Hey, LB makes a good point. Asians could enter an “Asians only” tournament and still enter an “open” tournament :D.
/agree
LB IS SOOOO DOPE
I’m all for the buying 40s and sidebetting. Let’s make this happen!
Oh, shit, I’mma’ get wrecked.
Also, girls don’t play Street Fighter because it’s not relevant to their interests. I’m actually working on an arcade prototype that blends the gameplay of Street Fighter with things girls actually CARE about. It’s called Baking Battle, and it’s a contest of which girl bakes the best. You can create your own characters, and your character’s attributes change depending on how well she fills out her apron and how little she has on underneath it.
LB are you serious right now? Men’s and women’s basketball (for example) is segregated because it’s a sport (you actually didn’t give any examples that werent sports). Women’s basketball isn’t something you can compare to mens basketball since men and women have different natural physical traits that make it hard to compare in competition. There aren’t physiologic or psychologic challenges or handicaps keeping a girl from being the best in the world at video games. It’s not like our boobs keep us from reaching the stick or something. My point: sports are physical, that’s why they’re segregated; video games are not physical at all (except for a few rhythm games like DDR).
Generally speaking, you know who hates losing more than women? Um… men. The difference is girls show it, guys don’t (for the most part). To get good at a game you have to hate to lose more than anything and not want it to ever happen again. I don’t care if I lose at Tekken, so I don’t try super hard to get better and win the next tournament or anything like that. A lot of guys do, that’s their motivation and that’s why there are so many top tier male players and virtually zero top-tier female players. That and the fact that just more guys play in general.
Because if you get “wins under your belt” from those tournaments, you’re only winning a tournament comprised of a small amount of players, most of which have a lot less experience. JT holds scrub Tekken tournies at SVGL. I got 4th at the first one, but even if I placed, I’d still understand it’s not a real win because all the players with actual skill were barred from entering. I just did well against a small demographic.
I’m not trying to discredit female players by saying these things. There are a lot of girls who are really good and can scrape guys for days. I’m just saying even getting first place at a female-only tournament isn’t really an achievement to be super proud of. It doesn’t rank you out of all the players, it just ranks you out of a select few. If you pride yourself too much on being the best female at a game, you wont become anything more than that. People need to look at the big picture if they’re serious about a game, not just girl competition, that’s the most retarded shit under the sun. IMO.
It’s bad because it’s sexist. There I said it. I know girls aren’t banned from normal competitions and I know nobody is saying “girls are all scrubs”, etc. I’m just insulted whenever people are surprised I play games, or when people discredit my skill because I’m a girl, or when I’m compared to other girls (both in looks and skill -___-). I’m aware there are at least a few girls who would be interested in entering this for whatever reasons they have. I’m also aware this side tournament is going to happen regardless of how many people hate it or support it. This is just my opinion, and I think it should hold at least a little weight here since I’m one of the few girls in NorCal who plays shit and posts here and is going to NCR.
If you guys are really aching so badly to see girls play fighting games and/or become pro, encourage girls to enter tournaments as normal and please support them when they do. Don’t make a fucking show out of it.
PS: All love for you LB. I’m just a hater when it comes to this stuff and I’ve never said anything about it. A lot of guys agree with you on this one I think; I just disagree. I do happen to agree with 40s and you guys getting wasted and climbing stuff like you do when you’re shit-faced though.
edit i went off topic
Anyway, it’d be nice to see a serious female SFIV player dominating in regular tourneys. I wouldn’t be surprised because anything can happen…for example…A guile winning a tournament OMGZ! low tier wtfimpossible.
I’m also wondering what ways are there to encourage females to join tourneys? Would training sessions help? Whereas everyone is open to help out in improving one another’s gameplay and execution, and giving feedbacks before/after match. Based on my experience in general, the game becomes much more addictive the better you get in the game, especially when you’re fighting a high level player you’d never expect to be at equal standings with.
But still gotta note that this is for the ones who are serious about learning and getting better at the game.
ppl just dont know, i seen the mightiest of men toppled by a female rufus player in japan. Wheres your misogynist god now LB!??
video games require a lot of hand-to-eye coordination, and spacing. i’m not trying to be mean, but girls were not built to do well with 3d spatial representations (research confirmed) and it is primary culprit of why girls can’t park. it’s not they suck at it because they are less skilled or because they can’t learn, but it’s simply because that’s not their strength. again, i’m not trying to sound sexist so please don’t take it the wrong way. i may joke around a lot but i don’t honestly try to offend anyone.
there are many non-segregated activites that do not have tons of female support. rubik’s cube competitions? not segregated. are there girls? no. chess compeitions? not segregated. are there girls? no. i can’t really think of other competitive activity that’s not physical that doesn’t have segregation, but it just means there’s no need for it because there aren’t enough girl-base in the first place.
what? guys hella show. i hate losing, but you know what i hate more? losing and not knowing why. do you know when you lose and you don’t know why? when you suck. if you know the matchup, if you know the game, if you know what to do and simply fucked up or guessed wrong, you know exactly why and you can improve. people get pissed off when they don’t know what to do, gets hit by the same thing every time, or something similiar.
my motivation is to have fun, and that’s it. this actually has nothing to do with men in general, or why there aren’t top tier female players. men don’t play games or they strive to win tournaments because they don’t want to lose. games are just a part of us like washing dishes and laundry is for women.
anyways, as you said, you don’t care if you lose or not. however, would you care if you won or not? if you honestly had a chance to win a tournament and it only took you slightly more time than how much you already spend, don’t you think you’d be motivated? maybe, maybe not. at least we are trying something different… what have girls done to make the tournament scene better for guys???
i wish there were more tournaments like that. playing people of similiar or slightly better skill level is the best way to improve (unless you have hella talent, but i’m not one of them) and unfortunately, a “real” tournament setting is a complete crapshoot as to who you play and what level is their competitive knowledge. what is wrong with a scrub tekken tournament? is it degrading for scrubs? we know we are scrubs and it’s ok.
why can’t you hold the same standards for a women’s tourney? sounds hypocritical to me.
i never said winning the all-girl tourney gives you a shiny medal or a trophy. it really is to get more people (girls in this case) and have them play without being intimidated by all the pro players (or men for some girls) and have fun.
i agree that if you strive solely to be the best female player, you are limiting yourself. i understand that; but i also wrote that you are free to enter “real” tournaments all the time. if you are naive enough to pride yourself as the best female tournament player, then that’s your fault, not the fault of the tournament organizers… right?
hey, i pride myself as the best bryan with 30% winrate at svgl… but i also know where i stand in the community. give girls more credit… or maybe i’m giving them way too much
i don’t think it’s sexist, but that’s my own personal opinion. you think it’s sexist, and i merely wrote my side of the story to convey you otherwise. i think it would be sexist if girls were not allowed to enter “real” tournaments, but that is not the case. and don’t you girls always wish you guys were treated special anyways?
i’ve personally never made a show when girls enter tournaments. i’ve even played against a few in my life and i’m 100% for anyone and everyone to enjoy what the competitive scene has to offer. it’s a lot more friendly and robust than gaming-geek stank-ass sausage fest that a lot of people think it is. again, this is an attempt at encouraging them. if you won’t enter because you think it’s sexist, and also 50+% of other girls won’t enter because it’s sexist, obviously this idea will be scraped.
we really really are not doing this so we can go stalk girl video game players… even though i know black rob is going to town on that shit.
nono i don’t think disagreeing on something means you hate them. debate is something healthy and i think everyone with a logical opinion should definitely speak up and say something. if you brought up ridiculous claims, nobody would have responded anyways. <3 x infinity - 1000.
but yeah, seriously, take a step back and don’t try to get offended at the initial shock of it. behind all the negativity you see, there are good intentions.
What i think LB is trying to say is that girls are only good at making babies
shame on you LB
I didn’t know Cooking Mama was played on a competitive level :razzy:
they are so good at making babies. oh god they are so good.
Something men will never compete against …!
That requires 3D depth perception. So much like parking, you need to tell the female to switch positions, sit back, relax and let the man do the driving.
wish i had my people like LB in my classes, he would make everyone sound smart every time he spoke
marcels lamest post ever.
takes one to know one :smokin:
Males and females have a lot of minor differences in strengths. Those are averages though, and also they’re very minor differences. If you really think that because women on average don’t have their spacial perception as finely tuned as men, there is a significant number of more male players playing video games than women, you need to do more research. Also, video games are 2d… unless you’re playing Wii shit, then you’re just a pussy. I think the reasons for girls not playing video games (fighting games especially) has a lot more to do with general hobbies and social issues rather than biological strengths/weaknesses. And sports are a whole other issue because the differences in natural physical strength between men and women are huge and would affect competition a lot in some sports (like football or rugby). I’m really skeptical when you say there is a big enough difference in physical/mental strengths that justifies segregation in video game tournaments.
Yeah or they’re not segregated because they don’t need to be, even if men and women were 50:50. And for the record I’ve never entered a tournament cuz I suck, but I’ve solved Rubik’s under a minute plenty of times. u__u
Whether you get pissed or not depends on your personality type. I’m just saying when I lose I don’t CARE so I don’t think about those things (for the most part). I’m not gonna lie, after I get up and walk away I don’t really think about what happened in the match. When Rom loses he cares, and he thinks about what he did that made him lose and learns from it, that’s why he’s good now.
I think frustrated is the word, when you don’t know wtf you did wrong. But people go ape-shit and throw sticks at tournaments when they fuck up and I’m pretty sure they know exactly what they did wrong. The more butt-hurt you are the more incentive you have to improve.
Not losing = winning, not winning = losing… I don’t understand your question. And when has anyone ever had to put in “slightly” more time to be good enough to win a whole tournament. Never. It takes a LOT of work from day 1 and a lot of people (girls included) aren’t up for that. Trying to improve your skill at a game and trying to get 1st in a tournament are different things.
And girls improving the tournament scene? Okay I haven’t run any tournaments or donated a shit ton of money, but I’ve done a lot to support my friends playing. Especially Rom. And how do you know running a tournament like that will improve the tournament scene for girls? As far as I know it’s been guys suggesting these kinds of tournaments 100% of the time.
For a lot of sports there are amateur tournaments available because the skill range is so large. Some people think they’re a joke but whatever. The tournaments are seperate because of skill gaps. Female tournaments are seperated because horndogs are interested in watching girl battles, at least that’s the only reason I can think of… doesn’t make sense to me.
I mean any girl who is interested in entering this tournament I’d really like to know what it is that makes a female only tournament sound more appealing than just entering a normal tourney.
Also… I think maybe I came off sounding more offended than I am. I just think having a seperate girls-only tournament is the dumbest idea ever. I don’t understand what purpose segregation has in games and why that would help anybody. And I’m disappointed that you guys don’t see how this can be a little offensive to girls/women. I mean if this tournament happens I’m not going to cross my fingers for it to fail. I just hope it lives up to the positive edge you guys are giving it and truly does encourage more girls to play either for fun or for competition. To be honest, though, I have very little faith it will.
This thread’s gettin too many words in it:mad::mad:
In the end the only way we’ll be able to tell if this is a good idea or not is if someone just hosts the tourney and we wait for the outcome. That is, if you want to be sure I mean.
