How good would you say Guy is?
If you were to group the characters in fives, in terms of their relative strength: 1-5 being the best, 31-35 being the worst, where would you place Guy?
I’d say he’s in the 26-30 and possibly even 31-35 bracket.
Crouching/not jumping vs. Guy makes that match up almost a joke. I’m starting to see why people consider him so weak. As Cody I don’t think there’s much cause for concern. Stick your shit out on the ground and watch for cross-ups, after that it’s business like usual.
If you are halfway decent yourself, then you can create opportunities that let you pick up the knife safely. This is like saying “Nobody halfway decent will ever let Hakan oil up.” It’s just not true.
either you knock someone down and pick up the knife for free, which obviously will work although you give up the only good mixup opportunity Cody gets… or you take a gamble on the other guy being asleep at the wheel, and pick it up when you are full screen because anything closer than that and you are going to get smoked… The other problem with that being the other guy is no longer full screen after you take the time to grab the knife, and he knows he only needs to try and throw you once to ensure you lose it. The knife is cool but you will get maybe 10 seconds of knife time in per MATCH against anybody good
I hate to say it because this next argument is generally a cop out, but you need to play better opponents and STFU on this one.
I love Cody, but I think he’s gonna be pretty boring in 12 months if you are using his U1. U2 Cody plays more safely. More of a gotcha type fighter. If I wanted to rely on FADC>Ultra I would main RYU or Sagat. Cody’s U1 is useless without it. People are already starting to realize that you can just duck the FADC and avoid that U1.
As far as the knife goes… I never pick it up until the final round. By that time, my opponent has completely forgot about it, but the shank changes the whole scope of the match. Once I grab it, people seem to panic and do dumb stuff, or take it lightly and inexplicably jump right into it. (over and over!) That’s what makes Cody so fun, but 12 months from now, people wont be so dumb, and the knife will more than likely be irrelevant. Cody is the flavor of the month. He’s not deep enough to keep the competition on it’s heels.
I agree that there is a trade off to be made, and it is indeed situational (is the knife even in range? Has my opponent been “on it” countering my current tactics already? Or will this break the momentum I already have?) but I still think you’re undervaluing the match changing the potential of the knife when in hand, especially if you’re down in the round. You’re trading possible mixup potential now for an enormous potential gain in the future, as far as variance of attack, damage output, chip damage, etc. I think the risk/reward can be more worth it than you think. Additionally, if your opponent is so concerned with “never letting Cody pick up the knife” you can play some serious mind games with them. You lose that completely if you just ignore it.
Picking up the knife is only a small boost to Cody’s offense… the only thing really going for it is the chip damage you can get with mashed c.lp, because otherwise the damage difference is insignificant. If you want to keep the knife, your offense becomes more limited because a throw attempt drops the knife. You can’t pressure as well because you lose f+mp. You make one small mistake and you lose the knife, etc. Cody’s pokes aren’t any better w/the knife than they are without it.
In this case that argument is not a cop out because… you legitimately don’t get it.
I don’t think Capcom included the Knife for no reason (as far as gameplay goes). Yes it is part of Cody’s arsenal, but that doesn’t mean that Capcom would waste valuable time and assets to create a whole new paradigm for just one character if it was going to be completely useless.
Honestly, even if I never, ever use the knife, just sitting on top of it, is enough to take my opponents attention away from what they were planning to do. If it’s too early to make accurate tier lists, and match-up advice, than it is still too early to make judgments on whether or not the knife is worthless.
I’ve never even considered just picking the knife up while the opponent is up. That is just stupid. Of course you pick it up while they are down. Yes you trade a mix-up opportunity to make a play on the knife. Sometimes its worth it, sometimes not. Personally, I have found the knife handy. Not game changing awesome or something to base your entire round on, but handy enough to pick up now and then just to apply some chip damage, get some good pokes, or make the opponent second guess himself.
The knife is useful IMO. It’s not like it’s OP or that it changes much, though it’s a good tool if you’re able to pick it up and use it. It does chip damage, and it’s speed is nice. You can still do combos with it, which do good damage. Also, I’ve noticed that once I pick it up, my opponents do one of two things. They get more defensive, or more aggressive. I assume they get defensive in fear of the knife, and aggressive because one unblocked attack will make Cody drop the knife.
I use it at the end of rounds when my opponent has very low health, when I get a knock down. If I can get close, I can just chip them out. And in certain match-ups and situations, I will use it more often.
Flavor Of the month?
dude cody may not be a deep complex character
but he has enough options for me
Criminal Upper
Ruffian Kick
Zonk Knuckle
Rail Slide
Air HP(some reason i always get people with this)
Knife
Rocks
now it’s my opinion cody will be in the middle
he’s not the best
but who can say whose the best
when a character has a weakness
once you exploit it
they’re not so tough
You really expect me to believe a tier list that has Fei Long placed higher then Dudley and C. Viper? How the hell is Rufus #1 when all he got were nerfs?
edit: Ahaha, according to that list T. Hawk is 6-4 against Cody.
Because his fundamentals are still as dangerous as before, almost everyone got damage nerfs anyway, and Rufus also got one of the game’s best new Ultras. Big Bang Typhoon shuts down a LOT of stuff in matchups that would otherwise be bad for Rufus.
Tier lists like this don’t matter to most people just yet, anyway. Rufus is only REALLY dangerous if you do one-frame links reliably, and how many players outside of tournaments do that?
That Tier list is very debatable though Cody’s matchups seem pretty spot on for the most part. I don’t really feel he is at a disadvantage or advantage in most matches at the moment. Just boils down to who is the better player.
As for the knife, out of principle I try to pick it up once a game but I don’t rely on it. It does have its advantages (as already stated above) and if you get the opportunity, you should grab it.
