You misunderstand. I’m not saying people can’t say awkward/offensive/whatever things. I’m saying, when you’re commentating for a MAJOR, you should probably keep a little leash on saying those things. Seriously. When I get weirded out, it’s WEIRD.
Someone on the front page said it best when they compared this to basketball.
You have the guys on the street playing pick-up games and think they’d be top shit in the NBA if it weren’t for all those rules and regulations. Then you have the actual guys in the NBA that put a little control on what they do and say when under the public eye and, because of it, they make a living doing what they love.
I’ll add to it and say that the color commentary for both of these is quite different, and rightfully so. We’re at an age where sponsorship IS happening for some of our top players. Where the companies responsible for these games ARE putting coin in the winners pocket, whoever they may be. Where 10,000 viewers tune in on any given weekend to see their favorite players play their favorite games and listen to their favorite commentators (alright, some just tune in to say random shit, but hey). Where Alex Fucking Valle shows up and makes sure the genre HE plays is still alive and represented.
Is it seriously THAT much to ask to show a small amount of restraint when you involve yourself in promoting and covering a Major? To think to yourself, “Huh. Maybe I shouldn’t use the phrase ‘rape that fucking pussy’ on stream when my face and voice is right next to the logos for Capcom, MadCatz, Atlus, Hori, and Namco.” Or, “You know, might be a mildly good idea to not be in front of the camera when I start betting on players.”
Is it?
Edit - And before someone uses the “it’s live, there’s hype, people do things in the heat of the moment, etc.” defense, realize that this isn’t mob mentality…it’s just you on camera. Your defense equates to “Man, she was just so hot and I kept thinking about how hot she was, I just got carried away and didn’t stop staring at her tits while she was right in front of me.” Sorry, your hype levels don’t excuse being extra effing creepy.
