Akuma General Discussion Thread: "I am the Master of the Fist!"

Footsies and patience man. Its not a good match for Akuma. What is giving you problems so I can give some advice.

Seems itazan doesnt know the match too well yet, he could have spd some of thise s.fp from Akuma which are -5, you can lariet through fireballs a lot.

Akuma is simply boring as fuck and lack the expansive toolset that made him a blast to play in SF IV.

garbage fireball game, in a game with a billion anti fireball tools

Awful limbs

Teleport might as well not exist

Super low health with defense that is mediocre, when Akuma usually have great defense.

There’s really no reason to play this guy, unless you just like him.

Still better than Ryu.

I agree with this except he’s not boring to play IMO. He’s really fun and going off on somebody feels rewarding because you have to work so hard in neutral to earn it.

Eh… I disagree partially. Akuma has an expansive toolset. One of the more expansive toolsets in the game by SFV standards. The problem though is that he pretty much always has to use all of it to do well… anything. Which makes the toolset seem smaller because you’re always having to use all of it. There aren’t any real “extra” tools to pull out of your bag of tricks when necessary.

However… Yep, his fireball game is garbage. His limbs couldn’t be stubbier. Teleport is only handy against certain characters, and pretty much only on wakeup or for trixxy demon setups. His defense isn’t garbage though… it’s non-existent. Partially due to system changes (trash shoryu being stuffed on wakeup and by well-timed jumpin attacks) and partially due to the fact they effectively didn’t bother to give him a V-skill (may-as-well-not-regenerate-at-all white life damage “armor” move on a char with no health…heh). Furthermore, his low health doesn’t pay off in damage or mixup potential unless he’s in vtrigger. Which is of course achieved by gimping combo damage or being half dead. Oh… and after you throw 3 or 4 decent fireballs, it’s gone.

Like I pointed out in my previous post though, he is definitely, DEFINITELY, for the fans. He’ll constantly give you that “just play another character” feeling when you’re playing him, and unless you’re just a long time Akuma main, I don’t know why you’d bother. Hell, he’s not even the best shoto until Ken dies or falls off the planet. I’ve had a certain distaste for Sagat nearly the entirety of my fighting game tenure, and right now I’d kill for him. Without him I don’t have a real backup, and Akuma NEEDS a backup; and Sagat covers all of his weaknesses. Or at least he should, provided they don’t butcher him. Kinda hoping Sagat (or his “replacement”) gets released sooner rather than later. Really unfortunate fucking Helen is going to be the first true S2 char -_-

Another issue with his defense is that his only reversal moves him a lot horizontally.
This means that it is easily baited by neutral jumps and in some situations where you would expect it to hit.
His buttons are stubby, but if you hit with them, you get a lot more than the opponent. The only problem is that you need Tokido/Sako level of spacing, which I ofc do not have.

His fireball game is decent, but never worth the risk of trying to establish one since one jump in wrecks you. Best used as a poke up close.

Teleport is good cross up defense putting you basically far a as fuck away if you do it as they jump. Just another option. As a wake up tool its the trashiest thing in that instance.

He has a lot of meaties sets ups and great normals up close. His game is essentially starts when he gets a knock down. His mid range game is just being careful with footsies til a knock down.

He also can cover both quick rise and back roll off multiple knockdowns that leave you point blank, something a lot of characters dont have unless they corner you and have a 4 active frame normal.

Sad but true.

It was already trending this way at the end of the SF4 life cycle (when Daigo said every char was getting an anti-fb move = anti-Ryu move) but 5 in particular with it’s high damage, swings of momentum and AA damage in general being rather pitiful even for DPs means that trying to zone, even if you have a godlike fireball game, is just looking to die… unless you’re Guile ayylmao.

It’s a large part, I think, in why Daigo struggled so much in 5, with its non-existent neutral and zoning; my friend used to remark that “he still plays like it’s 4”, just chipping and trying to zone and getting blown up by 5’s mixups and (random) offense.

And because you can never play perfect in this game of a myriad offensive options against a few defensive ones, picking a 875-health char is quite a gamble. A lot of times, all you need is that extra 25 health to survive your opponent’s mixup and go into your own rock-paper-scissors and win the game. This isn’t 4 anymore when you could jump back air-fireball on 850 health and make your opponent eat all the DPs on his way in and play a perfect defensive game.

Yep. Fun time to be a moreso defensive, reactive Street Fighter player. Especially with Akuma -_-

Aw man, poor Daigo in Topanga XD

No country for old men.

Yo how the fuck did Sako just man right up and parry that Stomp, isn’t he afraid of the grab option? Unless you’re telling me S-God can tell the difference within those startup frames lmao.

The grab he flips, the stomp he leaps

I kinda felt bad about this sequence … but back to back comebacks this funny is a must share

That’s a pretty huge deal, thanks for sharing.

A lot of times I have Trigger stocked, get a CR.MP BnB punish, and often just finish the combo normally without popping Trigger since the damage addition is often so low with scaling (like CR.MP -> ST.MK -> Trigger -> ST.MK…); I usually just wait for the next stray hit instead for activation, and that’s risky. Getting an unscaled combo/mixup after the punish is pretty big.

I’ll lab it out some and see how useful it is; would’ve been nice if that instant overhead worked on everyone instead of just Gief.

It works on Birdie too. Birdie is fucked in that set up. Gief has options.
