American Government Thread 2: RIP John McCain, 81

How do you discuss the points of someone so myopic that he doesn’t feel the need to read or know anything to have a valid opinion? Why should we?

I think once you have officially entered “proud non-reader” as a mission statement, you can officially not care about what they have to say regarding nuanced subjects

The important thing is Kanye is showing its ok to step away from tribalism. More people will be snapping out of the “reps are racist so just vote dem” lie and start holding Democrats accountable.

He stepped away from tribalism, to join another tribe. It sounds nice, but if that was the case, why move along that line; do something different. You can have a difference of opinion or want to go a different direction, but he’s not informed enough to really be consider this beacon of cognition. Just like Elon Musk, you can be a visionary and still say something stupid.

Why post up random “nothing can be true” hot takes from randoms? Why is that interesting?

I don’t know how Ford went back in time to take to her therapist. I don’t know why Kavanaugh is going to that guy’s house on about the day Ford indicated for “skis” on a weekday . There are instances of false accusations, and this particular accusation is an old concern: it’s possible that the truth may never be known. I for one think Ford seemed credible, I for one think that Kavanaugh seemed to dodge questions (‘how about you, Senator?’) and wasn’t honest. Kavanaugh’s calendar is the most fascinating thing: it aligns with everything she said (that I know of):

That being said, regardless of how this plays out, I don’t think that an angry guy ranting about liberal Cilnton revenge conspiracies belongs on a court. I do think he will be confirmed, but it’s a fucking shame because I think (hope?) that there are other way more qualified and suitable conservative candidates available. Sure, the GOP won the election: the seat is theirs. But filling it this way is ugly.

Posting a single woman saying that she doesn’t believe Ford does not mean it isn’t true. I’m sure there are more than just her, but this isn’t even anything thought provoking. This seems more like pointing the finger at the other side and screaming “YOU’RE GONNA GET OWNED”. Granted, doesn’t rule out the possibility of not telling the truth. Now that we are getting “due process” and folks are converting the narrative.

If Kavanaugh has nothing to hide, why not just do the investigation and call it a day. Flake’s even mentioned that the optics of the situation look better that way. Sure, it sucks, but it’s a lifetime appointment. We need to do this right and not rush it.

That’s the biggest issue. That statement that should easily deem one unfit for the position.

Kavanaugh’s rant is justified in the eyes of people who view this as witch hunt.

The justification or not of his rant is not relevant. He might be right as fuck and Ford is some time traveling master spy, but that’s not the kind of decorum expected of the court. He exposed crazy bias that I’d suggest is unbecoming and more to the point disqualifying. He had no need to do that: you can make your case without spouting liberal Clinton revenge conspiracy theories. If you can’t, how the fuck are you going to fill the shoes of even Anthony Kennedy?

Wait, you mean she voiced the same sentiments that Republicans have voiced? What is she, another GOP shill?

But yeah, she got rightly roasted for it, and she apologized for those comments two years ago:

I do think there is a substantive difference between calling an amoral liar an amoral liar and angrily insisting it’s a liberal Clinton revenge conspiracy to have a woman accusing you of sexual misconduct… but maybe that’s because I’m not woke enough. Let’s all just pretend that Gorsuch didn’t happen, shall we? The “liberal Clinton revenge conspiracy” requires time travel, and I for one want in on this.

Yeah yeah yeah and I think there’s a substantive distance between showing unprovoked animus towards a duly elected presidential nominee and calling out Democrats for stalling your nomination for the mid terms by destroying the lives of both yourself and your accuser.

But blah blah my reality is based on fact, you’re delusional… something.

You’re accidentally revising history: her comments were made before he was a duly elected presidential nominee. Doesn’t make it much better, tho.

I’m happy to agree that RBG’s behavior during the nomination process would have been disqualifying. She was rightly rebuked and rightly apologized. They were certainly less wild and conspiratorial than Kavanaugh’s comments.

Yeah, it’s totally the Democrats who are responsible for destroying the lives of Kavanaugh and Ford. It’s not whomever sexually assaulted Ford.

Gorsuch had no problems whatsoever in an much more contentious spot because he didn’t have substantial baggage. The Republican McConnell didn’t want Kavanaugh because of his substantial baggage. Damn those time-traveling Democrats.

Ford never wanted the allegations to go public. Feinstein sat on the allegations for weeks through the vetting process.

Maybe, like you suggested, the Republicans could have picked someone else. But that could’ve only happened if Feinstein had revealed the allegations earlier.

She didn’t, because the play was never to seek justice or truth for Ford, but to delay the nomination till midterms.

The situation being what it is today is 100% on Dems.

… then maybe the vetting process sucked? Let’s blame some D tho.

They already could/should have picked somebody else given Kavanaugh’s particular history. Previous to his testimony, I would have presumed he had an axe to grind against Democrats. Lo and behold…

Maybe that is the plan. If so, … I don’t care do u. Don’t nominate dubious people just because by changing the rules of the Senate you are able to ram whomever down people’s throat. I think Anita Hill’s article is spot on. I think the other SCOTUS justices who have spoken up about this process are spot on. Get some processes in place to handle this kind of thing. Improve your vetting.

The Republicans are racing to get this done. If Kavanaugh doesn’t get appointed, and I believe that he will be appointed, then this is an own goal by them having picked somebody they themselves had significant qualms about. Anybody bitching about Democrats maybe slowing this down for pretty substantive reasons can look up Garland and then sit back down. XD

It’s not just me though.

The SF Chronicle is hardly a right wing rag, and it places a lot blame firmly on Feinstein.

Some choice quotes:

"Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s treatment of a more than 3-decade-old sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was unfair all around. It was unfair to Kavanaugh, unfair to his accuser and unfair to Feinstein’s colleagues — Democrats and Republicans alike — on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Feinstein, a California Democrat, took the worst possible course by waiting until almost a week after Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing was completed"

"In concealing the accusation she had received in July, according to reports, Feinstein did a disservice to her Judiciary Committee colleagues, who might have wanted to determine if corroborating accounts were available, or at least question Kavanaugh about the accusation in a closed session.

Instead, Feinstein’s colleagues were left in the dark."

“The regrettable outcome here is that the Senate Judiciary Committee never had a chance to contemplate those difficult questions or consider the merits of this accusation while they were holding hearings on the nomination.”

“Cry me a fucking river.” -Merrick Garland

This is highly ironic since the only thing I ever see you do around here is cry about Merrick Garland.

There is also a difference between denying someone by simply not taking a vote (something that Republicans were in a position to do because “elections have consequences”) and destroying two people in public in an attempt to delay a vote.

I’ll leave it to you to decide what’s politics as usual and what’s scummy.
