Abel Moveset and Attributes

Ok, back to the option select thing

I figured out a (semi) useful option select on opponent wakeup. I say semi useful, because it involves close standing jabs, which whiff on most crouchers :frowning: if Abels close standing short was chainable, this thing would actually be WAY useful. It goes something like this…

cr.lk xx f+lp+mk xx f+lp

On block you get cr.lk xx st.lp xx st.lp – you can (read: must) tack on a st.lk here… the reason for this is so you cancel out of the second hit of st.lp, which is a huge pain in the ass. From this, you can mix up into f+mk, lk wheel kick, sweep, you know… normal shenanigans

On backdash, you get whiff cr.lk, f+mk xx dash. Normal shenanigans apply

This is really easy to hit confirm, and can be useful when trying to put on the pressure. No one likes to be up close to Abel (except maybe Gief) so naturally they should be looking to jump or back-dash out… This finally gives Abel a decent way to get in on back dashers without having to guess so much… Tested this on Chun (f+mk connects, no time to block) so I can see this becoming useful, at least in a limited sense

Any of the senior Abels care to share their comments on this ?

My initial thoughts are that it’d be quite limited in use, but could be useful on the taller guys, as crouch blocking essentially gets people out of jail for free… if close st.lk was chainable, I could see it being a REALLY good option select… SSF4 buff please ?

This might be old news, but neutral j.lk can cross up if the opponent say dashes/walks underneath you.

yeah thats old news… but the question is(never have the time to test stuff lately)… what is the best thing to do after that j.lk connects, block?

If you land l.lk you can combo st.hp, if its blocked you can go for a tick TT attempt or w/e. Really good jump move in some matchups (specially fuerte)

You can combo s.hp from j.lk? o_O

Or did you mean j.lk, c.lk?

S.hp is 4 frames. Cr.lk is 5. S.hp is more likely to combo than cr.lk.

Is there something wrong with the frame data for s.lp?

It says it’s 4 frames startup (same as s.fp) but I’ve NEVER been able to combo it from step kick on non-ch.

Is there some buffering going on with s.fp that makes it link from step kick or is there something wrong with the frame data? Could it be 5 frames?

Abel’s infinite on Chun and Rufus relies on the fact that s.lp is 4 frames.

Versus some characters the s.lp whiffs on the first active frame because of their hit animation. For example, versus Ryu.

you can combo s.hp off a neutral j.lk, you have to do it right as you land so it connects though.

1st post updated with info I had in HAV’s match up thread, but I feel it goes better here.

Why can I not evade Blanka’s ambiguous ultra after a forward throw with EX roll? I get the reversal message, I lose an EX stock, but I get hit. It’s happened a LOT. I know sometimes I may get EX wheel kick because of the change of sides, but surely at least ONE time EX roll would come out.

You are messing up somehow. No real explanation other than you are getting a wheel kick or a non EX roll.

From my experience, if the blanka is good enough to time that ultra, you can never ex roll out… so i’ll try to not get thrown when i dont have enough health to eat the chip damage.

That makes little sense, you should be able to, has anyone tried in training to see what motion you have to do?

I think the problem is the game prioritizes wheel kicks over ex rolls, and that ambiguous ultra sometimes seems to almost hit on both sides, so it’s very difficult to get a roll. Sometimes I’d pump the EX roll like mad, I see reversal and I lose a stock, so that means I got a wheel kick instead since EX roll is 100% hit invul throughout its duration.

try mashing qcb, qck +k lol. What’s the set up? Just forward throw then ultra? I’ll mess around with it later. You ever try EX TT?

The trick to getting the EX Roll is to input the qcf before they even cross you up. You can input the qcf hella early and then do KK later. I abuse this with Seth so that if you ever cross me up/ambiguous crossup on my wakeup, I teleport away.

I find ex roll loses to well timed meaty attacks and I’ve never managed to ex roll a properly executed blanka throw -> ultra before.

thanks for the tip, i’ll try to ask a local blanka player to do the throw meaty ultra thing(cant use training mode because no matter how hard I try, its never as meaty as i wanted it to be)

Yup, late inputs ftw, just like Gief can body splash 360 in the air, wait a sec 360+ppp to ultra. SF4 is gay :D.
