Alpha 3: Q & A

What’s f.MP?

Frankly, it’s been a several years since I’ve seen anyone fall for/succesfully do ticks (like LK -> SPD) in any SF game. Might be good against the CPU…

In Z3, it kinda works against humans, but not by itself. You mix up attacks, like a couple of consecutive Body Splashes, a jab here, a light kick there, maybe another Splash, then sudenly do the tick. Or do a Splash, jab, pause, jab a bit more, Splash again, jab into tick immediately. Or Splash, jabX3, SPD, etc. The trick is to make you opponent not reflexively jump whenever he sees the light kick come out. Make him think twice about jumping automatically. This works well in Z3 (and SFEX1) because the Splash isn’t to vulnerable to anti-air and your opponent can’t spend all day air-blocking the Spalsh (guard meter). Once you got that down you can even mix in Z-ism Aerial Russian Slam. Splash, jab, pause, ARS as he tries to jump. Also, try to learn Spash -> Jab -> clothesline (or Splash->VC) to the point that you do it automatically whenever a cross-up Splash connects – it doesn’t hurt to learn a combo.

Jumping into max range whilfe whiffing an attack then SPD on landing is something I will always try do do at least once a match, though.

On Gen and Gief: Personally, this is a match I hate, especially if the Gen player know the waterfall kick by heart. Gen’s range is quite long so it’s hard to play footsie (plus Gen can really punish badly whiffed moves), and jumping on him isn’t much of an option. I usually try to go for a V-ism drop-through, but it’s hard to time against Gen’s waterfall kick.

f.MP = forward MP (Zangief does a small jump forward in Z-ISM).

From what I am reading, he is also a very simple character to learn like Dhalsim. It is just a matter of knowing how to mess up your opponent mind.

Can/do good Zangief players do any 360 grab in tournements from a neutral state (no punch/kick/jumping before)?

Yes they can, and yes they do.

I think I saw somewhere someone doing a neutral start 720 move…but that might have been 3S…

and if you want good zangief videos go to the goforbroke hub at direct connect or www.beat-tribe.com - they update the videos sometimes as well and gief is popular choice. The dhalsim vs Gief match is an example of how to play dhalsim well - the guy is insane.

Any player who is slightly above mediocre should be able to do a standing 360. It is not hard AT ALL.

the Gief player over here stresses being able to do the SPD on command, like tapping out a normal almost. enemy within range: SPD. Ryu lands from a tatsumaki you just ducked: SPD. actually standing SPDs may not be so tough but crouching SPDs give me a problem. i can only SPD clockwise too, but supposedly learning both ways is a must.

random mixups;

  • splash, c.JP, c.JP xx K.lariat, JP.SPD. the K lariat would be unsweepable.
  • j.FP/splash, c.JP, c.JP, c.SK xx JP.banishing flat. the flat smacks people who react to JPs by jumping, and if they don’t jump they’re still in “that range”.

i don’t think Z-Gief doesn’t have the ground-based headbutt btw.

Alpha 3 AI

Anyone notice how some of the AI patterns in A3 are the same as the ST patterns? And notice how on expert lvl arcade they do wakeup super if your point blank and try a jab 90% of the time?

Also I think the Japanese Arcade version has a better AI than the US version but maybe I was just having a bad day. These are all playing the characters at Expert lvl on Arcade, its much tougher then lvl 8 on PSX.

Sagat: Get close, wait for tiger uppercut then combo.

Zangief: Jump-up FK or RK beats 90% of his moves, sometimes even air grab, long pokes work OK too, but sometimes Gief can time a jump-in through them due to the changing size of his hitbox during some moves in the air.

R.Mika: Just wait still she gets close, then use crouching SP or FK (whichever snuffs better) Otherwise she beats the crap outta you at expert level.

Dan: Poke to death in corner or wait for gale kick then combo.

Ryu: Jump over fireball then combo.

Ken: wait for him to jump then anti-air, or wait for Dragon Punch then combo.

Rose: Usually Jump forward and use a high priority air attack works well. Shes nuts on the ground.

Bison(Vega): after he goes for the stomp meet him in the air with a high priority air attack, when he crouches for more than 1 second he’s going to do a fireball, jump over and combo. If he does a stomp into a dive that doesnt hit, and he has meter, he is going for the super when he lands. Don’t jump unless he’s already in the air. Sometimes he supers on wakeup if you poke, and catches you even if it was a jab!?

Vega(Balrog): Block until he starts getting close with the slides, then combo.

Birdie: poke at long range or fireball, or just keepway till he tries the dash headbutt, then counter or super it.

Akuma: He’s tough sometimes, but just poke and jump-in and dont let him get inside sweep distance of you and you should be OK. He does wakeup ShunGokuSatsu on reaction to a jab. So dont go near him when hes knocked down.

Sakura: Block her cr. SP, Hurricane Kick pattern then combo. If you try to outpoke her on the ground, she usually retaliates with standing FP’s cancelled into themselves, so just wait for her to attack then get her on the recovery. Don’t poke her on wakeup.

Charlie: Sometimes an empty jump-in will work, because Charlie will try a Somersault but sometimes he’ll use a normal, otherwise he’s pretty good at expert lvl.

Chun-Li, Cammy: I haven’t really seen any holes in their patterns on expert lvl, you just have to outplay them most of the time, but I still cant’ beat Chun-Li most of the time with my Cody, and I can’t beat RL players with my Cody either unless I guess to super at the right time 100% of the time, so I think Chun-Li beats Cody for free, unless your in Vism in which case you have a shot. Stay close to Cammy and poke alot, otherwise she starts using the hooligan roll alot, sometimes as your getting up from knockdown.

Karin: Pretty easy most of the time, just wait for Rekka Ken attacks then combo.

Dhalsim: Just corner him and you should be able to make short work of him.

Blanka: he’s easy to trap in the corner, there you should be able to outpoke him, dont let him get too close though, otherwise he’ll throw, for 50%

Adon: Corner him, then poke alot at close range, he’s got too much mobility mid-screen.

Cody: Attack low

Honda: He’s a monster up close, just try to pelt him for projectiles if you’ve got them, or long range pokes.

Guy: Don’t Jump, poke at long range with standing poke on moves with startup, like the dash kick. dont let him get close or he’ll do the 60% repeated knee throw.

Any others I forgot???

There’s some good A3 shit filmed that will be on the ECC8 DVD… here’s part of my ECC log cause I’m too lazy to repeat it. I’m sure LCP will ask the new york crew for more match commentary.

"

Here’s my little ECC log.

Friday :

It ended up being me, alex, will, and my sister going to ECC, but my sister wanted to go visit a friend in new york so we had to go drop her in queens for the weekend. We then arrived at the arcade around 10pm, I played some A3 and was mad rusty… losing alot of matches, even with sakura. Me and Arturo decided to do our 4/7 for 20$, we put the 40$ on the machine and started playing… it attracted a huge crowd and LCP filmed it (it will be on the DVD). He started off with Dhalsim, I beat him, then he took sakura, I lost, I switched sides (to the left side), then I won. Then he took sakura again, I won. I was leading 3-1 at this point. He then switched to V-Vega and I lost 3 in a row, it was down to the last round, last second, but oh well… it was worth it. I did commentary about this match which will later be on the DVD, LCP said it was really good.

Anyway we went back to the hotel. It was me, alex, will, nibor&chris from LCP, Kam, JS Master, and Ian from Toronto.

Saturday :

I won 2 matches in 3s… I think I finished 13th. I challenged Jason Cole in Alpha 3… for me this was the most important part of the weekend… I’ve been trying to play a match set against Cole for 3 years. He’s a really cool guy btw… Anyway, we started with a 4/7 for 10$. I picked Dan and he took Sakura, I won 2 matches with Dan then I barely lost against Sakura, it was 2-1 at this point for me and I really showed off the real Dan that was worth being filmed. I then switched to Sak, beat his Sakura, then he took X-Balrog… beat him, so I won the set 4-1. I asked him if he wanted a rematch, he said ok, but 3/5.

This time I started with Sak, he took X-Balrog again, I beat him… I found a good trick against Balrog which I’m sure everyone will x-copy to beat Balrog players like Apoc… anyway he then swithed to A-Dhalsim, his main character which made him qualify for the 5 on 5 USA vs. Japan in evolution. I beat him once, then he beat me, then I beat him… ended up being 3-1 and that’s it it was over. This will all be on the DVD as well. For me just the 2 sets vs. Arturo and Cole was enough for the weekend, the tourney was bonus.

I’m glad I said that, cause the tourney was pretty shitty… Nibor is really good, he was beating me like 80% of the time on saturday… but he ended up burning out for sunday. I played Arturo again, I did much better, beating his vega first match… but he out poked and ran away too much I got impatient and lost the rest. Ricky let Justin win so justin was in the winners finals without beating anyone good. I played Cole and beat him 2-0, Played Nibor beat him 2-0… lost to Ricky 2-0 (he’s just too good in SF games in general). in the end it was shitty cause it was a 3-way tie… and Justin placed 3rd without ever playing me… oh well.
I wasn’t really pissed off cause I’m kinda not playing SF seriously as much as before… I don’t really have anything to prove anymore, from now on I just play for fun… no more practicing to be the best.

Alpha 3 AI

A3 AI one of the easiest ever I think. ST and Alpha 1 where hard.

Dhalsim can special teleport after guy’s lvl3 super. :frowning: ??? Is he allowed to do that. Damn him!!

I have a question i dont know if this has already benn posted. Ok while im playing v-akuma. I go to start his VC1 activate jab DP-> fierce FB-> demon flip->FierceFB repeat. My question is when they get to the corner i do FB and whiff s.fierce. Why is it when i get to the corner i miss the combo completely in the corner.

I asked a very similar question about a week ago… when you get to the corner are you saying that you whiff the fireball and then go for the s .fierce? If so, when you go for the s.fierce, is you’re opponent landing behind you? Because this is exactly what was happening to me and someone told me the the reason was because I was going too deep into the corner… you have to judge the distance from where you are, to the corner and do the appropriate demon flip (weak, strong or fierce)… I hope this helps

I have a question also… can someone please tell me how to crouch cancel? Like when you get an air counter hit, you land and crouch cancel and then jump up to your opponent and hit them again… but, I don’t know how to crouch cancel… can someone please help me out?

Hit down when you land, and then jump again. that’s literally all there is to it. you just have to learn the timing…different sticks than usual can screw you up a little, but it’s basically always the same.

  1. Can somebody explain why V-Sodom owns Gief’s ass?

  2. How does Balrog cope against that big hairy Russian? IN general obviously.

eh i thought i explained this already.

sodom owns gief for free with b+fierce alone. well lemme rephrase, V-Sodom owns gief since you can only get B+fierce on command with V. great priority and range, hits gief mid so he cant crouch it. and he cant jump in on you against b+fierce if you are spaced right. if he is close and jumps, use c+fierce or slide. keep him zoned, amazingly hard fight. all there really is to it

Why is it when I tried doing Sodom’s VC, this way…Activate, c.Short, c.Forward, Fierce scrape, it didn’t combo? =\

It’s probably because God hates you.

I never use that VC (mainly because I don’t play Sodom), but just doing a crouching Forward into the FP scrape sounds more reliable.

LMAO:lol:
hmm just for kick does anyone have any good dee jay or t hawk vc combos? im bored and guile is gust bleh to try and use.

I haven’t messed around with them in a while, but the old Dee Jay VC I used to use was VC3, crouching JP, {SK rising kick thing, standing fp}x8 or so, used mainly as anti-air, because it will whiff vs crouchers. Timing is weird, but it does like 50%. You may have to swtich to crouching Fierces, since it’s usually easier with those, and it will keep them towards the middle of the stage. All of the rising kick things after the first one whiff.

T.Hawk VC was like VC3, and just do the DP move over and over, but I can’t remember which strengths you used, and when. Did nice damage though.

Old Guile midscreen I used was basically the same as the Dee Jay one…VC3, c.JP, {SK flash kick, standing fp}…I think that’s how it goes… The standing FP hits twice, because the shadow of the previous FP will hit… does nice damage too.

Karin and Sakura

My current two fav’s. I just got Alpha 3 after a friend got me hooked on the bloody thing. And I said I wouldn’t play Sakura but the more I play her the more fun she is. But shes got stackloads of strats and VC’s and stuff. Go top tier chars!

Karin -
Whats her reliable damage VC’s and whats her throw pickups from the VC. Also whenever I do a VC I go too deep into a corner and end up whiffing the damn hit cause it goes “off screen” I get the funny feeling I need a nice list of good VC’s to use and abuse. Can anyone help me out here?

Karin and Sakura

Which VC is this, and could you give a more detailed description?
