Advanced Balrog (Boxer) Mind Games + Tricks

so this question is directed more towards keno but if anyone has any info feel free to comment. i was wondering if you could focus to tap to ultra? i got a focus to tap but it was pretty hard to get that going so trying to get the ultra in another thing, idk just something i thought about

yes, you can focus into tap into ultra… Although it’s not really the most optimal combo to use in that situation unless you’re going for flashiness. Damage is inferior to some other options.

I was messing around in training mode and found a couple of reset mix-ups that can be used after scoring a focus crumple. In most cases it might be better to just do a high damage combo, but if you happen to dizzy your opponent during a long string and want to gamble for a chance to reset the damage scaling, these shenanigans might be useful. Apologies in advance if these have been posted already.

Anyway, all these resets done off a focus attack crumple:

1. dash cancel forward, jump forward: The jump forward will cross over, and you’ll land on the other side just as your opponent is falling flat on his face. You should have enough time to reset with either c. lk or c. mk, after which you can go for a throw, a jump-in attack, or a rush punch.

2. dash cancel forward, neutral jump: Same thing as 1, except it doesn’t cross over. Once again you’ll land just in time to reset with c.lk/mk.

3. dash cancel forward, reset with c. mp xx low upper: If timed right, the c.mp will pop your opponent up and the low uppercut will cross underneath your opponent before he lands for an interesting mix-up :wgrin:.

Most of my testing was with a training dummy Ryu, I’ll try to update this post with a list of characters that these tricks work on.

The 3rd option looks good, the first 2 are just asking for more complications (imho). You can just focus, dash c.lp tick throw. It’s a lot easier and still catches people by surprise. If you’re playing against a srk mashing scrub it won’t make any difference because you’re gonna eat a shoryuken anyways.

Well, regarding option 1 and 2, I think a lot of people have already seen focus, c. lp tick throw, and will be looking to tech it. Also, a simple c. lp doesn’t give you an option for mixing in anything other than a throw or an overhead. At least with this you get a bit more variety, and a bigger chance of catching your opponent off-guard if he wasn’t expecting something different than usual.

c.MP xx EX Upper, Tick Throw still works great but burns an EX. You can do it without EX but I think people expect a C.LP after the EX

The Low Upper crosses up a lot of blocked Blanka balls/Super/Ultra too, but I end up getting electrocuted to death

@Mendes: Hmm, if I’m going to combo out of a dizzy, I do the usual j hk, cs. hk, c. lk xx ex rush upper and either go through with the string into headbutt, or throw from there.

Anyway, I just finished testing the low uppercut crumple resets on all match-ups, looks like when I was writing my first post I had been screwing up my timing a bit with the non-ex versions. Turns out you can use non-ex versions just fine for crossing up as well :wgrin:…

Also, after a bit of experimentation, I found out c. lk also works better in most cases.

MP xx rush low upper crosses under:
Gen
Dan
Ryu
Vega
Gief

c. lk xx rush upper crosses under:
Rufus
Rose
Gen
Viper
Sagat
Abel
Vega (Claw)
Bison (Dictator)
Seth
Honda
Gief
Ken
Chun Li
Fei Long
Akuma
Gouken

Neither reset works on:
Balrog (Boxer)
El Fuerte
Guile
Blanka
Dhalsim
Cammy
Sakura

I also tested it out on several online matches and it worked like a charm.

Okay gentle men I am back and this one goes to Puerto Rican Balrog for this awesome find. Activating the Super with kicks is 1 frame faster than activating it with punches. So now Balrogs super is 8 frames and can punish some of the shoto sweeps and hondas EX headbutt. All you have to do is activate it with kicks, the first hit does not have to be an upper. As far as if the ultra is 1 frame faster I dont believe so. So now when honda does all the ex headbutts, hes not safe anymore. Im sorry Mike Ross :] Puerto Rican Balrog good find sir. Balrog technology from around the globe!

I tested this a little bit. I got some free throws out of it, but my other mixups were usually blocked. Although my opponent probably got used to it after a few times so it will work better in a fresh match.

Thanks for the tip.

Btw. I think this doesn’t work in the corner, right? At least against Akuma, I couldn’t croos him if the crumble was in the corner.

I wasn’t able to test it out on everybody in a corner, but yeah it didn’t work on the few I tested it on.

Can someone make a vid of this perhaps? Ive been trying to do it but i must have the timing wrong.

The person that does all this stuff consistently will have my respect forever!

You’re probably trying to combo into exHB after the OH which isn’t possible. The idea is to knock down the opponent then whiff the OH. Now you can play mindgames on his wakeup since they’ve gotta guess. Will he grab? LPxxcombo? exHeadbutt? Its a fun trick. One that I tend to overuse.

WTF! Ultra link after standing jab!? HOW?

Time for some leisurely reading.

Yeah, read that thread posted above. Also, here’s a high quality video I made of it with no macros and a description of why it works.

Balrog/Boxer More Jab to Ultras (1 Frame Link, No Cancel)

Yeah i know what you mean, but it feels like the OHP wont recover in time for me to have an adv over the opponent on wake up. So basically you do this trick after a ultra/throw into the corner?

I almost always whiff an OH after I knock my opponet far away so I can keep up the offense. Usually after a headbutt but never after ultra/super. Are you making sure to use ex HB? Regular HB gets beaten by alot of stuff like sweeps, srk, etc.

what works best after i knocked them down?

grab? LPxxcombo? exHeadbutt?

u have some statistics?? ^^

You have to mix those up. If you keep using the same thing over and over again people will just adapt.
