Youtubepoop.com does YouTube chart blitzkrieg
September 12th, 2007
Yesterday, Youtubepoop.com site admin Conrad Slater uploaded his tribute to everyone, a Youtube Poop music video, in an attempt to conquer the Most Discussed of all time chart at YouTube. The video was posted somewhat anonymously in the new YouChewPoop youtube account, created as an official presence for the YTP community on youtube.
Members of the youchewpoop forum jumped at the challenge, relentlessly leaving comments and posting links on other sites as a way to draw attention to the video. In the first 24 hours the video managed to reached 10 thousand views and 1000 comments, meaning that if everyone gave the same amount of effort each day, it would take 39 days to get to the top of the Most discussed of all time chart.
In an interesting turn of events the video jumped straight in the front page of the Most Responded to of all time chart, way ahead of the two YTP fad videos (which the tribute also refers to) DIS IS A VOL-CAY-NO! and UNFITTED MUSIC, which had been racing to reach the front page over the last few weeks. Perhaps frustrated by the videos slow but methodical rise, forum members brilliantly decided that a blitzkrieg manoeuvre would be far more effective by making most of their own videos (even non poops) video responses to the tribute.
This had the extra impact of getting the video in to the Today and This Week charts of Most Discussed, Most Viewed, Top Favourites and Most Responded would will no doubt be a massive head start.
It remains to be seen how great the fall off of commitment will be, one sceptic rightfully pointing out that his would be at least 10 times easier to achieve if MrSimon uploaded it. MrSimon himself, who has been responsible for a large number of fads, (and recently damned those making tributes to himself) dismissed such comments and is joining in like everyone else.
Unlike previous videos which have made the charts the video contains no easy to emulate fads which can be easily emulated and instead depends upon catchphrases and memes both from Youtube Poop and from other communities including 4chan, YTMND and even YouTube itself. It is hoped that in this way the video will seem familiar to it new viewers and shamelessly imply that YouTube Poop is an integral part of internet culture; thereby also addressing the current malaise of comedic cd-i cut-scene sentence mixing which threatens to sink the community.
With an estimated 2 million clips being added to youtube everyday, the charts are an important way of raising awareness of YouTube Poop and creating a potentially far larger passive audience of non poop making viewers who can join in this new campaign without having to make a video themselves - something which the previous videos all depended upon.
