So I’ve been trying to get into the local FG scene around my town. Problem is, the only scene that isn’t an hour long drive away is Tekken. So today I decided to go and pick up TTT2 to try it out.<div><br></div><div>Well, I’ve been messing around in it for a few hours and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. This is the first Tekken I’ve played in a long while and I’m suprised at how much I enjoy playing this. However, I’m basically clueless to anything about 3D fighters outside of DOA, so I have a lot of questions about it. </div><div><br></div><div>1. What would most consider to be the main Tekken forum?</div><div><br></div><div>2. Are any of these characters not considered tourney legal?</div><div><br></div><div>3. Could someone explain the basics of blocking mechanics? I’m not at all used to this “hold nothing” to block concept. </div><div><br></div><div>4. I’d appreciate if someone could also explain some of the important terminology unique to this game, as well if someone could maybe give me an example combo and then translate it, per se. If it helps, most of my FG knowledge is based in Street Fighter. </div><div><br></div><div>5. What do I do on wakeup?</div><div><br></div><div>6. How do I do launchers or whatever they’re called?</div><div>That’s all that really comes to mind at this point…I would greatly appreciate any other basic concepts or pieces of advice that I should know as I try to get into this franchise. </div>
- Tekken Zaibatsu<br>2. All characters are legal. There was a time that DLC characters were banned, but this was because not everyone had them at the time.<br>3. Hold noting applies for high and mid blocking. It’s a mechanic in the game where you aren’t required to hold back to block. The same applies to just holding down to block lows. Otherwise, it’s the same as other fighting games.<br>4. Check Tekken Zaibatsu for this, but I’ll give you a primer. 1,2,3, and 4 refer to left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick respectively. N will stand for a neutral input on the stick - important for wavedashing characters. The ~ will stand for piano inputs like 1~2 is plinking the 1,2 input.<br>5. Depends on the situation and matchup. This is too indepth to answer concisely.<br>6. Launchers will depend on the character. Go through your favorite characters’ movelists to find the launchers. Also look for ones that launch on counter.<br>
Just to add…<br><br>3. “Neutral Guard” as we call it, can block some attacks, but not all… It’s still reliable to hold B (back) to block.<br><br>http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/wiki/Tekken_Tag_Tournament_2/System/Walking_Crouching_and_Blocking<br><br>4. Here’s our Legend: http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/wiki/Glossary<br><br>and here’s our Tekken Jargon: http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/wiki/Tekken_Jargon<br><br>5. <br><br><br>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4tt1bFxzNk<br><br>
Thanks for the response!<div><br></div><div>I’ve checked out Tekken Nation and Zaibatsu as well, however I like the layout for Tekken Nation more. Are both sites good or is Zaibatsu better?</div>
Tekken Nation is crap… don’t go there…<br><br>Seriously…<br><br>Too scrubby for their own good…<br><br>Tekken Zaibatsu, SRK Tekken and Neogaf Tekken communities will help you get better at this game… <br>
I see. I’ll check it out then. I’d really just prefer to get all of my info from here but Tekken seems relatively dead on here.
Yeah… true… It’s the same problem actually in Tekken Zaibatsu, since all the discussions happens in facebook groups (see Kor’s Tekken Academy) and stream chats (since they can get answers quicker than a forum would be)…<br><br>But it’s always active in the <a href=“http://www.tekkenzaibatsu.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=126702&perpage=20&pagenumber=1”>GGs thread</a>. Just get used to our culture there. We are more of a tough love group, just like the game itself will be tough on you. Most shoot down trolls to death, unforgiving to complainers yet helpful to newbies who are sincere to honing their game.<br>
Thanks! I’ll make sure to post in there. I guess this site has some kind of 2 day processing shit though… /
<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>TZ is rather notorious for not having their shit organized. That led me to never sign up for that site despite needing somewhere to learn the basics. - TekkenZaibatsu is the best source for this. Yes can be hard to navigate sometimes, but their threads if you bother to actually read through them which you should will provide you with what you need to get started.<br><br>2. None of the characters are banned from tourney’s<br><br>3. Basically you hold back to block standing for highs and mids, and downback to block lows. there is also neutral block where you don’t hold a direction for the same effect as stand blocking.<br><br>4. Some of the terminology you’ll want to know is that in Tekken we go by F,n,b,db,d,df,ub,u,uf for directional inputs. and 1,2,3,4, and now 5 for button inputs 1=left arm, 2=Right arm, 3=Left Leg, 4=Right Leg, and 5 for Tag Assaults (and tagging out your partner). The other ones to not are bound moves will be followed by a “B!” indicating that the opponent is bounded. and when the bound move is accompanied by ~5 TA! this means you’re bringing in your other character to do filler. W! means a wall hit. ~ means you slide the input, so hitting the button just slightly after the last. That’s pretty much what you need to know.<br><br>5. depending on the situation you can do many things. Most good players will stay on the ground until they are hit again, because while grounded opponents cannot launch you again. and after being hit you will be able to recover immediately. if you are face up feet towards you can press b+3+4 to do a spring kick on whiff it’s punishable, on block I believe it’s even, and on hit it causes a knockdown. you can also do f+1+2 for a hand spring does the same thing as b+3+4. while on the ground you can do 3 for a low, and 4 for a high getup kick. both are extremely punishable on block and whiff. d+4 is a toe tap, never use this one it’s very negative. pressing 1 you will side roll into the background and d+1 you will roll into the foreground. holding forward or back will roll in either direction. (never forward roll) and last if you are low on health or want to get your point character out and you or your partner have rage press 1+2+5 and they will tag crash sending in your other character to disrupt the opponent while your point character exits the arena.<br><br>6. Most characters have a df+2 launcher being 15f but of course every character has different launchers with different inputs all with different startup times and whatnot. you’ll find that out by learning your character and reading up on them. usually Launchers themselves are jab punishable, or themselves launch punishable. the one 90% of the cast has is a hopkick with either uf+4, or uf+3. <br><br><br>hope that helps. <br>

Please don’t get us wrong, we really do want to help people and make the most organized info there, but then life hits us. What we can do at times is just to answer questions to help people out.<br><br>Some of the organized info are there in the TZ wiki. It’s still work in progress and some characters have no info at all, but we’re trying to do our best to at least cover the basics…<br>
<P>Something that I would like to add to the whole “neutral” guard concept. </P>
<P>There are certain attacks that if you try and neutral guard the first hit will be blocked but follow on hits will go through. For example if you neutral guard Nina’s f+3 but do not hard guard the following attack it will go through and you will not block. Also when you hard guard it reacts diffrerently with some moves than it would if you neutral guard. For example if you neutral guard Paul’s deathfist you will be able to punish it with certain moves. However, if you hard guard Paul’s death fist you won’t be able to punish it with the same moves that you used for neutral guard.</P>
<P>Another Nina example would be:</P>
<P>hard guard death fist you have to do f~1+4(basically you have to hit and hold forward for 1 frame then press the 1+4 while still holding forward)</P>
<P>neutral guard deathfist you can b+1+4 from every distance other than max range</P>
Cool, I didn’t know about that detail on neutral guard. So I guess neutral guard reduces your block stun by a frame a two allowing you to punish certain attacks that’d otherwise be unpunishable? <br>

Martian how do you normally play a fighting game?
I found TZ to be full of unhelpful dicks so I quit using them. I miss being decent at Tekken.<br><br>Anyone want to help me get my game back? I feel like I’ve been floundering for months when I used to be able to hold my own at T6.<br>

People on TZ are dicks if:<div>1) You ask a question that’s been asked/answered a billion times and you just didn’t bother to read through a few pages to find some info.</div><div>2) You’re cocky and make claims of being pretty good</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I’m sure there are a lot more that will get you an insta-troll from someone but those two standout out pretty far to me.</div>
