American Government Thread 2: RIP John McCain, 81

Affirmative action is needed because there is a significant racial wealth gap, and wealth + status are often key factors in acceptance into Ivy League universities. The amount of legacy admissions to Harvard is about 6x more than non-legacy admissions. And who are those legacy admissions, mostly? Wealthy white people. Harvard itself has a tricky history with race, particularly when it comes to policing on campus.

How do Asians figure into your equation? Do you just lump them in with the caucasians?

BTW I tried to read that article but I almost puked when I read the word “microaggression”.

That’s pretty much exactly why I added the “notice” bit that people apparently are blithely glossing over, trying in advance to point out that this is one of the most fucked up areas of implementation trying to rectify serious societal problems. Appalachia, anyone? What happens with “over-representation” as is the literal case here? Damned good questions requiring tricky policy, and it’ll be interesting to see how the courts handle it.

The problems affirmative action was put in place to help with haven’t gone away. Can’t imagine they’re going to go away either without an impossible full societal reset. I’ve worked in admissions offices: trying to get the correct weight and balance of a person via … any metrics is just fucking impossible. They factor in, not use definitively, an interesting aspect of a person’s history. That doesn’t kill me.

As regards “doing its job by now” … how do we Complete the job? We’ve fucked up the war on terror and the war on drugs and most other bullshit. If this is making things better for the disadvantaged (what a tricky word to define), that seems interesting and reasonable to my non-judicious ass. Blum helped the courts decide that aspects of the Voting Rights Acts were just needless since It Had Done Its Job… and yet places like Georgia are loving to fuck up right now.

It’s been 50 years and the wealth gap has only grown worse. AA is more than a failure it’s actually making things worse.

They will still choose the white people over the asians

Like the logic of dropping affirmative action is sound.
But it will lead to more legacy students and more whites in general

Asians attend uc schools in big numbers because uc schools are performance based

So what? Why does it matter if more whites in ivy league schools? Whites make up the majority of the US population. It stands to reason there will be more whites.

The asians expecting more access to ivy league without affirmative action are in for a rude awakening

NYU, UCLA, USC, st john, ou

Lots of prestigious schools out there that do not discriminate on race and instead choose students based on test scores.

The thing is Harvard is some access to whiteness that those rich asians crave. And really the expectations for asians to get into ivy league are so fucked and skewed.

Affirmative Action and race quotas is how a guy like obama and david otunga eased into the school.

I don’t think they will be expecting anything because they aren’t entitled assholes

Something very Hitlerian about that phrase…

Asians coming from rich backgrounds who get pushed away for being too overachieving

I mean king of the hill lambasted this brilliantly

Chang couldn’t get into a program even though his dad was one of the elite in arlen.

Connie couldn’t get in until khan became unemployed and they were on welfare.

The poor asians would get into harvard because of the affirmative action

The rich asians would get rejected despite being more than qualified to attend

Without affirmative action, both will be rejected and well harvard will have higher acceptance rates due to now being able to accept average white people

Yes asians are entitled in this. They are fighting for more acceptance in the end it will backfire

Ivy league politics are huge bullshit

Rich asians are especially entitled and feel like they are owed more. Just like every kind of rich person.

As an asian. Who went to pharmacy school. And who ran into many rich asians

We are not stoic and subservient

The asians pushing for this are the rich entitled assholes.

Um okay. Yeah. You suck at discourse

But let me break it down.

The asians fighting to end affirmative action are actually hurting the prospects

But hey i am asian. So of course i must be hitler. Fucking peon.

White privelege is something many ethnicities strive for.

But i have decolonized myself so. American policies that effect asians

The politics about race i am sure to you is “stop crying white people are the best”

But any way to get a foot in the door. I have no problem with affirmative action within reason.

Think that has incredibly more to do with economic policy than AA.

Affirmative action has already survived a ton of legal challenges. Its efficacy might be open to debate, but I don’t think there’s much chance of now discovering some law that AA violates that no one had noticed yet.

There are a ton of next tier schools aren’t that difficult to get into AND feed students every bit as easily into whatever med school, T12 law school, or T15 business school. People complaining about not getting into an Ivy are all up in their feels over bruised egos.
