Adopt a n00b, pass on the knowledge

Follow on from another thread.

Lots of new players are gonna be around for this and SFIV, so how about the better players that are willing to help share a bit of their experience with the new? All it would involve is playing a couple of matches every so often, telling them what they suck at so they can practice, then playing again a few days later to see if they’ve improved and there’s anything else you can help with.

Anyone up for this? If so use this format:

Or how about you stop trolling, start playing, and acquire that knowledge yourself?

Can I ask how the hell thats trolling? There’s only so much you can learn by playing random people online… I’m ok, I’m a quick learner, but there are others out there that arent, and need more guidance. A lot will just get hammered, lose heart and stop playin. Surely helping people get better, keeping them in the game and the community, can only be a good thing?

Thing is, if there was a massive network like there is now, people that played years ago would have used it. I used to play quite a bit back in the day, but whenever you went to the arcade you would only play vs cpu which teaches bad habits, its like relearning the whole thing

I have to agree with Tin here. This is actually a good idea to help beginners learn the game. There are plenty of people who learn better from a tutor than from reading a textbook. The problem is that most good players are elitists.

If anyone really is willing, I am definitely down…So…

Thing is, judging from OP of both posts, he just sounds like someone who just wants his talent spoon fed to him, not willing to work on it. I don’t mind giving out pointers, or getting pointers, but just through the context of these posts, that’s what it LOOKS like: that he’s investing more time in making posts asking people to improve his game than he actually playing the game he’s wanting to improve in.

It’s not that I don’t think this is a bad idea in general, it’s just the way it looked, considering the prior thread he posted in this area. I can learn from reading to an extent, but advanced strategy only gets in my head from application, and I still have to apply what I read regardless.

If that’s not the case, then my bad. It’s just what it looked like, and on the internet, you get those kind of reactions. Giving this thread a fair shake, I’d like to learn some of the finer points from Cammy that I’m missing from someone that’s been there:

I dunno, im all about good community, if any XBL players want tips on Guile, Gat or Sim play, I would be more then happy to help a guy out.

Mention SRK in a FR and ill happily help a “noob” out.

^^ ditto; i can help new people somewhat with the game.

Im down to teach.

I will swallow my pride and ask for help if anyone is willing to provide it

Actually, I don’t mind putting all of the effort in myself and learning the game, the other thread was to get any finer points that you can’t get from just playing.

I made this thread in response to this in the other thread:

I know people always get super offensive/defensive on the internet, and if they are reading things when they are in a certain mood totally take it the wrong way.

:woot:

Honestly people should do some research first, there’s so much info on sf2 out there… I don’t think I need to hold someone’s hand all the time.

  • SRK wiki
  • Strat threads in the ST and ST HD forums
  • LOADS of ST match vids
  • Multiple websites

I mean what else could you ask for ? In the end it all comes down to putting all that into practice.

Its not a case of hand holding, its a couple of matches, see what the other person needs to improve, let them know. Thats it. Takes all of 10 mins.

You can read all you want, but reading and putting into practice isnt an immediate thing for some people. Sometimes a couple of pointers can make the world of difference.

i will clarify what Tin means, is that there’s a difference between teaching what and *how *to do something and whenand why to do something…or not do.

…it’s the* why’s *and when’s that the newer players need help on.

…you can’t expect the new players to watch a match video and understand what’s going on, because they don’t know the why’s and *when’s *yet.

it’s a totally different attitude than someone that says, “what to do in this situation…” < = that’s spoon-feeding this guy is looking for.

the experienced players need to also explain why a player does certain things in specific scenarios.

A lot of people seem to not realize that not everybody learns the same way. While some of the old schoolers might have been able to best learn from trial and error on their own, there are some out there who learn best from having a guide.

Whether or not the guide just needs to give them a base and then the player can develop on their own, or whether or not the mentor/tutor/guide has to teach them everything about their own personal playstyle depends on the person.

With the options we have in this day and age, there’s absolutely no reason people shouldn’t be looking to be taught how to play SF. Not everybody mystically teaches themselves martial arts. What makes STHD any different?

I’m a really big n00b to SF, all iterations, past and present. This (SSF2HDR) is the first SF game I have ever played. I’m watching videos, reading sirlin’s blogs about each character, and reading the specefic character threads. Now I think I will eventually be able to get a lot better by doing this (and when I get an arcade stick), but for some people they learn better by having somebody guide them, like what Iceage yet.

You know what I learned from watching match vids in Anniversary collection at SBO?

Old Sagat fireball+dragonpunch= win.

Along those lines… I have watched a lot of the videos, but are unsure of which version of the linking attacks are used (med dragon punch vs. light dragon punch to connect for example). Would anyone know of a site with a shortlist of combos for hd remix to learn from ?

While more experienced players learned on their own back in the day, they didn’t have a lot of the incredible resources we have now. It’s much easier to pick up knowledge with the internet, and that’s not really a bad thing…I can see why a lot of people would think it’s a lame shortcut to ask for online help, but if it’s a solid resource, why not use it? While I don’t think it’s right to tell your personal game plan to a random SRK poster, I think it’s a dick move to hide fundamentals from people who could obviously benefit from them.

Online matches with voice comm are great ways to learn/teach SF, as well as pretty much any other game. Asking questions and getting answers during a match is a MUCH BETTER way to learn the game than to play random people and watch vids of pros, especially when you don’t know what’s going on in pro matches and the random people online may have no idea what they’re doing.

I’m all for helping people out in SF, even though I’m not as experienced as a lot of the players on here. But I do have at least some concrete knowledge of the game, and any knowledge that I have that others don’t can be useful, no matter how experienced they are…being a good coach doesn’t always mean being the best player.
