That vid just makes me think, Alex’s model is actually pretty good, it’s just the posing in neutral makes him look super duper awkward.
So how do you all feel about this dood? Work bopping me so I can’t put much time.
Gonna be a specialist character. Doubt anybody will be running to him because of tiers, you either like him enough to make him work or don’t at all. Sitting in the mid-low end of the tier list to me, could use some very very VERY minor tweaks and bug fixes to sharpen him up a little bit.
Interesting. My plan was Laura until he came out, but I never get the chance to play, I don’t really have an opinion. Even if I don’t use him in tournament for whatever reason, I’ll probably still play online and such; since he’s my favorite.
I think he’s upper mid, he just feels weak to most people picking him up because you really can’t just play him off intuition alone, you do need to get labwork in otherwise you’re just not going to go anywhere with Alex.
There are some serious frustrations with the character though, for example his AA game is like 90% there but why the fuck only 90%? Why am I getting stuffed in what should be an identical scenario as the last time that worked?
Yeah I noticed his AA is a bit off. I was playing against someone who asked me to use Laura. There was just certain times where he had just to hold that pressure.
So I was doing some math and it turns out that Alex’s [st.LP, dash] anti air is only 3 frames slower than Chun Li’s [st.LK, dash]. I know 3 frames can mean a lot in this game but I messed around in training mode and had Ryu set to jump in and then mash st.LP (3 Frames) and almost every time I had enough time to dash underneath them as they were falling and stick out a meaty cr.LK and then combo.
I only mention this because I remember reading someone saying that it wasn’t viable because of how much slower than Chun’s it was (3 frames) and I also read that people feel at a bit of a loss after st.LP.
Oh, and normal Survival - I got frustrated with Ryu and Gief almost ending my day so I thought I’d try something. Turns out cr.LP xx LP/Ex-Headbutt confuses the hell out of Necalli and Bison. Against both I would literally block until I was safe to press something and then did that over and over.
Going to try Hard for the last colours later but just thought I’d throw it out there in case anyone else was having a problem getting the colours.
I faced off against a Bison that all he did was devilso reverse me cr lp in the corner…and I couldn’t do anything 0_0
In that situation I was using V-Reversal.
I was lucky after cheesing Necalli to have 90% HP so I could afford to take “Defence2” modifier. Once I got the cheese going on Bison though it was over. Maybe I just got lucky and they decided to be nice and let me have the colours.
(Just realised you wasn’t talking about Survival. My bad…)
Hey can we talk about v reversal oki options a bit more? I know he’s +8 after a dash, can he true meaty backtechs with st.mk or something? Most people mash it to escape the mixup, I’d assume a slash elbow would catch it.
anyone else chuckling at the fact that alex’s lose quotes everyone thinks he’s broke as fuck? lol…
You gotta react to devils early on and AA with something. I think Knee works well for that.
I never know what beats Bison’s stupid reverse so it’s usually down to me checking hitboxes. I’ll check later in the day and see what wins objectively at beating it, it’s probably light/EX Knee but cr.hp could work really well. St.lp, having doubts.
Another thing we should be trying to use is more integration of stomp setups. When you manage to knock someone down whiff st.lp/cr.lk x2 and then st.mp/powerbomb for the mixup, it’s a HDK all versions, so the reward is great.
you can generally buffer a stomp off of blocked pokes like cr.mp/cr.mk or standing st.hp
several good ways of setting up stomp:
f throw: you can do MK/EX Stomp here. off f throw you get st.hk/lk elbow meaties, mixing in a HDK overhead can’t be that bad of an idea right? but what if they jump? good news! you recover fast enough to st.lp and then get a st.mp/powerbomb mixup! (or cr.lk x st.lp x chop)
b throw: also works here, but you don’t get the lk slash/st.hk meaties, so it’s a bit harder to condition.
much stronger in the corner because you can meaty F+HP.
but what about quickrise backdash? HK stomp is a hard read/hard counter in both situations. I don’t believe they can block it because it hits during the animation.
the counter to all this stuff is just blocking and reacting to stomp/headbutts, but that’s not entirely out of our favor, he’s a grappler, he wants them to be afraid of moving.
thoughts?
Combining your points - You can land a meaty Ex-Stomp after a V-Reversal.
You can get a functional set up from a juggle Ex-Flash Chop (cr.HP/HK-Slash, Ex-Flash) into a LP-Headbutt (36frame startup) so I feel comfortable saying that you could go into MK-Stomp although I’m unsure whether it will connect.
I never use normal stomps outside of predicting/reacting to a fireball. Even then I tend to go for Ex anyways. I tend to value Headbutt more but that might be due to one of my friends (Most likely the best player I know) being a parry monster with Ryu.
Trying to execute parries is just really odd… I mean in the way you do it, sometimes I just forget to let go of the buttons to do another parry or punish a move with long recovery and accidentally get his clothesline instead. Not saying this as a bad thing though, I’m just trying to adjust to it that’s all. For the most part I’ve been practicing combos and what viable anti airs he has, pretty much everyone in the game has a good anti air jab and he’s no exception thankfully.
My problem right now with him is knowing how to use his V-Skill and V-Trigger properly… usually for V-Skill I do it full screen just to stay safe, but landing a hit is quite a bitch though it does add some layer of mixup between a command grab and a normal I assume. For his V-Trigger, well it may just be because none of the characters I play (only exception being Karin I guess) have a V-Trigger that’s akin to Cammy or Zangief… it’s certainly quite harder than it seems to know how to use it properly outside of combos/punishes, parrying is really fun though.
Also, my go to combo after the opponent is stunned is V-Skill -> st.HK -> HK Elbow -> LP Slash -> Super… if I don’t have meter I’ll just do AKS after elbow or EX Slash if I want to spend a bar, I just wonder if the combo option that doesn’t require his Super is the best one?
Last but not least, dude is fun as fuck to play in this game. I already really wanted for him to come back but I’m having way more fun with him than I imagined.
How do we punish DPs? medium punch doesn’t reach certain ones
Shk
HK is excellent and you can do a ton of things after that, or if it’s a shorter DP, or you’re too late, HP xx HP Chop xx Power Drop is good.
