American Government Thread 2: RIP John McCain, 81

Messy, no proper respect for the dangers of fossil fuels, and with an inordinate propensity to get burned?

Moreso… You knew it was going to be a clusterfuck when the day came. It was going to be a long drawn out process. There were going to be tears and someone was probably going to die.

I am impressed with CNN today.

2 years ago it was Hilary is all but going to win… Odds of Trump winning are less than drawing into a straight flush… Blah Blah… This was even days before…

Today its a complete 180. They can’t go 2 minutes without making it clear ā€œits only pollsā€ and ā€œyou need to voteā€ā€¦

Happy they learned the ultimate lesson.

The ultimate lesson… They underestimated the stupidity of Americans.

They’re still fucking up pretty hard by chasing distractive drama as opposed to tracking policy or real issues.

It’s pretty brutal to do that these days, though, given that Trump finds the truth utterly irrelevant. Giving him airtime leads to the necessity of fact checking what you just aired, which is utter horseshit. Get the truth out, ignore the circus.

Random web tidbits:

I hear if the dems win they’re planning on spending all your money on aid to developing nations like Alabama and Mississippi

and more seriously:

(Bear in mind that in 2016, the national polls showing Hillary Clinton with a slight lead were accurate in the sense that she did win the popular vote by a slim margin, but the state polling in many key ā€œblue wallā€ states was what was off by sizable margins.)

^-- The last is I think important to bear in mind is because there’s still a deranged narrative about the 2016 election. It’s fucking voodoo, and we should realize that. The only thing that actually matters is results, which is people voting. Even polls have to factor in likely voters vs voters, for example. Trump’s emotional appeal to his core base was key to ensuring those people voted - and threw off the polls. He’s back around making emotional appeals - beware the caravan! lock her up! the media is the enemy! mobs not jobs! - so it’ll be interesting to see if that carries the day in red states.

He was trying to ENSURE he doesn’t lose senate and thats fine and likely.

Seriously Prep if the Dems fail to win the house I concede and will buy my MAGA hat first thing tomorrow because clearly the Dem Party would be all but dead.

Why? Because the Dems didn’t win at a fixed game? Much like when Kavanaugh was approved because the Republican Senate changed the rules for SCOTUS appointments… you might not win rigged games, but you still gotta fight unless you wanna be walked over.

I believe that everybody deserves a chance to succeed, and that the rich and corporations are probably already rich enough. I think we get a better country through investing in each other and the success of each other.

Those places where Blue does win I think are going to work on voter registration and gerrymandering. I think that by just leveling the playing field you help correct some of the horrible going on. It might be a long term process, but I think people slamming themselves against long polling lines each year is going to be pretty frustrating and lead voters to vote for people that actually want all the people to vote.

It was essentially 85% for GOP to keep Senate and to lose house if not even less. If the Dems fail to win with the same odds bro its over.

I said 2 years ago for Trump supporters to just join the Klan and get rank because thats what he will be about and I stand by that and if the Dems fail to win the house then just buy the fucking MAGA hat because our kind of people will be fucking dead homie.

I went to bed sick to my stomach 2 years ago and my worst thought is like 10% of what has happened and tonight if Trump doesn’t have any kind of check then I see no reason to care anymore. If 2 years of ENDLESS lies and ENDLESS divisiveness works for Trump then clearly we are a dying breed.

Delve into the results, tho. Blue is currently losing rural hard but destroying Republicans in urban areas. Young voters are at last check dominatingly blue. Those young voters are going to be more likely to vote as they grow up and realize that the government shapes the resources and world around them.

The system is messed up, but signs are that the tide is turning. Fox hosts being part of the campaign will be a nice reference point moving forward if anybody is confused in the future about what Fox is.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. This is yet another checkpoint.

You’re not a dying breed. The system is just currently broken. Maybe we all get to fix that.

We just lost all hope for the Senate with the IN loss… I hold out max hope for the house as I did before tonight.

We are not broken if we win the House. The odds for the GOP to win the house was like drawing into a sequential royal flush. If the GOP does that (even worse odds for Trump to win in 2016) then we are DEAD. Sure right now it looks great but pardon my lack of optimism given the last 700 days.

Cities are always going to vote democrat. If these young voters really cared about that kind of thing, they stay in whatever bumfuck states they come from and vote there either than moving to NYC and voting… Surprise… Democrat where it doesn’t really matter that they do.

What an odd thing to shame voters for

GOP officially clinch the Senate…

BETO please run for the President. Your losing Texas was ok as you might of allowed 4 House members to win…

I get Harris/Biden seem the easy choice but Beto is a perfect representation of the Democrats…
I would love Beto/Swalwell

Jesus Christ, think you might be acting just a tad bit hyperbolic?

Goddamn

Looks like the Dems take the House officially. Thank god for the removal of the 1 party rule…

Straight up the 2020 race will come down to 3-5 states PERIOD… Trump could still easily win 2020 given how tonight went down but this next 700 days will be fun and force Trump to work with Dems or fail worse than he has…

This isn’t a wave but man we gonna see some Trump Tax returns…

Beto O’Rourke and Andrew Gillum losing their respective races.

I should be surprised…but I’m not.

Andrew Gillum loses Fl gov race by 1% and Bill Nelson loses Senate seat to Lex Luthor aka Rick Scott.

I guess being a super Trump "stan"helped a lot. Truendymion should run for gov of Genosha.
Blechh.

The fact that a lot of these races were close is a pretty telling sign. Hopefully people keep the momentum going.
