Abel General Discussion

Yeah, it’s been annoying me. It’s still good but you don’t get that easy pressure/mixup if they block. You’re almost forced to block after a blocked step kick.

Anybody who sleeps on Abel is an idiot. The man is a fucking wall made out of s.lk and j.fp. My main complaint is that TT isn’t throw invuln anymore but as was mentioned jab TT beats most throw attempts clean.

You can pick any character with a braindead way to get in to get a magic series launcher, then bring in abel and step kick x fp x 2 hits of cod into the corner. That means for the tiny risk of a jab from rolento/vega/any other OP poke you can have your opponent carried into the corner from nearly anywhere on the screen, delivered into the loving arms of abel’s great footsies and mixups.

There’s a huge lack of tech in this forum and it’s disappointing. I don’t want to be the first person to let their dirty tricks out of the bag, but let me tell you that Abel has some filthy tricks. I’m not trying to be a dick and brag about secret technology or anything, just trying to inspire the abel community to do better, because this forum is weak as hell compared to the other characters.

it pretty much reverses the situation from before, i feel like now after I step kick, if blocked, I have to crouch tech, because coupled with the aforementioned TT not having grab invincibility, you just got in but you are in a baaad position

counterhit cl roundhouse ground bouncing into a stepkick combo is all i got for slick tricks.

here is something my friend wrote to me on another forum:

forward roll wakeup option is really really really dangerous against some (maybe a lot?) of characters. I played an ibuki today that would get a knockdown, then use her command dash as I would be either standing or rolling, and doing it so that he’d stop ambiguously on top of where I’d get up from a roll, and then jab me into a combo, and it was wrecking me. Abel should be able to do the exact same thing. Also some characters can basically prevent you from rolling completely by fucking up your input at the last second. Hwoarang does it by getting a “hard” knockdown with hk hunting hawk. it groundbounces, but he can’t follow up on his own. This means they can’t quickstand it. Then while they’re stuck waiting to either slow wakeup or roll, you do 2 light hunting hawks; first one gets you right next to their body, second one goes over them right at the time when they’d need to input a roll command. It crosses them up just before that time and makes their holding forward be the wrong direction, and they don’t get a roll.

I agree with resres, Abel is pretty dirty in this game, some of you just need to change the way you’re thinking about the character, he isn’t meant to be played sf4 style.

In st.lk he has one of the best ways to get into launcher in the game! Fantastic tool to have. Step kick isn’t the mixup/pressure tool it was, but now it’s one of the best footsie tools/punish tools, because it’s an easy confirm into st.hp which is a great way to tag your partner in and get some really good damage.

Abels good in that his combos are short meaning damage scaling isn’t as big an issue for him so he can tack on good damage with a lot of characters. Wheel kick does suck in an sf4 sense but it’s a great way to tag in your partner if you need to get out.

I don’t agree that you have to block after a blocked step kick all the time though, you can still catch people with delayed st.hp to catch their pre-jump frames, so it’s pretty useful frame trap wise and again can lead to good damage.

Also, like I said before, step kick on hit is so easy to confirm into really good damage if you have the meter, if not, still an easy confirm into CoD. Also here’s a little tip, if you equip any gems with the 3 special moves activations, one change of direction combo will nail those gems. So have a think about that.

I can’t believe none has mentioned his GODLIKE alpha counter, seriously it might be one of the best in the game. It shuts down so much safe stuff is not even funny, and it even has some dirty applications like, you can block bison’s ex psycho and do a late a.counter, what happens is: the counter will autocorrect and chase bison as he travels in a dumb ball of purple flame, and you can punish with a far.LK combo.

Also you can autocorrect his EX tackle vs ex psycho but its incredibly hard to do.

Got some mixup stuff to show with Abel, it’s really difficult to put your opponent in ambigous situations in this game using marseilles roll, but it’s definitely possible. Still though, it involves good reads. Will post a video later.

Actually I was wrong, using tag cancels there’s some sick stuff you can do.

Just got to play some matches the other day with Abel, it’s kinda hard to adapt from using that stepkick, but it’s getting there.
Also worth mentioning you can link Cr.mp after F.MK for more dmg (then chain into Cr.HP or w/e) instead of st.mp. It’s a tougher link (think SF4 f.mk, st.hp timing almost). I think this gives you 60 instead of 40 damage (if you do the 1 hit from st.mp, and gives you 1 less hit if you do the 2 hits).

Pretty good “punish” combo i’ve been playing with for a short time is** (j.hp/hk), F.mk, cr.mp, cr.hp -wait- EX Tackle, f.mk, st.hp F.sky**. Does like ~440 with jump in and around 400 I think it was without (need to confirm). You can probably do more if you are good at charging. Because if you time it right, you can cancel the first hit of the cr.hp to EX tackle and get additional juggles (or do st.mp 2 hits to cl.hp cancel to tackle). Or Just follow up the EX tackle with St.hp (cant be done if you did the full cr.hp) to Tag into w/e beastly combo with another char :smiley:
Another pretty decent punish combo without meter I found is; if they do like a SRK infront of you on wakeup or smth, you can do** cr.fp xx lk.roll, f.mk, f.mk, st.hp xx F.Sky**, does around 340 (396 with jump HK/P) damage with no meter. (note you will be switching sides on most chars so be ready for that when doing f.mk). It’s probably not a “finished” combo, you can probably figure out more from that!

Footsie-wise I can’t say much, because I haven’t been playing that much, but st.lk as you say seems really really good.

well since it hasn’t been posted: Abel destroys every grappler in this game from a neutral position. I’ve played so many Hugo/Gief teams, all you need to do is tap them once, get full screen and start charging breathless (dash cancelling when necessary), the only safe way for them to get in is to slowly walk forward and jump on reaction, free ex shoulder is safe on block so you can let that rip once in a while and then back out while pressuring with s.lk and reacting to jumpins with a early j.fp it’s not that it’s a perfect defense but it can throw them off their game and the only way for either of those characters to safely get in takes SO LONG that by the time they’re in the game is over. Hugo can do his retard jump fullscreen and you get a free s.lk into whatever you want, gief can green hand and you get free ex. shoulder into whatever you want. I haven’t seen enough MAR-DOOK to test this shit on him but he doesn’t seem particularly quick and that stupid armored punch thing he has isn’t scary at all. Nobody really uses King for footsies but the only thing he really has that’s that scary is like ex. konvict kick or his little dodge dance into lariat. So yeah.

I’ll also throw this in: If you knock down hugo and walk back and forth in s.lk range while he’s waking up a lot of players will throw something out, usually a slow normal that you can grab with a quick almost meaty jab TT.

hehehe, maybe soon, don’t want to get baited into letting everything go in the first week when it’s working out so well ;). I focused on the gief/hugo stuff purely for us SF4 Abel veterans, it’s so awesome to be able to take gief down free (as long as he’s not on top of you, for the record that situation still sucks dick in this game LOL).

One thing I will say is that this game should not be played like sf4 at all and once you look at the game differently Abel has some mixups that would make Dormammu proud.

I started to incorporate shoulder charges into my far range game to mess with people after I had more experience with the game, but I didn’t even think about doing that against grappler characters. Thanks for the suggestion dude, I’ll have make good use of it.

ha, saving stuff uh? I thought we were better than that, Its sad to pick 1 char that you like and go to a forum where there’s little info or people complining about how much has he changed from SSF4.

If we want to get Abel to the next lv, we need to stop complaining and start figuring out things.

imo no point in playing Abel right now, game is too broken to play a charater that isn’t top tier

just pick rufus/raven/kazuya/ryu/vega and wait for the next version
