Don’t get too caught up with Akuma’s offense, speed, footsie, zoning and mixup capabilities. Ken has the edge in this matchup.

akumas red fireball goes through kens EX fireball. not only do you waste one bar but you also either take chip damage or get hit and it also sways the momentum in akumas favor. i think that is retarded. if anything, it should be a fair trade and cancel each other out, even then, its not fair because ken still used up a bar.

yeah i agree, this thread should be renamed to why is Akuma better than Ken. not Akuma or Ken? because the answer is obvious.

I know someone already picked up on this, but what the hell are you talking about. Akuma has literally the fastest walk-speed in the game, a teleport, demon-flips, 3-frame jabs like all the other shotos, and a brutal step-kick. Ken, in contrast, is slower than ryu. In terms of the ability to move around the screen freely, Akuma is one of the fastest characters in the game.

Akuma is pretty much one of the best characters in the game, both offensively and defensively. He’s one of a few characters that actually force Sagat to dodge fireballs in a fireball war. He can do some of the best run-away in the game, he walks faster than most of the cast, he can step-kick and then combo off his step-kick, he has a command jump, he can provide cover for his attacks with air fireballs, his combos do a ton of damage, and he has no really bad match-ups.

Ken has a kara-throw, and can be played a bit more recklessly.

A bad ken is probably a lot better than a bad akuma, but that’s not really saying much, and if you’re trying to learn a new character, it’s probably better to learn one with legs. Besides, playing a good Ken requires absurdly good intuition and a lot of precision itself.

Only problem with this is that if you mess up at all, or if the opponet reads you, you’ll be taking much more damage. You have to play Akuma next to perfect to win at higher levels. Ken is safer to play as because you can make more mistakes in a high level game because you wont pay for it as much as you would with Akuma.

His teleport in my opinion is only good if used scarcely, you can use it to run away, but if it’s read by the opponet; they get another free punishment combo to the point that you will probably rather tech a throw to stop a rush down, or jump tatsu out.

His combos do a lot of damage yes, but his combos most of time get damage scaled like crazy, I think the the basic BnB combo his 6 hits, and that’s without leading into it with a shadow kick or FA or something. It does a good chunk of life in the beggining of the match, but towards the end you just get pissed off cause the combo ends up doing shit damage. Then you have the dizzy combos that you get, which are damage scaled even farther, but thats when you reset. Akuma is all about resets, that’s his strength. He can run away, and play a good defensive game, but everytime I see a good Akuma, they generally are playing rush down resets.
