Adjusting to online play

I’m new to Street Fighter 4 and have spent most of my time learning Vega. The problem is I recently started to play online where it seems impossible to land any of Vega’s hit 1-frame bnb combos. I also have a hard time reacting (read “guessing”) my opponent’s play. I can’t be choosy about my opponent’s connection because it’s hard enough to find any games (I play on PC, I’m not sure if it’s as dead on other consoles or not). Anyway, what are some adjustments people make when they play online? Is hit confirming still possible with difficult links, or should I just stick to 2-in-1’s? General strategic changes? any help is appreciated.

I can attest to the horrible connections that exist on PC.

keep it simple for the most part.

Playing online is definitely a hassle, and it is NOT easy, I tell you that much. However, if we ever hope to learn our match-ups, Online is our only option. In order to get used to it, try playing in some Endless Lobbies for awhile before you tackle ranked. Or don’t tackle ranked at all, ya know? You’ll eventually get the feel of it down and you’ll be all set. Good luck man.

Problem is online play can affect button inputs. GGPO is not suited for keyboard players. gaming client, according to net speed and ping, changes at least 50 % of keyboard inputs. SFIV suffers from this as well in laggy matches. Supercade is much better suited for it.

I hope Skullgirls PC version, based on GGPO, will address this issue.

I’m pretty sure you’re setting something up wrong or your kb can’t handle enough simultaneous inputs . I used a stick with mapped keyboard inputs from xpadder/joy2key on ggpo for years with no problems.

Online doesnt matter don’t let it get you down. Just keep practicing offline and youll be in good shape.

Well I have to disagree with you friend, Online does matter for those of us who can’t afford to drive out to our local scene day in and day out. Plus its a great way to learn matchups against characters your friends don’t play.

I will agree with you, however, in that we shouldn’t take Online Seriously.

it is not a matter of inputs, but input delay. as if in every match you have to press keys in different timing. Supercade has lag too but timing remains more stable. games like KOF especially are influenced by that. also in specials like LK HK HP HP UP timing changes on GGPO. not on Supercade.

As a relative newcomer to the online scene myself, I found a couple things really made a difference for me:

  1. Blocking. I was in the trap of thinking that if I rushdown without pause, I couldn’t lose. Blocking gives me a few seconds to gather my thoughts, watch my opponent, and also gives me a chance to look for an opening.
  2. You hear this all the time, but taking defeat as a learning experience. I know its a cliche, but not only has this mindset helped me to improve, most importantly it gives me the patience to keep fighting after getting whomped half-a-dozen times in a row.

Super simple advice from a relative newcomer, but those two things have been game-changing for me.
