that she’ll begin attending classes again with the other girls.

Looks at join date…Okay that explains the poor trolling. Maybe that works on gamefaqs or 4chan but over here we’ve had a lot of GDLK trolls over the years so our standards are higher. Step yo shit up son.

I finished NGE. As I’ve said before it’s really entertaining because it blends action, comedic moments, and mystery seamlessly. The action segments are kinetically exciting at face value but there’s always a good chunk of exposition devoted to showing why the action matters so when an angel and EVA do battle the personal stakes beyond saving the world are understood and a high level of suspense is born from that understanding. Usually action oriented shows feature the protagonist beating the bad guys via various deus ex machina so often that it’s become expected by everyone for the the hero to always triumph over evil no matter how powerfully portrayed that evil may be. In NGE I never felt that, the way social and political conflicts are played out before an angel arrives at the very least made me think it would be possible that whoever it fighting it will die, and for making me doubt in the face of cliche NGE gets a lot of credit.

No one will call NGE a comedy but it does have it’s fair share of really simple and effective funny moments. NGE sets up characters in a certain way and then juxtaposes typical awkward anime-esque situations between them which demonstrates how powerful a little humor can be in formal, sternly toned shows like this. Most of the time the emphasis is on the dour atmosphere and every word said is meant to be treated with the utmost seriousness, that makes everything air tight, it’s nice to let the air out a little and let both the characters and audience breathe with a little comedy.

Now we get to perhaps my favorite aspect of NGE, the central nagging questions which serve as the foundation to keep the audience tuning in week after week. Even from the first episode I could tell from it’s atmosphere that it’s not going to be a typical mecha anime, and although it starts out on a fairly straight forward arc, it progressively obfuscates the audience each episode by leaving a breadcrumb trail of questions. The basic premise of NGE is very easy to understand, but the more one thinks about it the more questions arise and I loved how NGE answers a few of them however, for every question answered 2 more pop up in it’s place and that’s the real genius behind NGE. NGE piques the curiosity of the audience, systemically satiating the desire for understanding, but only partially and then when the thirst for knowledge outgrows what the show is willing to fulfill, it pulls the rug out from under viewers effectively blueballing everyone.

After watching episode 26 I read about NGE on a few sites including wikipedia and fan reaction forums, apparently a lot of people are pissed off about the direction of episode 25 and 26. To an extent I can understand even sympathize with those people, because at face value the last 2 episodes seem very disjointed to the spirit of everything that came before them. However, anyone who thinks about it for just 5 minutes will understand the last 2 episodes as alienating as they may seem they are 100% thematically consistent with the rest of the show and act as a logical conclusion to the convictions NGE holds itself to. The final scene was brilliant and one of the best endings in anything I’ve ever seen, it’s so tragically ironic it would be perfectly at home in any Coen brothers film.

Ending

Spoiler

It is only after the entirety of humanity is forced to combine into a single entity that Shnji learns to break free of his personal demons that keep him from connecting with others. He gains the ability to enjoy companionship when it’s too late and there is literally no one left to be friends with. The congratulations scene is the feel bad ending of the century, the horror of what that scene personifies juxtaposed with it’s happy facade was perfectly creepy.

There is a 4th strength of NGE which doesn’t reveal itself until well into the series, but the depth of it’s character development is to be applauded. NGE accomplishes the contradiction that the very best of any creative work does which is celebrating the strengths of it’s medium and/or genre while also subverting them and turning expectations on their heads. The characters start out as typical anime cliches, not real people but cardboard cutouts each built to personify a feeling. Shinji the reluctant hero, Asuka the lone wolf, Rei the quiet one, and so on with the others, but it doesn’t stay that way for long the episodes progressively reveal more about everyone not being what they seem and having a lot more depth to them like real people do. This is not anything new, but the character development deconstructs the mecha genre with a bait and switch. A show that initially sells itself on the promise of mecha action slides further into introspective territory each episode by increasingly putting the focus on those who pilot and control and EVAs rather than the EVAs or even the angels themselves.

NGE is a much better show than Serial Experiments: Lain and clearly NGE is one of the influences of it. Think I’ll start Paranoia Agent next.

Okay, kid, first off, looking at my join date was…Cute.

Second off, sorry, no one should review NGE until they see it 3 times, because, you missed, like, everything.

You took the show at face value, and while that’s cool, it’s…Not right

How do you talk about NGE without existentialism? How do you not notice that all the heroes personalities without noting that all their personalities are swapped? Oedipus complex? Reverse Oedipus complex? Everyone’s own version of the hedgehog’s dilemina?
The child soldier angle? You also need to watch End of Evangelion because it is the series’ finale.

I could go into more shit, but that would take up way too large of a portion of this page, if you want it, I can pm it to you.

But, your interpretation of the ending is wrong, like, usually with an ending like that, you could take multiple opinions, and you can, but yours is one that is at face value, it’s kind of like trying to cheer up a friend that broke up with her boyfriend, but you never notice she has daddy issues.

The show does a great job of giving you all the answers to the need, but not want, like Rei and her clones, you know why they’re here, but, what do they think about being there, and unlike other shows, both questions are equally important, unlike the mystery of why they’re here, then the show telling you what they think about it and it should be taken as fact.

You can like NGE for it’s action and mystery, I think Anno would be sad, but you can, it’s open media, digest however you please.

That’s cool and all, everyone does that, I had to watch Lain a couple of times because I had strong misconceptions.

Paranoia agent is a much more fun series than both Lain and NGE, though.

Not trying to seem like a jerk, just saying “Try again, because the effort is totally worth it”.

reads lasts two posts

Evangelion is very deep. Video proof:

Deepest weed you’ll ever smoke.

The irony here is that you’re also one of these people. You’re putting up a front, scumbag.

Evangelion was deep when I was 12 and had barely started to read at a College level. Then I realized the only reason I even watched the show is because of “In other words” which from what I hear has 31 different versions attached to Evangelion ALONE. That’s crazy lol.

Edit: Now that I think about it I might show my girl this show so she can laugh at Shinji. What version should she be shown?

Sweet! We just had an old vs new anime debate, and now we get to revisit Evangelion. I am absolutely not sick of seeing this kinda stuff.

Glad to hear that pal, so why is Shinji the worst protagonist ever who set a trend for whiny faggotry abroad and made it plausible to cast grass eating bitch boys as the MC of every show ever?

I have no idea if you’re playing along with my sarcasm or you misread it… )=

Might have something to do with your public education.

Anyone else in this thread ever ask their girlfriend to turn around while the put their pants on, so you can see the fabric slide over their ass?

Why isn’t that a thing in anime, instead of poorly implemented breast physics?

I have never watched an anime with a girl.

Come to think of it, I have never watched anime with anyone, whenever it’s anime, it’s like night time and I want to invest myself.
