Isn’t it sad then that these mainstream review websites will likely cite it as valid counter argument?
Giantbomb, Kotaku, etc. all don’t have any clue when it comes to covering Fighting Games in a positive light. It’s ridiculous. Having to preface an article explaining about your skills in the genre doesn’t justify you publishing it, either.
The shitstorm following this instead of Cross Assault is no surprise whatsoever. Please notify me whenever the scrub mentality is dissuaded everywhere in the gaming industry, not just on SRK.
1st off, I teabag and taunt all the time. get @ me.
second, the media is stupid so i don’t really care for what “field days” they will have with this. I will continue to ignore them until it actually has a negative impact. I agree that racial slurs and sexist remarks should be something that’s not tolerated towards people, but what about the game?
For example, what If im watching a guy and a girl play MvC2 and shes playing storm and hes playing sentinel. I’ve got money on the guy, so I’m rooting for him. In the hype of the moment, I say “slap this bitch” referring to storm. Should I have to watch my language and worry about hurting someones feelings, despite the fact that storm is always called the bitch in marvel? That’d be really fucking boring if so
I agree. Ultimately I think many people who are having the “Wtf? The FGC is filled with rainbows of acceptance!” are likely 1) not part of a minority group themselves (or at least a minority with respect to the FGC), or 2) have accepted the questionable parts of the community as “all in good fun” and not something that will change, and they’ve thus become oblivious to it.
I mean, I am a member of such a minority and I have pretty thick skin. I stick around because I love fighting games. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that if I had a nickel for every sexist/homophobic/racist comment I overheard on streams, in person, etc, that I would be a very rich guy right now.
Taunting and teabagging online is your prerogative, i won’t play you simple as that, no big deal.
In terms of our “color” commentary, that depends on how you want to be looked at by a public eye and if you care. For me? I’d say the same as you mainly because 1.) I know its referring to the fact that I want Sentinel to beat up Storm and 2.) I’m not talking about the players I’m talking about the in-game characters which obviously you are too.
The problem is an outsider would not know this. The extremely sensitive outsider could say “Wow these ignorant people condone beating women!” Does this matter at all? Not really to us. But if these “scandals” continue and the media continues to shit on the FGC the way they are, I can easily see Capcom, Namco, and others backing away slowly and stop supporting the FGC. Fewer fighting games, no more half a million donated to tournaments, no more asking the community for input. To avoid PR disasters they will simply stop making the games we love and it will become another dark age.
Again I’m just speculating, this may not happen, or it may happen but not for another 10 years who knows. I just know that as much as I would love to say “SLAP DAT BITCH UP!” I don’t think the community would be “boring” without being able to say that. Its not necessary for me to enjoy being part of this community and for me I have no problem evolving to become more accepting to newcomers and outsiders.
I don’t think you understand how this business works. It does not matter if Capcom or Namco know our community (they do obviously). It matters what **others **think. If millions of people who read Kotaku’s article and takes it as fact says “Wow Capcom and Namco support this racist sexist stuff? I’m not buying their games anymore” what do you think will happen? Giant losses for both companies. In turn they will act like they never knew us and make non-fighting games to compensate. It would be a PR disaster for them. What if an investor catches wind of this and thinks Capcom supports it?
If I’m not mistaken I could’ve sworn Capcom had a press release saying they had nothing to do with the comments made etc something like that? That’s just the beginning stages.
glad people could finally find a reason to not buy Capcom games since they certainly weren’t ever going to do it as a result of the games themselves being bad since everyone is stupid
I think the point is that “SLAP THAT BITCH UP” is sexist regardless of whether it’s aimed at the game or the player. The same would be true if people thought it were colourful to refer to Deejay or Dudley by the n-word. At the end of the day if this the only form of “hype” the community can muster, it doesn’t really bode well for the future.
Still beats Fahey and Totilo though. Nothing beats the thrill of exploring a new fighting game out in the market than when you make it sound like learning a foriegn language to your readers:
I disagree with Aris’ actions, but I do not disown him as a player. I am guilty of being humored in the first day or two of the show. But, when I saw Super_Yan’s expression in day two or three, then I knew that it was not funny anymore. I will take it as a valuable lesson and hope others do aswell. We can be a closely knit community that requires more than a knock on the door to embrace new players without so much insulting.
What makes my stomach bitter about the whole situation. Is that if it was an FPS reality show with the same amount of freedom to those involved. It would be many times worse and most gaming media would turn a blind eye to it. The FPS community is much more known to have unacceptable behaviour than the fighting game community.
About The Author: I began in the local arcade about seven years ago. I entered into the fire of the arcade culture and came out one of the best players in my area. I do not have tough skin and often came home from the arcade with tears in my eyes. However, I kept on playing and keep on to this day, because I love fighting games.
Wait what…Where’s that Jackie Chan picture with hands and things. This article is not throwing Aris on the bus. Aris threw Aris under the bus by not acting like a grown ass man. A bunch of video game outlets decided that it was ok to throw the rest of with him when it wasn’t our actions and it wasn’t at one of our events. That comment is a very tiny explanation of the behavior here: people get made fun of for physical appearance on a daily basis. A woman being made fun of for her physical appearance is being no treated no different than the rest of us.
there’s a big difference between saying to a chick “Hey yo, your ass is more pancake than anything IHOP could put together” and “If you lose this game I’m gonna smell you and say your boyfriend’s name.” Same with being dumb enough to be asking her shit that the stream monsters like cup size and other stuff. Dude got caught up in a lot of hype and made a lot of bad choices . I don’t know him personally, so I can’t say whether or not he is an asshole or a good guy that just fucked up in a very public arena by doing something dumb.
But to simply take one random event and force it as a defining trait of this culture is wildly irresponsible of Ars Technica, Kotaku, Giant Bomb and the rest of the echo chamber.
