Yeah, single elimination for SC2 is good. Since Nick Jr. retired his Ivy, he won’t be unbeatable anymore. All I have to worry about is Nick Sr.'s Voldo, Cassy, Astaroth, and many of his other characters that he can play good. I actually think he master every single character in the game, he might as well play Charade.
How about we drop cvs2 altogether, from my personal experience, running multiple tournies took more time because I know how often people were busy on other games. Does anyone care about cvs2 at the moment? The controls are flaky and it’s not like anyone plays it to get better or see anything new. It’s just a novelty. One game on GGX2 is lame, it’s the newest most popular game and people don’t want to get scrubbed out one game. Paul’s idea is good that if we start at 8:30 drawing out the brackets and then got the game set to tourney mode by 9:00 and began, I think that would help a lot.
Why is there so much emphasis on tournaments? Especially post-Evo when there is nothing to be getting ready for. Why not cut the frequency down to once a month or something?
Me personally, even with just a $1 entry fee, I’ll probably try to avoid coming up on tournament nights because I know I won’t get many games in. I don’t believe people play less serious outside of tournements. If somebody has a streak on the machine you are going to want to end that no matter what.
GGXX seems to be the only game people care about, so why bother with tournaments in any of the other games.
I agree with what Gary’s saying. But I think what we’re trying to do by holding tourney’s so that people can stay or join the scene. I mean, sure you can play and learn the game, but it wouldnt’ matter if you can’t even show how you have progressed without going to a tourney. I think that’s cool and I agree with that. Personally, I think tourney’s sometimes (if they care) brings out the best in all of us. You try harder cause you know there’s money involved (past post by Paul “Greed motivates”).
You said about someone having a streak and you wanna beat it. To me I can careless much about how much streak that person gets, what matters is if that person brings it in the tourney. Cause now, money’s involved. That’s why I like the idea of us holding tourneys, so that it keeps people motivated, and also keeps them interested in the scene. Just me though.
P.S. CvS2 can be dropped if you guys want. I wanna keep practicing in this game cause I was disappointed on how I did in this game this year. I got caught up with GGXX that I forgot about CvS2, and to me that’s bad. The SF games though (CvS2 and MvC2) I think, should stay even if there’s little or no people that really knows how to play this game cause if ya’ll want people to get into the scene you gotta try and make em see that you guys are also interested in the game. I don’t want this town to be a SC2/GGXX town only. I want us to actually also have a SF scene (i.e. CvS2, 3S, MvC2, ST) cause this is what Rob tried to start, and it’s kinda sad that we’re diverting to 2 games instead of being good at multiple games.
Hehe ok I might as well say this. Drop the tourney’s :). I think we should limit it to once a month like what Gary said. So at least people have time to actually learn the game, or learn new characters in the games (i.e. iidx-Nick learning a different character, Gary getting back into the scene, BPC and Elec and the rest of the new peep’s learn GGXX and the like). I think that should be enough time for them to learn or get back in the groove. I still back up on what I said awhile ago. But it seems that, it’s better to give people time to learn so that they won’t rely on just certain things or moves or characters. Again just an opinion.

I don’t really want to drop cvs2 altogether either, I just suggested that until it’s fixed it could be left out to make time for the other tourney’s. I know it’s a seeminly minor problem on the 2nd player side but when you take the game serious and you’re playing in a tourney the insecurity that comes from a stick like that can mess you up. I didn’t miss anything that cost me a match because of the stick but I did find it frustrating to have dashes not come out and some of my jumps just went straight into the air. I apprecaite what John has done for us and this is not to undermine his work, I feel kind of like a pest to complain to him about because he has fixed it many times, it’s a reoccurring problem that I have no idea why but less than 2% of the time it messes up, it can be hard to convince someone who is fixing it that there is truly a problem when it works over and over for them. Aside from that I wouldn’t mind playing 3rd strike or ST on console tournies at someone’s house (Rob and Nick are best candidates, Paul has good hospitality but lives pretty far out) I know Rob is starting school soon again and I don’t know how many people would be interested but I would.
Marvel is pretty fun to me and I will join tournies for the game but I don’t have any plans on being hardcore about it, I’m just to far behind.
SC2, I have to wait for the game to come out on US consoles before I can learn this one.
GGX2, damn I don’t want this one to die on us, my opinion has been that weekly tournies encourage learning and participation more so than a monthly tourney, like my brother, he looks forward to playing in the tourney every week, tourney matches actually matter to people, people talk about the money but was money really the motivation to do well at Evo? I don’t think so, you just wanted to do your best and place as high as possible, that’s the way I feel about our local tournies. I actually get excited about the tournies and wonder who will beat who and what upsets there may be, that’s my opinion, I just don’t want this scene to die.
I think the biggest issue isn’t the fact that we’re running tournaments. It’s the fact that since I’m working, and you guys are waiting up for me, our tournaments are running way too late. I honestly like having tournaments, and I hope we still have them. I mean, the options are simple.
a): We don’t have them.
b): We have them, but start earlier for the people that’re there.
c): Play money matches instead. O_o
d): Just play casual on Fri/Sat nights, and have bi-weekly’s / monthly’s
IMO, I think B or D is the best answer.
I think having weekly tourneys could be very stressful and could burn out a person if they are serious about it. Especially if you have school and work. Having a monthly tourney seems like a great idea, you get more time to prepare and practice, and you don’t have to crunch it in all in one week. Plus it gives us ok type players to rise up to the next level by practicing and asking for tips from the veterans, instead of them giving us an ass whooping at weekly tourneys. Hopefully I can bring my 2d fighting skills up to the next level. Be kinda hard since I got school starting next week, plus I got to train for a martial arts tourney, but I can do it.

What style? I am a second degree blackbelt in GoJuRyu…i am also a second degree blackbelt in Shaolin kemp and im considering taking up another style.
Cassandra aside, I only play the characters on the bottom two rows…just look at the top 4 rows…it’s all those annoying scratchy characters…:lame:
As for this heated tournament discussion, if people are complaining they can’t show up for tournaments doesn’t that mean they can’t show up for casual play either? I mean, if you can’t show up you can’t show up, so it really doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing.
Anyways…I’m going to say, FUCK weekly tournaments…they’re fun, but they’re a huge waste of time now that EVO is over. Every two weeks sounds great to hold a weekend of tournaments. Take two days, start them early and if there’s time, people can be social afterwards. The thing is that tournaments let us be content as we know where we stand. Casual play is fun, but I’m not planning on losing to Junior again no matter who he plays, so I’ll need a tournament to reclaim my first place. And while JP is putting it off for now, he knows he wants that first place in GGXX. Everybody wants to beat the shit out of that Potemkin, but we need a tournament to officially bury that giant, metal piece of crap deep in the cold, cold Earth forever. :fury:
Anyways, if any of you guys plan on heading down to the arcade this week, gimme a call so I can get some practice in…
Peace out!
=)
Next tourny i would LOVE to fight Chris first round =) that or Rob first round hehe ^^ Two completly different styles…i wanna test myself and until then i will be practicing.
So, like, I want top GGXX? I don’t think I want to be, now that Evo is over with. Tourney’s are one way to show how well you can do, againts the people that you have played againts over and over. Eventually people will learn your style, and beat you on that. Chris stayed with Pot cause that’s who he’s winning with, and he’s gonna stick with that. To be honest, I wanna just have fun from here on out. Not look at winning the tourney anymore, but to see how far I have gone, after evo. When you think about it, I haven’t really. Since I still lose to a Potemkin. I wanna beat Chris’s Potemkin with Dizzy. That’s my promise to myself. On the thing about the tourney’s, weekly’s should be dropped. Once a month is the only way to go. Screw Bi-weekly’s, it’s the same as weekly’s except 2 weeks everytime. Once every month is enough I think. Giving people enough time to get on with their things ( school, work, family, ect…). Can’t expect people to be attending it 100% of the time. Evo’s done with. So just focus on what’s ahead. We got a year to progress from our stand point now.
And to what Chris said:
you’re kidding yourself if that wasn’t linggering on top of your head. I understand when you say, to get to meet and play againts people. To see how you match agiants them, and see how far your “training” has put you. But regardless of how we put it, getting $xxx.xx amount on a tourney that big, and say you don’t care about it, is bs to me. You know you wanted it, and deep down you think you can make it up there. So for you to spend $200 to $300 on this trip, and say you don’t think about the cash price. Well I got one thing to say to that. Go to SVGL. It’s a lot cheaper for you to go to, and has easy access, if you only look for seeing how far you can go. Seriously, i think it’s a lie when someone tells me that. But that’s just me.
JP
Reno needs arcade cabinets in their homes or something. o.o If anyone finds super-cheap arcade cabinets, post them here? O_o Cuz’ I wanna see them. Are we running a tournament this week? I don’t care, it’s up to you guys. I’d like to run one and try the earlier start-up technique.
I’ve changed my mind. Weekly tournaments are not too much. They are not enough. Lets have tournaments like 4 nights a week!!
Word. I think Gary has the right idea. ;D Well, I guess we’ll just have casual this week.
Ill be there on sat from 830-1030
Awww, looks like I won’t be able to get OWNED in XX this weekend. Cry for me. :o
