*Good anime that came out in the past 5 months? Psycho Pass and JoJo from last season. Shingeki no Kyojin and Aku no Hana for this season. I can’t really remember anything else I’d rec outside of those four.
If it helps, don’t think of Aku no Hana as anime, because it looks nothing like what we typically perceive anime as. When I watched the first episode I perceived it as an indie animation video. It’s a lot easier on the eyes since your expectations are that much lower.
It just looks bad, it wasn’t adapted well. There’s a certain creepy trait that the manga retains thanks to its art, and it only compliments the story. That’s lost entirely in the anime. It just looks wrong, like they’re not even trying.
So, Hataraku Maou Sama with the inclusion of Suzuka is teetering very closely on the 3rd girl threshold for harem anime…her feelings and motivations are still kind of unclear…but I think the scale has tipped in favor of romantic interest.
More interestingly, In contrast to the other harem shows of the season, Photokano and Date a Live, we see an evolution of the harem anime genre,
Photokano, is what I’m calling, the classic harem, or visual novel style harem. The girls are largely compartmentalized, they do not interact with each other for the most part, and the main character visits them one at a time There are more girls, compared to the other two, and each one fulfills some niche or sexual fetish. The sexualization, especially with the camera plot gimmick, is perhaps the most thinly veiled form of voyeuristic schoolgirl worship. Perhaps the most sexual in tone, the main character also displays the greatest degree of chastity. On some level he recognizes it, but, through sheer force of will, he rises above it. In terms of outcome, it seems the childhood friend is the most obvious victor, with the sporty girl and the quiet camera girl being tied for second. Of course, that is given any kind of resolution at all, typically, these types of shows omit a descision, as that is usually the choice of the player, and writing in romance with a certain girl as canon would no doubt upset fans. Could this be a marketing ploy to get people to buy the game (I assume there is a game)? Possibly. But it requires a bit of mental gymnastics to have a character choose one girl arbitrarily, when they all like him for arbitrary reasons, given his unremarkable nature.
In contrast the main character of Date a Live is at least somewhat remarkable, aside from possessing the strength of character to confront the spirits, he does possess some level of supernatural ability, as seen by his regeneration. Date A Live is what I call :“The Modern Harem”. It is seeks to distance itself from the classic harem by having some pretense of plot. Now, certainly, there must be someone in the world who watches it because they find the conflict interesting. realistically, everybody watches these for the characters. Now, the classic harem has a plot, but the plot is almost exclusively about the objects of affection. In Date a Live, the harem is more concentrated, with only a couple of fringe fetishes addressed by a couple of auxiliary characters. Rather than have a character who is immediately smitten or charmed by the main character, they are introduced in dramatic fashion, often at odds with one or another character, then by the end of the episode, all is resolved and they are informally inducted into the harem, often, for various contrived reasons, living in the main characters house. The original conflict is forgotten and from that point out it is hilarious hi-jinx. The sexualization of the various schoolgirls tends to be intermittent and highly concentrated. While in Photokano, there is almost always some lecherous subtext, Date a Live plays it off with a straight face. The one notable exception of the wholesale sexualization of the AST, the all girl combat unit that wears skimpy, low cut, midriff baring power armor. Typically the Modern Harem will be mostly innocuous, until there is a gratuitous bath scene or some kind of event where all the girls must dress up as maids. These will be equally contrived and improbable as the reason for the indoctrination to the harem, but given that the plot doesn’t ever hold up to any scrutiny, it slides.
Perhaps the best part of Hataraku Maou Sama, is that the plot does hold up to scrutiny…for the most part at least. It displays a kind of cleverness and agility of writing that most harem anime, too concerned with maximizing the amount of cuteness ever achieves. Maou Sama is a cute show however, the way it uses it is quite good. Rather than numbing the senses (which, I feel, is a totally legitimate strategy), it seeks to use service at key moments to disarm the viewer. Moe is used a scalpel rather than a hatchet. It took 6 episodes for the main components of the harem to assemble themselves. It could be argued that it isn’t a harem at all, but I think the auxiliary characters kept it close enough to the threshold for the label to stick. This is why I’m dubbing it “Neo Harem” as the consumer grows more wary to the same tropes and character archetypes, especially those they don’t have any kind of fetish for, it will be Neo Harem that delivers cuteness with laser guided precision to the hardened and cynical otaku. Not only does this make more with less, enriching, rather than cheapening the experience. It creates lasting memories, and it grants appeal to a greater audience. This is also due to of the three, it is by far the least sexualized, on closer inspection, the sexual fetishes they represent are blisteringly obvious (Large breasted school girl, tsundere OL, demure kimono girl), it becomes the job of the viewer, and the gray market amateur pornography industry to sexualize them. I think, given increasing political and economic pressures to expand the scope and perception of anime, is the way to go.
To have all of these types of harem anime in one season is a wonderful thing. Truly we live in the golden age of anime.
But…but…that is just the synopsis of my upcoming thesis “Changing Paradigms of Multi Agent Unilateral Affection Discourse in the Japanese Animation Industry Post 2005”
I guess I could just come up with an unrelated tier list
S+ Tier: Yuyushiki
A Tier: Maou Sama, Muromi
B Tier: Nyarlko, Gargantia, Titan, Yahari
C Tier: Oreimo, Date A Live, Rail Gun, Samurai GIrls
D Tier: Photokano
*Yeah the visual style isn’t for everyone and the rotoscoping definitely has it’s ups and downs but I think the visual style helps push the ugly, disoriented internal conflict that’s going on. The sound direction amplifies the characters thoughts, tension and mood that the characters experience. The characters themselves are independently intriguing and have multiple layers but the real joy of the series is watching how they all interact with society and one another. Though I admit the series is a bit of a slow with a pace that always walk and never runs and uses tacit implications and mood in place of action scenes, which makes it come off like a indie film. If you like shows like Texhnolyz, House of the Five Leaves or Boogiepop that are that are a lil slow, introspective, and cover exsistentialist themes then Aku no Hana is for you.
@MasterChibi: How far did you get in the series before dropping it? Because I haven’t read the manga but the anime adaption of the characters all come off exactly as you described them. The uncanon valley smiles and facial features are aggressive use of physiognomy that boosts how menacing, innocent, confident or anxious the characters either feel or how they appear to the audience or characters within the story. When you compare Nakas initial appearance of this compared to this you can see how much of her portrayal has changed based on context. I think a lot of people unfairely denigrate Aku no Hana anime without giving it a fair shake, I think those people should give it more of a chance before scoffing. *
I don’t read any of kromo’s posts. I just…scroll passed…all of them…
Anyways, It’s actually rather incredible seeing how little the art in Blade of the Immortal has changed over the decades. It started in 93 and ended last year, but the only difference in the art work is that the lines are darker and not as sketchy. I guess it’s not that crazy as the art was ridiculously good from the start, it really couldn’t get much better. Dude is easily one of my top 3 favorite JAP artists…a shame his other works are pretty much lite Guro and torture. -_-
