wow… this game is pretty cool
but can’t they make a GUI for that caster program & a lobby like GGPO/2DF?
would help this game a lot!

We mostly just use the IRC channel as a proxy for a lobby, it works pretty well for us.
Still, an easy lobby might give you a few more players.
I can’t help but agree with this.
People are lazy. Give them a lobby and they don’t have to download IRC, connect to the server, then connect to the channel just to solicit games, and you’d be surprised how many people are turned off by just that.
I think it might be best to get onto the whole lobby thing after all the stuff related to the caster is ironed out/complete.
Agreed. I really should have said that in the first place, huh?
Stupid, stupid, stupid Maria…
Now, now - no need to diss the character on my av like that. :razzy:
Seriously though, yeah, for the time being, the chatroom’s the best thing you folks have got. There’s a lot of US and non US folks there, so you’re bound to find a game every visit.
Just to make sure, you do know that Maria is my first name, right?
Actually, no, I didn’t know. Interesting coincidence, either way. :bgrin:
Indeed it is. That’s what I meant when I said “stupid, stupid Maria.” I have great ideas, but I rarely have the foresight to cover all my bases when it comes to my ideas.
From my limited experience, the online is passable and before GGPO/2df Caster was probably the best netplay for fighters available. It is superior to Kaillera/p2p, better than anything short of rollback netcode. At the very least it is consistent, so even if you require a lot of input delay to play someone you can compensate.
can someone explain what’s up with the Online section in the game’s Main Menu?
With the caster, it’s pretty much obsolete now. Earlier with the game’s inbuilt online (and later on with the nethack), you’d add in the ip, port and frameskip to play with or host games online.
can’t the caster be hacked/integrated with this menu?
seems a lot easier/friendlier than command line
also… what’s up with SS Matching Web?
Every question you’re asking is answered on the Netplay page of the wiki.
The lobby is not going to happen, there’s too much coding involved. There’s two other games Mauve has coded for and neither of them have a lobby. It’s not necessary or worth the hassle.
The in-game interface is NOT easier than Caster. It takes more time to enter the IP in because you have to select it one number at a time using a cursor, whereas you simply type it in inside Caster.
There is a web IRC client for Mizuumi which requires no downloading of any sort for those who don’t want to get mIRC.
A lobby would help numbers a bit but honestly if you’re too lazy to go through these very simple, basic functions you probably wouldn’t have stuck with the game anyways. The effort required for the potential return isn’t justifiable.
i don’t wanna idle on IRC with a bunch of random US players… i was hoping for an easier way to get into the game so it might get some international/Euro players too.
not gonna happen under the given circumstances.
a GGPO/2DF-like lobby would make it easier to setup games, no more IP exchanging and random IRC channels to spread the already thin playerbase.
Did you read what I just said earlier?
So it’s not just “random US players”. In fact, there’s a good number of EU folks in the channel, too (Finland, Hungary and the UK, amongst others). Besides, anyone curious about the game would find the steps incredibly easy and hardly complex as you make it out to be.
I have absolutely no interest in lobbies or developing any sort of GUI for this thing. I much prefer the sense of community IRC gets you to the more impersonal nature of lobbies, and my command-line whore nature likes the little easy to use text menus. (Did I mention that ABK + ABKCaster works flawlessly on Linux with wine? Really!) If anyone wants something more, it’s their job, not mine.
Integrating with the builtin netplay is both a completely ridiculous amount of work and pointless. It’s a very clunky set of menus, and, unfortunately, the way ABK works is all menus are scripted in a custom fashion, so if I want to modify how they work, I have to pretty much literally decipher the binary scripts which define the program flow. Which is so completely not happening. This is also why I don’t want to deal with anything possibly relating to an English patch for it: All the dialogue is in those script files too.
The Caster that’s out now is plenty usable. I seem to have fixed all the major issues related to it, so there’s basically no reason not to use it while I tune up the more minor parts. Desyncs were the really big one and I got lucky by figuring out what caused them in the first shot. So, yeah, I’m in no particular rush here so stuff’ll get done when it gets done.
And for anyone who was wondering, the builtin netplay is pretty much trash as it was. It’s kinda like the developer knew he needed input delay and UDP packets but did not understand the purpose of either, and what you’d basically end up with is running at a fraction of your normal frame rate. eg you need 5 delay to play, so the game run at 1/5th frame rate. It’d work great on a LAN or on very low pings (<32ms), though!
…
Seriously?
This is 2009, right? I thought people stopped being worried about this shit years ago. Unless you bought into that whole “YOUR COMPUTER IS BROADCASTING AN IP ADDRESS” crap.
Protip: Every place you go on the Internet knows your IP address. And if you connect to anyone with anything, even a lobby or whatever, they can know it there, too.
If you’re behind a firewall or security router of any sort, you are safe and have absolutely nothing to worry about.
how about making a simple lobby with an IRC module that connects to that #akatsuki @ irc.mizuumi.net channel and when you rightclick people a challenge button appears that will exchange match details
can’t be THAT hard…
