A Madison, Ala., police officer has been arrested on assault charges for allegedly slamming an Indian citizen unprovoked to the ground face first during an arrest, leaving him partially paralyzed.
Sureshbhai Patel, 57, who does not speak English and recently arrived in the United States to help care for his grandson, remains hospitalized with partially paralyzed legs.
He will begin intensive rehab therapy next week.
The Madison police department has released a video of the incident last Friday that shows the encounter between Patel and two officers on a residential sidewalk in the Alabama town of 46,000 people.
The officers, who threw Patel to the ground within a minute and a half of approaching him, are heard complaining that Patel cannot speak English. After he is taken down, they try to stand him up despite his loss of control of his legs.
I know this is slightly old story, but I guess I was moved to post it since the victim was Asian and an immigrant.
The one bright spot is that at least the officer was charged.
Apparently not being able to speak English is a crime now too.
