After 12 Months of Super, where do you see Cody?

I’m relying on the knife more and more in matches vs grapplers, I feel it changes the flow of the match if you can make your grappling opponent fear your long range poking game.

knife is uber useful…especially if u see a match not going your way totally. I’ve had matches where I never even attempt to go for it, yet I have had matches where I snag it and shank the fuck out of people.

like others have said, just the thought that you’re going to pick it up can mess with your opponents game. And knife pickup FADC can actually win u matches (did it to a Ryu when he was knocked down next to it, he goes to SRK me and I fadc backdashed to safety)

I Honestly think its too early to call his placing. He seems like a fairly unique character where he might either go up or down at this point, the game just came out and its hard to call the shots this early. The worst I see him placing is middle of mid though…cant see him being bad

Honda was very strong against MOST of the cast in SFIV. In fact, he had very little in the way of changes for Super yet look where he is places on the iplaywinner tier list: http://iplaywinner.com/display/ShowImage?imageUrl=/storage/oneuse/tierlist-may2010.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1273862898014

Honda works like this… He absolutely hulk-smashes most of the cast - feeling absolutely god tier against many characters with his speed, moveset and damage - but anyone who can zone effectively and keep him out becomes PARTICULARLY difficult. For example, Guile, Sagat, Ryu, Ken. Of the new cast, only Dee Jay zones well, and even he isn’t at the level of the characters previously mentioned.

Of course, I basically agree with you. If you stick at Cody you will eventually get good enough to overcome his short-comings and beat MOST other players. Unfortunately, as is the case with Mike Ross, beating those elite players at the top who have a character that counters you hard (say, Rufus in Cody’s case with wake-up dive kick pressure), is going to be an uphill battle.

I think Balrog is a better character to compare to Cody. Balrog has a rubbish wake-up game but could still win tournies due to his overall character design. I guess it comes down to whether Cody’s design shines through as strong enough that he can still be competitive after taking his obvious weakness into account.

Yea SirPants you have some great points. Basically what i wanted to say to others was if you like a character’s playstyle, why should you let a tier list dictate whether you play with them or not. There is always going to be bad matchups, your job is to address these shortcomings and find a proper solution depending on the character your fighting.

Rog has a faster walk speed and his normals are better for playing footsies and atleast he can reversal u with headbutt cody don’t got that

imo cody is kinda like rog of vanilla. He won’t be winning tournaments like talking about if at all. But he’ll knock a couple out of em. Outside of ibuki and dudely, cody is prob the only other good new character.

exactly.

I love using cody, but he really loses in air to air combat, and once an opponent gets in on you, you better hope to God that ex zonk knuckle works, because if not, you’re gonna be on the wrong side of an ass kicking for awhile.

Then throw in moves your opponent has that grant 50/50’s (ie blocked Tatsu RAPES cody)

if you had to ask me, i would say Cody is mid to high b tier. He is WAY too weak in wakeup and air to air to be A tier, sadly

Been playing a lot of Ibukis that just chip a little an run away the entire match. Ugh…

/whine

Capcom doesn’t know what they’re talking about most of the time. Ono’s team said that Cody’s game revolved around the knife in Alpha 3, which was complete BS, since it was borderline useless. Cody’s strengths in that game had to do with his jump speed, good anti-airs, fast, long range pokes (s. RH, hopkick), hopkick shenanigans, mix-up, top tier corner trap, and long range, 70-100% damage VCs.

The knife doesn’t seem much better in SSF4. You get better pokes, yes, but Cody’s not a strong footsie character to begin with, given how slow he walks and the start up on some of his better pokes. I mean, sure there’s no harm in picking it up if you have time, but it’s not a game changing thing. Plus, his mix-up is actually worse with the knife than without because he loses all his command normals, and most importantly, standing MP.

I’m pretty bummed out that his air-to-air is comparatively weak in this game because he easily had the strongest air-to-air normals and one of the fastest jump speeds in A3. Seems like they slowed him down a lot to go with his new bored persona. Sure, it might make sense story-wise, but gameplay-wise, it hurts him.
