thanks man, i’ll do that
The PS3 does have a video scaler, it just downscales 720p to 480p instead of upscaling when you deselect 720p in the display settings.
I’m not sure this causes any lag though. The scaling is done by the PS3, and I believe it is highly efficient in this aspect. If it wasn’t then we would be seeing input delay when playing in 480i/p on CRT’s, and we know that isn’t the case.
I don’t believe the PS3 video settings by themselves can create lag, it all has to do with outputting a resolution that your television is most compatible with.
In the case of the ps3 and tv’s with a native resolution of 1920x1080, 720p video is going to be scaled no matter what you do, so it is better to output 720p video to the display rather than 1920x1080 which will still be downscaled to 720x480p
I have a 240hz led tv, and for the first few weeks I could not beat anyone in SF , than I switched it to game mode and surprise I was back to normal , I play all my games in that mode , and watch movies in 240hz , like mentioned barley anything you use the tv for will be able to take advantage of the tv full potential besides blu-ray movies,. I almost wished I waited before dropping 4g on my tv a couple months ago, I could have bought a 3-d tv now. Owell I love my tv
If your Samsung has a PC MODE input, use that if you can.
The PC mode disables pretty much all image processing, and you really don’t want any of that image processing nonsense for a fighting game.
- You’re correct. I should have been more specific. The PS3 cannot automatically upscale (720p>1080i/p) like the Xbox360 can.
- As mentioned before, you CANNOT change the refresh rate on your TV. If you have a 240Hz TV, it will always display at 240Hz. When you turn the TV to Game Mode, it simply disables all video processing, including de-judder processing (which is what you are talking about).
Really interesting information in this thread, thanks for that!
So I’m thinking about getting a new TV which will mostly be used for games and is plasma the way to go if I don’t want any problems with input lag and such?
The Panasonic plasmas are all tested to be about as low as you get in terms of consumer TVs, between 3-17ms, as opposed to the 40-90ms that is common(even in game mode) on many LCDs(even good brands like samsung).
Plus they’re cheaper and better all around anyways.
(Can search around avsforum.com to see tests on a lot of models).
Great thanks for the info, really appreciate it!
I have been interested in a Panasonic G10 for a while and they seem pretty good from what the people at avsforums says.
Go for Plasma. I just got a Plasma Samsung and it is really good. 0.0001ms response time… game mode… amazing black levels… really really smooth. Like for example when my friends and I are playing COD4 MW2 on my parent’s Panasonic LCD it seems a little choppy… on the samsung it feels and looks so much smoother. Plasma is better.
And yeah, I like 60hz better. I don’t like the look of those 120hz and 240hz… it just seems unnatural or it looks like it’s being slightly fast forwarded. It’s weird.
I thought plasma for gaming was a big no no? Cause of the eventual ghosting? It’s been a while so maybe the tech has gotten better is that why?
I’ve discovered that there are already monitors out there that display true 120hz but it is only for PCs and PC games. You also need a certain monitor with a video card that accepts Dual DVI, that’s the only way. You’d probably need to disable VSync in the game you were trying to use it with also.
All TVs are fake 120hz but there are real 120hz monitors, most of them are monitors that have a 3D mode, but when not in 3D have the bandwidth and processsing power to output true 120hz. You can find a list of them on Nvidia’s site on 3D monitors that work with Nvidia cards. Remember that it’s not all 3D monitors, only some.
plasma’s beat the hell out of LCDs, but I don’t know a single plasma with a true 120hz/240hz/whatever move. They’re all the fake upsampling method, they do not accept a real 120hz source.
now you’re talking! better than a CRT? truly? now that is a huge claim.
Quoted for truth, it’s the best way to deal with things on an LCD/Plasma/LCD wtih LED
Are you thinking of burn in problem? burn in isn’t much of an issue anymore unless you have the set on 24/7 with the same logo on one part of the screen the entire time.
As far as ghosting… I’m not an expert on the matter but I don’t think plasma is any worse than LCD on this but I could be wrong.
I’m so glad I found this thread. I just bought a Samsung 120hz LED the other day and as “cool” as the auto motion plus looks the first time you see it, its really not a benefit at all for games, it seems. I’ve noticed that all of a sudden on SSF4, my moves feel “latent”, in that I have trouble pulling off even a basic jump kick, much less things like air tatsu’s. Stopping opponents jumping in with a Shoryuken seems really lagged, too. I’m going to do some testing later and see if I can feel a real difference in the input response. If it still feels laggy with it disabled, its going back to best buy. LOL
Ok, turned off the “Auto Motion Plus” feature, and there definitely seems to be a difference. SSF4 seems far more responsive, specifically in the area of reacting to my opponent’s attacks, etc. The TV’s not going back, but that AMP option is gone for good. lol
