“Having different opinions” does not extend to espousing or/and defended bigotry and bigoted posistions.
So because your opinion on what is acceptable is different from mine, I’m more flawed? Hmmm ur cool bro
Lol since when were you declared the King who decides where and where not opinions can extend to when it comes to subjective matters?
Please tell me why homophobia is acceptable.
Please tell me why sexism is acceptable.
Please tell me why racism is acceptable.
Please tell me why anti-semitism is acceptable.
Please tell me, I am dying to hear why you seem to believe that holding opinions that any of the above is okay, is somehow acceptable.
This is hardly a “subjective” matter, there can be no denying that Aris’ behaviour caused great discomfort for the victim, nor can it be denied that it wasn’t misogynistic, unless of course you believe that sexual harrassment is okay?
Lets ignore the first question seeing how homophobia does not mean what you are trying to make it mean.
Now the rest of them because sexist, and racist jokes are funny with friends and stuff.
If I can laugh at my skin color and jokes about it then others should to.
Actually I wouldnt say that, though that would be your argument .
“This (insert category of subject) joke/statement offends me and everyone should also believe it’s offensive because I do”
Like looking at a mirror backwards, isnt it boy?
If someone makes it clear that they are offended/are uncomfortable by certain aspects of your behaviour, the onus is on you to change, not for them just to “deal with it”.
If someone made a homophobic comment about my sexuality, I wouldn’t just “accept it”, because that would be in someway, internalising and accepting the bigotry against myself. Everyone should call out bigotry whereever and whenever they see it.
If you want to make snarky little jokes with your friends, go do so, but when you do so in front of stranger or people who you have no knowledge of their past experiences with discrimination, then you should be called out, because perhaps then you might learn.
Arguing an abstract topic such as right and wrong that depends on social constructs and expectations through our culture and upbringing? Cool.
It’s amusing to see people preach respect our differences and then get all pissy about someone thinking differently or exhibiting behavior they don’t agree with.
I understand your point, and perhaps it is a tad unfair of me to expect rapid, social change within the Fighting Game Community, but I still believe that bigotry of any kind is wrong, because at the end of the day we are all human beings. People. We should not be discriminated nor belittled because of race, gender, sexuality, culture, religion, heritage etc.
Again, I do understand the resistance to change.
Replace “the Fighting Game Community” with “people” to look like less like an Kotaku journalist.
Oh man, now I look like one :<
Heh. My own opinions on Kotaku are pretty negative, they’re hardly a decent source of news, on any gaming-related subjected.
This type of talk doesn’t just exist in the fighting game community, the INTERNET is full of sh!tc0ck. Some people are sh!tc0ck in real life. Hello Aris! He’s like a bearded fighting game howard stern…without the reality check that howard sterns show is well…staged.
I am well aware of this.
Was a general reply, I didn’t actually read anything you wrote. I’m just saying I LITERALLY thought I was watching a scripted Howard Stern bit when I saw the video of the harassment. I was half expecting him to ask her to take her shirt off and bark like a seal.
Man this thread is still blowing up? Instead of arguing over small things that most likely won’t change a person’s opinion. Why don’t we all go out and set examples of how we want to better/improve the community. Because that is what we all want right?
I do recall DjWheat making a similar point, AceKillah. The problem comes when there are people who refuse to see that it is wrong and they will continue to bring our community down, like it or not.
Well after a refreshing shower Im back to battle, HAVE AT YOU! Jus kiddin, now
You talk about wanting things to change, you talk about people who are offended shouldnt have to just deal with it, and all these heroic statements, but lets see if I can apply that to a very real situation to show that all you want is change in **YOUR **favor.
I remember there used to be a time where a black man speaking informally(casually) to a white guy was offensive to the white guy and the white guys around him. Of course the black man is being offended by being devalued but my point is, should the black guy change because of his offense towards the white man or should the white man change? I ask this cuz you seem to act like some kind of god in where you can indicate who should do the changes and who should react a certain way according to people being offended. I mean cuz in the situation I just presented you, both parties could be as equally justified when it comes to who should change.
So this whole thing about “resisting to change” in which I feel you’re using that statement in a condescending manner is nothing more than a man whining
“WAAAH WAAAH I DONT LIKE THE WORLD I WANT IT TO CHANGE TO HOW I WANT IT”… So all your arguments just seem to me, in essence a selfish attempt to turn things to your personal utopia.
It is clear that you aren’t really interested in any sort of debate, but I shall respond despite your attitude.
In the context of your “example”, the Black person would have every right to be offended by the dehumanising attitude of the white person. I would have no problem with the white person changing, because in this context the white person is being racist, not the black person, who is the subject of bigotry and not the one being bigoted.
If you want to dismiss my concerns as “whining” then perhaps you should take a step back and leave this topic, because it’s obvious that you are only being contrarian.
I’m not the one being selfish; I am a white, Bi-sexual, Athiest Male. I am hardly a persecuted minority, ignoring my sexuality.
The only racial discrimination (based upon my heritage or assumed heritage, not skin colour) I’ve had is anti-english insults directed at me by my fellow Scots, who assumed I was english because of my accents.
I could happily wallow in my own privilege (of not being the victim of sexism) and let others be the victims of bigotry, beyond homophobia, but I realise that in itself would be selfish of me and unjust.
What I want isn’t selfish. It is humane and it is personally both disappointing and depressing that you fail to grasp this, especially when this so-called utopia wouldn’t exactly benefit me either.
You talk like everything is subjective, and both sides are just different opinions, but you’re wrong.
There is equality and inequality, politeness and rudeness, being nice and being mean, being friendly and being hostile, being an asshole and being decent.
There’s no question that the former is preferable to the latter. Arguing otherwise is like saying being stabbed is preferable to not being stabbed. Sure, there are some masochists out there, but thats no excuse to start stabbing people.
Oh My Lord…
Fucking CryBaby White Knights still got the thread rolling over this conflict.
And this is a fact, Fighting Game Community is one of the most Rawest gaming community’s. The majority of us like to barbarically joke around because its amusing to us. However, were not at all violently serious about it, or really mean to drastically effect anyone feelings.
What many of you are somewhat beginning to make it seem like.
In that case tell Chris Matrix to become more mature and stop yelling out " Thats My Bitch " whenever he gets pumped up for storm.
Or Tell Yipes & Chris to stop saying " Here comes the pussy" when they see Felicia Go In.
Or tell Mr.Quotes to stop yelling " OH MY FUCKING GOD ", at every hype momment.
Thats who we are, were Individuals that express individual feelings in gaming. Some of us may be Barbarically hardcore about it. Some of us may take a more settle hype approach like James Chen for example. Where all different but in the same community and at the end of the day we will always have one thing in common…enjoying fighting games. Outside viewers need to understand that or fuck off.
STOP TRYING TO CHANGE US AS A WHOLE. ITS PART OF WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL .
How about letting them see what we are / were for along time. See the crazy fun & amusing times we have with the FG’s we play and the vairtey of people we play with.
Lastly, DROP THE FUCKING ARIS vs. MIRANADA sexual harassment arugment and arguments that broke of from it. Its been said before they both were dumb for what they did on a Gaming Show. Drop it
Im sure there both probably not even taking it as seriously now as we are it this thread right now.
