Because incidents like those are legitimately random as all fuck. I’ve never had an issue in this state and I’ve driven a good chunk of it. Only person to do racist shit against me have been Mexican cops so, take that as you will.
My experience is similar to yours however I’ve never lived in the country. Some years ago, I was considering working for a certain dutch oil company in Port Arthur, TX and some other back water place in Louisiana. One was Asian and he said he had a hard time even just getting an oil change. The other was, to my surprise, WHITE and he still got a hard time for several months then they let up.
Maybe it’s one of those things where you only hear about the egregious things and so it makes you think the whole picture is bad rather than one isolated incident.
Being born from texas I kinda wish that was some other place with news like that. That is stupid of that man regardless of his wherabouts.
It’s not a hate crime tho I think they kill eachother much worse than that.
Stand Your Ground is completely unnecessary. There are already laws against assault, battery, murder etc. SYG is designed specifically to punish minorities.
Don’t understand why they’re citing it as racism, Islam is an ideology not a race. What is so hard about making this distinction?
Even if it was “racist” (which it really wasn’t), It was still his right for voicing his opinion. I don’t care how backwards and misguided a slur can be, it’s still a basic right to voice it. The line gets drawn when you attempt to silence one’s voice by force the way Abu did. It was his fault for being offended and was his fault for resorting to force.
Was shooting him justified? Wouldn’t know really, but can cite that in an adrenaline fueled situation like that you can’t afford to take chances. Take time to talk to anyone with a military or law-enforcement background. If the shooter was pre-military then chances are he wanted to be safe to rule out the possibility of being attacked by a knife. The reality is that you wouldn’t even know that you’re being stabbed until it’s too late and that getting assaulted with a knife is almost impossible to see coming. Every ex military man, police man, or anyone that understands what real self defense entails knows this and that it’s better not to take chances. Abu wasn’t holding a knife obviously, but how would you know if you’re defending yourself in an adrenaline-fueled situation? I hope that this also clears up why it doesn’t take much to make an officer edgy/trigger-happy.
White dude provoked the Muslim. He has no defense against using lethal force on an unarmed assailant in this case. This is why the DA is now pursuing murder charges, even though a grand jury didn’t indict him.
