Well duh, entirely different game in a different genre marketed under the same IP. Thing is SEGA knew what was going on the entire time with A:CM but allowed the farce to continue and ended up with that product. It isn’t about it turning out the same game wise, but turning out to be the same situation that took place.
I am just hesitant to trust them again, considering this could all be glorified before the impending release that turns out to be a wet turd. On the other hand, I also don’t want it to be one of those glorified Slender Man clones. “Oh hey you see the Alien JUMP SCARE x240, oh shit you dead now start over.” So far it seems you can escape and managed to elude the Alien so that is good as long as the novelty of the solo enemy doesn’t wear off quickly.
If they can make it as tense as Outlast with the Alien theme then I am all on that. But I have a right to be guarded about this whole project considering past experience.
See, if every SEGA game released in the past 3 years was like that, or you didn’t use A: CM as your sole example maybe I could see your point, but you’re still tethering the whole “Aliens” thing to your worry about this game.
And the tenseness of the horror and gameplay of the game isn’t what you should worry about, because we’ve seen enough gameplay to confirm that it’s on that level, at least in the specific areas shown to us so far.
What we all should think about it what comes after and between, because the devs say it isn’t all run and hunted and the Alien is all that the player has to interact with.
I think the hardest part of developing this game is making the alien scary from start to finish, because there is no variation in enemies, it’s only the alien so naturally players will get used to its presence.
This game is intense. I was getting nervous watching and I’m in a brightly lite room. The atmosphere drew me in more than anything I’ve experienced in the horror/suspense genre.
Why should they be happy about that, considering items in Amnesia were to solve puzzles or heal you, not fight off monsters/threats? Seems like a dumb comparison, IMO.
Overall the game seems to be shaping up pretty nicely. It’s good they added androids and people into the game to break up any possible monotony of being stalked by the alien. One concern I have, however, after watching the video is the part where the demo player died. It was hard to tell if the player made a mistake because they were a bit hasty, or if the only way to get past that part is to hide in the locker and wait for the alien to get distracted by the humans in the area. If it’s the latter, that feels too scripted and I hope that’s not going to be happening too often. We’ll see though.
How do you not get the comparison? Some people like @Sonicabid and @ExposedD didn’t like Amnesia because there was literally no combat system, no way to fight at all and for them the lack of any ability to struggle made it not scary, where as a game like Resident Evil 2 gives you at least a chance to stay alive and fight for your survival once you’re being attacked and for them that is where true fear and tension lies. In this game unlike Amnesia there is at least some form of defense with weapon crafting so it’s not like you instantly die.
In that video you see the android attacking Ripley who is clearly much stronger than her and the overwhelming odds is intended to cause the player to panic once exposed (heh) as much as the desire to not get caught in the first place. So at least so far it looks like people who disliked Amnesia should take comfort in knowing that while Alien is inspired by it, it’s also very different too.
yeah runningsimulators are boring
i have high hopes for this game though.
as long as they give you the option to fight the alien with various tools/weapons , i’m all golden ! I think i said this some while ago but imagine a grenade , or a flashbang (something similar to those 2) which you very rarely happen to stumble upon , and which will let you fend off the alien in a tense situation or maybe even while being chased. That would be something really good imo ! As for actually damaging the alien i have no idea of how that would work throughout the game , but i am excited to see what they come up with.
If that’s what you meant (about combat), then you worded it poorly. I don’t see how having a combat makes a game SCARIER as opposed to not having a combat system. Horror games don’t need combat systems to be scary. Opinions though, I guess.
In regards to Isolation’s “combat” system, they’re at least making it seem like the stuff you can use is mostly to combat humans or androids, not the alien, which is good.
I didn’t word it poorly you just don’t follow the horror thread lol. Those 2 guys along with the vast majority of GD seem to find horror games like Amnesia boring, I’m one of the only people here who seems to like let alone love the “instant game over/no combat” approach as much as the “limited options” one. I was just trying to explain (and in the process understand) why they dislike that style of game, but letting them explain for themselves seems better.
What ExposedD calls a “runningsimulator” I call a masterpiece which is fine as horror is super subjective what I find scary may not be what another finds scary.
yeah its fucking fantastic. but im actually playing from within the game world so I can’t say much for monitor gameplay except the graphics, lighting, sound are stellar.
the alien is unscripted though and triggered by clues left by you so you’re on your own haha. it’s mad hearing it crawling through vents showing up on your radar coming towards you
I was expecting this game to be on a larger scale and not have the alien follow in small segments, but rather wander the ship randomly.
Still pretty good though.
