I thought I had replied to this! Anyway, I cracked up when I saw the Tazz cyclone… totally agreed with you on this one.
I like the colors on Akuma, but it would be better if you toned down the saturation somewhat. It comes across as kinda bright.
Zangief/Viper pic is cool… it also reminds me of a pic I did a long time ago – looks like we had the same idea for composition! Gief in the bg, another char in the foreground, with smoke covering Gief’s legs. I think the proportions are very stylized, but it’s workable. this pic would look great colored!
Although i’m not a big fan of soft gradients,it looks interesting with the sharp black outlines. I plan to doodle up a pseudo-Chibi Ken during my next lecture.
Yeah, I don’t color often. I only have a mouse so I can’t really paint it in which would probably be much much easier. I was trying out different things with the Akuma.
Thanks for the comments and yes, Sasmasta, they are both in the collab thread already.
Do you dig the style of vector colour application? I just made up that term right now (that just may actually exist), you colour with solid fills only, no gradients. any transition is created through fills that gradually change. In other words, “anime that has highlights and shadows”.
check this caricature if you’re unsure of what i’m talking about. IMO, it’s got a level of sharpness, but it lacks realism for having no gradients.
Yeah, I just think of that as straight up cel style art or I’ve heard it referred to as “Cuts”. I’d like to do that but it’s hard to make curves with a mouse(Unless I use “Curves” of course but I’ haven’t really tried them) so it would come out jaggy instead of smooth like in your link.
I actually didn’t use gradients per say for the akuma but used solid fills and then gaussian blur over it for each shade. It’s effectively a gradient I suppose but I was just fooling around with it. Burn and Dodge aswell.
If I ever get around to getting a Wacom I would probably invest more time in learning to color but right now it’s just something for fun.
Next picture I do I might try the “cuts” style with curves and see how that turns out.
