ahh ok, i was about to say i actually could only find baccano, morebito, and katanatagari… too bad about the LoGH. I don’t suppose there are grey market releases of that show with english subtitles either? i would be willing to import so long as the developers of the show were getting an approximate fair share of the purchase price.
because of my profession, its not appropriate for me to buy outright bootlegs or to torrent/pirate anything.
edit: does anyone have a strong opinion on Planetes or serial experiments LAIN? i’ve had these recommended to me before too and have not seen them yet.
Going out of your comfort zone can also help you discover more genres that you like. I didn’t expect much when I started watching Natsume, yet it became one of my favorite shows, despite being of a genre I never watched or even expected to like.
Mobile Suit Gundam is the original '79 show, and is IMO the best. It has seriously bad pacing issues since it was a serious show that had to be disguised as a kids show.
lol thats pretty extreme (2k per box set!). i was more referring to, if the show never got licensed in the US, but did get licensed in say, norway. and the norway release for some reason had english subtitles, i would be willing to import the norwegian release, because it is in fact an officially licensed product, they just weren’t anticipating an american buyer when they created the terms of the license. so it’s not piracy or theft as it is a properly licensed product. its just an import to a country not discussed in the original agreement.
of course some (maybe most) license agreements prohibit the exporting of the product. but thats a violation by the licensee in norway, im not breaking the contract by ordering it from them, as i am not privy to the agreement, nor am i a party to their contract.
Part of the reason for that price is that in Japan, hardcopy sales is how companies back almost all of their revenue, I think it’s about 70% or something. So that means DVDs there are sold for about $60 for 2 episodes. Nowadays, BDs are about $90 for 2 eps, and that is just the way it is. It’s fucked up, and eventually it will fall in on itself, but they’re so deep in it I don’t think any of them can think of a way around it. Someone has to do something incredibly drastic to fix it.
Yeah, well I guess that it’s illegal technically but that’s a freaking dumb ass law since I’m still paying for it officially, and frankly I don’t even care about a law like that.
honestly, pretty much NO ONE cares if you DL a niche show that will never, ever see the light of day here, but your choice of course.
well, actually its not illegal for the purchaser, only for the seller. thats one part of why its often called a “grey market” good. it causes some problems though when a license is given to say, cambodia, for pennies, and then the cambodian retailer starts selling it to say england, for dollars. the original licensor is now mad because they HAVE a license in england, and its for dollars, so they are getting less profit from each of the copies sold by the cambodian in england than they would if the cambodian had kept all their sales within cambodia.
but still, the buyer in england who imported, (ie the regular joe) has not broken any laws. unless the country he lives in specifically bans certain imports, but thats not usually the case (as far as i know. this is not actually my area of practice, so take all this with a big huge grain of salt)
at the end of the day though, im willing to important a good like that, because the publisher is still getting some money from my purchase, even if its not as much as if they had actually done a US license. in this case there is no US license, so i don’t really have a problem with it.
pirating/DLing though… its pretty blatantly illegal, even if its a stupid law, I am somewhat required and expected to obey it
I know that with Eden of the East part of what the director wanted to do was inspire NEETs to go out and do something with themselves, and supposedly it worked for some people at least. That shit is awesome.
I dunno, you could say that anime is just like any entertainment medium - you can either benefit from it (the degrees of benefits depends on the material and the ideas presented within it) or you could just simply be entertained by it.
