Abel Wish List

Nah, if you’re gonna do that, you might as well make EX CoD -1, so Gief can’t punish.

If the plan is to trade meter for safety, at least make it work in his worst match-up…

EDIT- I’m not really knowledgeable enough to do a write-up for everybody. I honestly never took the time to really learn SF4. I just (kinda) know Abel.

Awww… At least you’re honest about it and don’t make a huge write up full of BS.

I think it was jchensor did a bunch of big write-ups on what all the characters need. They were really well done but now I have no idea where to find them.

I really dont buy this “One change make Abel way too good” argument.

A better AA(What i’ve advocated for, IMO FS), would’nt make him “too” good, he’s not perfect on the ground, most characters have the tools to beat em there(but they must be careful), most characters can out poke him easy. Its not like FS would be a Win button, it does’nt(and should’nt) beat cross-ups and it leaves Abel Stationary and vunurable, on a miss and it does have the reach of SRK, Trust kick or Guacamole. But it should more reliable and should’nt trade with hits.

Abel is 4-6(and some evens) with most of the cast with at least 2 Mount Kilimanjaro climbing match-ups, i dont think a FS buff would make em godly. Hell it does’nt even help the Gief/Akuma fights.

I like it, but i’m a fruit

They were certainly well thought out, but I’m not sure even he would agree with all his proposed changes anymore. He also doesn’t play all the characters, so some of his suggestions leave you with a “huh?”. He was willing to debate them, though, so they were good reads, but I think they’re outdated now.

Abel does have good AA, and I personally feel he goes 5-5 with most of the cast with a couple 4-6s and then the two 3-7s

Yeah, and for you to call him a defensive character makes no sense to me either.

His offense is >>>>>> his defense.

That is why the Abel mirror match is so nasty…two characters with HUGE offensive arsenal and very little strong defensive tools (except the roll, but that is just an evasion move and to do it so you can’t be thrown costs meter).

1100 health, mixups for days, a killer command grab, ex armor option on his COD, and a fantastic crossup.

He takes less damage than most of the cast.

I think Abel loses the majority of his fights on paper.

I also think Abel is one of those characters where paper doesn’t matter as much. It’s like A-Bison in CvS2… You can say he loses a match… but then again, he has a combo that can do 65% from anywhere (more, closer to the corner), so even if he “loses” a fight, he’s only one slip up away from winning, and he has the tools to create that.

Abel is the same. He doesn’t have paint the fence, but once he gets in, and has hit opponent flustered, I don’t care if it’s 5-5, 6-4, 4-6… whatever… if the Abel is on his shit, he can do a ton of damage really quickly. You can’t account for that in a match-up chart. Like, I think the Abel/Chun match is 3.5-6.5… But what I really think about the match is that Chun out does him from all angles of the screen, in almost all situations. But… Abel can cause some serious problems if he manages to get her knocked down and get her flustered.

So…

Giving Abel better tools to land knockdown (like being able to link Low Strong) or taking away other characters ability to successfully bring the fight to Abel (like buffing his AA/reversal game), would turn a fight, where Abel is at a disadvantage, but can melee at any point, into a fight where Abel fights a character evenly, and when he lands something, that is no longer that hard to land, he can go into this overdrive mode, that other characters can’t.

That just seems dumb to me.

EX roll is still throwable, it’s just invincible to strikes on the first frame instead of the 5th or 6th frame.

If EX roll was totally invincible to strikes and throws, it’d be stupid good.

It still wouldn’t be as good as Akuma’s teleport

My bad, I thought that the bonus from using the EX version of the roll was throw invulnerability only.

I guess it just comes from the way I play him. If I don’t wait for my opponent to make a mistake, I just get lit up. I’ve tried playing him as a balls to the wall character and I, personally, can’t do it. I take way too much damage when I’m aggressive with him. I know it’s probably a very wrong view of the character that I have, but it comes from personal experience.

Should I have just stuck with Ken? Probably, since I’ve used him since SFII. But I wanted to branch out for once and I picked Abel because I liked the guy’s look.

Abel is fine. If I had to pick a few things it would be make both the low and high versions of COD linkable to one another so it’s this mixup monster. As it stands low is pretty much useless no matter what.

Also maybe loosen up c.lk -> s.hp link. I think it’s a 1 frame and other than that and f.mk->s.hp->COD I can’t really think of another way to combo into COD without just hitting a raw HP or something. I don’t get why we can’t c.lp->c.mp->COD, but whatever.

Abel is a tough character to play well. He doesn’t have anything mashable and he doesn’t have anything to really get him out of trouble that changes momentum…sure he can roll out, but its not a momentum changer like a DP that knocks down.

What I do with him is try to play smart and conservative for the first round. I never spend meter in the first round…if I can win, then I go into the second round with a huge advantage, if I lose, then I am still set for the second round to swing my way and hopefully have the other guy second guessing his strats.

I play the same way with chun, round one is for building meter and feeling out the opponent.

See, I know what my main problem is when I play. I don’t realize how much damage I am usually taking until I happen to notice that, hey, I’m at a sliver of health. If I’m not conservative with Abel, I end up KOed before I get a chance to really assess the situation.

But if I play defensive (IE: Smart), I can usually win with Abel. I just get too damn impatient when I play and suddenly, it’s the “Eckert Getting Lit Up” show.

LOL I feel you on that…some characters with high damage output like Akuma can shave your health down pretty quick.

I watch my own meters, but I probably watch my opponent’s meters more than my own…tells me what options they have.

maybe he should have a crouching normal move that works on blanka’s electricity at close range >(

Small request, but I’ve always had some problems with the Sky Fall command. It’s just too much like tornado throw. I know it’s not a huge problem but it then again, it shouldn’t be too hard to change.

FS comes out too often for me, if I’m doing a jump in and my stick happens to graze downforward before I do the CoD, bam, FS.
