I would say there are two kinds of social programming in anime.
The first, and perhaps almost comical, is a notion of Japanese exceptionalism. Foreigners eagerly learn Japanese, aliens love Japanese culture, the most talented, gifted and beautiful students the world over flock to Japanese schools. Japan is the worlds economic, cultural and technological superpower. Being made in Japan, for Japanese people, it is not hard to see why there would be so much nationalism and ethnocentrism.
The second, is more insidious. What anime offers, is an unlimited variety of easy, hassle free, rejection free relationships. The deliberate use of stock characters extends these relationships. The use of masking, a technique where relatively undetailed faces are placed upon highly detailed bodies and backgrounds (IE, mouth is a line, nose is a line, but there are half a dozen buckles, frills and buttons on the school uniform) gives a sense realism, but also allows the consumer to mentally “draw in” the details, picturing the character as they see fit. Add to this a kind of hyper sexuality in the form of a parade of young, neubile well toned bodies, shapely breasts and an abundance of bath and beach episodes, and the stage is set for physical and emotional attraction.
It has been shown, that when people who love anime look at pictures of characters they like, their brains act in the same way a person looking at a picture of a loved one would. Biologically, the love otaku feel for their characters is the same that a normal person would feel for another human being. The brain either can’t, or won’t distinguish the two.
To add to this, there is a very prolific grey market “doujinshi” industry. While not exclusively pornographic, a very significant portion is dedicated to the depiction of sexual acts in an astonishing variety of fetishes. This is also in addition to canonical pornography, often in the form of an OVA (original video animation) or “dvd special”. Much like internet pornography, this means there are legions of people addicted to masturbation and the endless variety of sexual gratification videos.
So this means that anime offers people complete emotional and physical satisfaction, without having to leave the comfort of their homes. The mark of the true otaku is not a hatred of the outside world, but a complete loss of interest. The outside world simply does not offer the instant gratification that is so easily attainable.
While, perhaps not truly indicative of the population as a whole, Japanese shut ins or “hikikomori” are well documented. They represent the most extreme of cases, however, I feel the combination of the internet, anime and video games will likely drive more and more people into this life style. I suspect there will be a growing class of ‘soft shut ins’, individuals who are capable of supporting themselves financially, but choose not to have social lives, merely opting for a few, digital relationships and an endless slew of instant gratification.
