Abel Beginner Thread: "It takes more than brute strength..."

I’m talking out my @ss here because I’m less qualified, but gotta learn to block that stuff, and ex roll if you can(Pray he doesn’t catch on to this lol) Other than you have to try as hard as possible not to get knocked down (easier said than done I know) same thing goes for Ibuki which I find even more infuriating online. Now I’ll let a better player get down to the specifics. I personally try to Air to Air his high flying shenanigans as much as possible with J Fierce and try to work my way on his BS, but ussually he will find a way to blow me up :stuck_out_tongue:

what was the reason for nerfing the recovery of abel normal roll? i am not an abel player but i am trying to understand the character better. thanks

U dont need to do FS, which is pretty unsafe, but if it works for you, well, go for it.
After a blocked step kick u are at +1, u can just continue anyway with close fierce, u will beat nearly anything ur opponent is trying, and jumping is one of this things (jumping needs 4 startup frames?).
I do close fierce most of the times, and I hit a lot of opponents, even if my stepkick was blocked, leading into a full COD FADC combo, even without the 1 frame link in this case  .

yeah i wouldnt take the risk with falling sky either. close fierce gets them if they try to jump out.

Yeah I don’t do this alot per se but I’ll take the risk sometimes lol

Will meaty crouching strong stuff ex messiah?

No, ex messiah is a reversal attack with much startup invulnerability, probably one of the best in the game?

kk thx i wasnt sure if the startup invincibility was as significant as other reversals

What do I do after a hard knockdown? Everyone online loves wake-up shoryu, and it’s clear trying to command throw on wake-up is no wokring.

What do I do on wake-up for reversals, get-away, get-off-me, etc.

What are best pokes and confirms?

If he loves to wakeup shoryuken dont press buttons after the roll, just block, or do another roll after a roll to let it whiff and punish hard!!! Until he doesnt do it anymore, that’s all you can do. 5 Frame reversals can be safejump easily which is another possibility against sagat, cammy and deejay and co.
Abel doesnt have get away moves, on wakeup he is kind of a punchingball, you just have to block. Good thing is, Abel cant be safejumped when he has meter, use Ex TT, which is strike invincibel. You can also use EX Cod to absorb the jumping attack and strike him.
Another thing, which is hard to do, I only to it offline is armor cancelling ex cod into TT, which uses 0! meter, you have to kara cancel the first frame of ex cod into a special or an ultra attack, works really nice and isnt that hard, I can do it consistently offline (But only on wakeup against kind of meaty safejumps or standing meaties).

How to combo light punch after Step Kick?

I can do step kick then strong punch but not the other.

you can only combo cr.lp after step kick on counter hit

how should I be handling my wakeups? I find that the biggest problems I have when playing as Abel is when opponents just hurl pressure at me (never ending blockstun, jumpins while I am waking up). I never seem to know whether I should be blocking, going for a certain AA, or when to properly use TT

in general, just learn to block, BUT don’t get too comfortable Just blocking. Blocking is important to make it a point to your opponent that you won’t be opened up free. But if you block too much, you are never gonna be able to start anything. Regardless, if the guy is jumping on Your wakeup, best bet is to block properly and not get knockdown again. If the jump in is badly timed, you can always ex roll out(you can always ex roll out, but if jumpin is timed well, he/she can os a grab). After blocking though, learn to grasp what he wants to do: is he always going for tight string after jumpin, goin for frame traps, etc and do ex moves depending on that. Most of the times though, if you are good enough at blocking and AA, the pressure should stop after a few blocks unless the guy is goin ham.

excellent help

Trying to read this entire forum for tips, but still coming up with questions as I go.

What about when you have a character just neutral jump attacking you on your wakeup? I fought a Cody that would just njFP then either do it again or go for a tick throw. Adon does this to me a lot too :frowning:

And when should I be selecting U1 rather than U2?

and another thing I am noticing is U2 doesn’t absorb the one hit sometimes. I’ll do it to get through a fireball (sometimes when on my wakeup, sometimes when it’s come out of their hand, etc), and sometimes I get through, and other times it stuffs me. Que pasa?

If the neutral jump is a timed safe jump to hit meaty you have to block on wakeup. You can attempt to armor cancel TT/EX roll to punish/get out.

If they safe jump you on your wakeup and do it again you can st.hp to anti air, mp/ex falling sky, cr.mk, ex roll, or just block.

U1 vs U2 is a subjective choice. U1 is guaranteed damage off a hit confirm and punishes certain characters moves, U2 is not guaranteed and works well as a punisher for certain character moves.

U2 was nerfed in ver2012, it no longer has armor during the dash animation.

I am having issues plinking. I saw Abel do the forward medium kick into dash into close heavy punch. So i am having trouble plinking the forward medium kick into heavy punch. There seems to be a dash inbetween them. If anybody knows, what are the exact button inputs to make this work???

f + mk, f, hp (plinked with mp for example)

if you dont know what plinking is, there are a lot of youtube videos about it

Does j.mk -> cr.hp still work? I am having a lot of trouble with this one. I’ve gotten the cr.hp to connect a few times, but only when I throw out the mk REALLY late. Am I doing something wrong or is that how that combo’s supposed to work?

Cross up mk has only so much hit stun… and Abel’s cr.hp having as much start up as it does… it’s not a link one should focus to much on
